greenail··on Scam: YouTube live stream scam running
Appears to be another cryptocoin giveaway scam this time "with" Elon Musk And Cathie Wood. How do you get something like this shutdown?
greenail··on Ask HN: Are there techniques to cope with acute anxiety?
don't participate actively in social media, try to avoid reading social media, avoid the news, and do something (hopefully productive) to occupy your idle thoughts.
greenail··on What Is Computational Photography?
Seems like you could have a light room type software to do this in post if you had the data. Some modern mirrorless cameras can capture quite a lot of frames shutterless. You'd just need a new raw format to simplify the process and capture the buffer for the post later. Maybe it wouldn't work though since it isn't really clear what magic happens in the traditional digital camera's asic. Also, a vendor like sony would know both aspects of this coin (making phones, sensors, and cameras) and likely already be doing some magic with that knowledge.

greenail··on Ask HN: What Is a 'Misinformation Reporter'
But aren't all journalists supposed to be fact checkers? The idea seems redundant unless it is some admission that journalism has fundamentally changed.
greenail··on Yo, What's the Cloud?
"the cloud" started as an abstract way to whiteboard the internet as a puffy cloud. I started drawing internet clouds in around 1997. It is way easier than trying to draw the actual internet.
greenail··on Ask HN: Why aren't devs making desktop apps any more?
better question may be: why aren't consumers buying desktop apps as much anymore?
greenail··on Our fundamental right to shame and shun the New York Times
The irony for me here is that while I'd like to comment on this topic my HN account has been throttled because I've commented on these types of threads in the past.
greenail··on Vannevar Bush: A Public Sector Entrepreneur
"it wasn't all magic" an NSA history by Colin Burke has some very interesting stories about Vannevar.
greenail··on The Matrix Awakens: Unreal Engine 5 Techdemo [video]
i think many will pick the blue pill and waste much time in the matrix.
greenail··on Worldometer – real time world statistics
While I think the idea of visualizations of global scale number is good this seems to bring with it a political agenda. It would be improved if I could see multiple viewpoints and those agendas were made fully transparent.

I also think some ratios/comparisons could be interesting. The rate of births to deaths would be interesting to see with the numbers ticking along. While I can see the population ticking up I never realized there were 67k more people born every day than die.

greenail··on Tech journalism is less diverse than tech (2020)
I'll admit this is a pessimistic take but it seems to be something that is happening throughout our society.

The goal of something like this is to center race to gain power.

The first step in the playbook for entrenching a woke ideology into a bureaucracy is to demand racial data/reporting. "hey look, this is an obvious problem... just look at the data". The next step is to demand a full diversity initiative. Next is hiring diversity inclusion and equity bureaucrats be installed. Once you have your own bureaucrats installed "inclusion" is used to promote fear and stifle speech or any descent. Now that no one can disagree or challenge the bureaucracy you can grow it and force it into the other bureaucratic functions.

As an journalism specific example: this is exactly what played out at The New York Times

This seems to be a very effective political strategy to gain power. It does seem to work. The question is how much does our society benefit?

greenail··on Why Amazon Stock Popped on Thursday
Starbucks is looking at "just walk out" from Amazon. This is pretty big if they can figure out how to work with other retailers. In 2016 my first experience using the Seattle GO store was golden. I think it is the best way to shop hands down. The problem is that most retailers don't want to work with Amazon.

greenail··on Chess Grandmaster Kasparov on Mob Mentality and Groupthink
I wish there was more education about what happened after 1917 in Russia. I've read the gulag archipelago and while that is an amazing work not many will endeavor to read it. My education on the topic in school did not do a good job describing how the culture was manipulated or how fear was used to divide the population. There are important lessons learned that should never be forgotten.
greenail··on Firefox Relay
you can make unique addresses so they can be transparently replied to in any mail reader (including gmail/web). It takes a bit of work but is worth it. I've been using the system I built to do it for over 5 years.
greenail··on Learn RegEx step by step, from zero to advanced
I found logstash's Grok a good tool because it is composable and you can reuse complex expressions with simpler naming. There is also a knowledge base of good regex you can use without reinventing the wheel. Rubular.com is also a great tool for working out regex matches.
greenail··on The good things in the current age in tech
I'm saying people are building sputterers, waterjets and even fabing transistors and ICs(Sam Zeloof) in their garages. It goes way beyond factoids. You can connect with experts in just about any field.
greenail··on The good things in the current age in tech
My 8 year old son has a Nintendo switch. I recently showed him a video of the 80' "Mattel Electronic Football Handheld Game" which is essentially just a handful of dim LED's and some control buttons. I used to fight my brother to get time playing on that old thing. My son may never truly appreciate how far we've come with respect to technology.

The other thing I'd like to point out is that you either could afford some encyclopedias or went to the library. The fact that you can learn just about anything today is truly amazing. Folks like Ben Krasnow share amazing DIY things regularly that it would be hard to imagine in the 80's or 90's.

greenail··on Ask HN: How to be around people smarter than myself while working remotely
It is a very good question but it may help if you describe what you currently do and what you want to learn?

More generally ask for travel budget and try to travel as often as you can. Plan ahead at least a few weeks. Setup meetings in advanced with well thought out agenda/expectations. Setup social stuff like dinner or beers. Ask others if they have any interesting meetings you can sit in on. If you don't have any budget start working on justifying it with your leadership.

greenail··on We need to talk about the real reason behind US inflation
Driving up inflation (which likely triggers a recession) doesn't seem in the best interest of the companies listed. It certainly could be short sighted greed driving things, it wouldn't be the first time. But maybe the US government spending 3T in the last 2 years had more of an impact on the current inflation?
greenail··on Cloudflare and Oracle Join Forces to Help Eliminate Data Transfer Fees
"The Bandwidth Alliance is a group of forward-thinking cloud and networking companies that are committed to discounting or waiving data transfer (also known as bandwidth) fees for shared customers."

Is this essentially just agreeing to no paid private peering?

greenail··on Drunken-Driving Warning Systems Would Be Required for New Cars Under U.S. Bill
Cycling while drunk is a DUI [1] so would you be willing to make all new bicycles have the same requirements?

greenail··on Advice for Personal Digital Security
I create unique identities for each online account to pair with password management. I should really go further and rotate them. It seems that there is a relationship between the # of times an email identity has been reused and the quantity of breaches that show up on haveibeenpwned. My system allows for transparent replies via gmail/outlook etc and I can redirect where the emails land easily.

I just started playing with the system again and I wanted to add a few features.

1. vanity domains and shorter ids. I wonder what if i can get away with 8 char ids... example s0gt7i9n3uhd@green.foo.com I'll route the email based on "green" and "s0gt7i9n3uhd" in a way return emails can be reverse routed transparently.

2. bitwarden client integration. I think CLI client is the way to go, tips on a bitwarden gui library I could integrate with would be appreciated.

3. cloud object backend. For some accounts storing all the email on S3 or other object store would be fine. I'd like to get away from using gmail. I plan to have a ringbuffer to store recent emails per identity and then fetch/render them in my webapp.

4. I want to write some more advanced reporting. I track every address that sends to an identity and can for example trigger when the sender domain doesn't match the identity domain. This has indicated breaches. Once I know there is a breach I can easily blackhole the identity.

greenail··on Liberal Hypocrisy Is Fueling American Inequality. Here’s How. – NYT Opinion
This seems targeted at many on HN. I wonder if there is agreement with the critique?
greenail··on October had the biggest U.S. inflation surge in more than 30 years
I wonder what happens to the housing market. In the early 80's people literally swapped mortgages because getting a new mortgage came with rates >15%. Even if rates go back up to only 7.5% what happens to housing prices? It also seems like there may be a massive bubble of hedging in leveraged real estate by big institutional investors. Something like 25% of all purchases are by investors right now. What happens when regular people (who need a loan) can't afford the higher interest rates?
greenail··on GE to split into three separate companies
One of the problems I observed working with GE was they had pockets of a few smart folks who knew what they were doing and armies of people managing outsourcing without really having retained the industry specialization knowledge. It seemed like they barely knew their own business at times, they didn't understand the technology and they were highly specialized in dealing with external vendors. This would lay blame on execs like Gary Reiner who pushed outsourcing everywhere. They did try to turn that around and it is probably worthy of a book to review what they tried to bounce back from over-outsourcing, what worked, and what didn't.
greenail··on Attraction Inequality and the Dating Economy (2019)
This is a very interesting topic and it is worthy of discussion.

One thing to point out is that women tend not to couple down-status. Combined with the fact that more women are getting degrees than men further reduces the pool of available males. It isn't clear what impact this will have long term.

> The institution of monogamy is itself a “redistributive” type of policy: like capping the income of billionaires, it caps the total allowed romantic partners of the most attractive, so that unattractive people have much better chances to find a partner.

This seems like an odd take. Monogamy is not dating equity for ugly people, it is a social construct evolved to give children an advantage over the long run. One of the biggest barriers you could have to over come is to come from a single parent home. There is copious data on this topic.
