Obviously Macron is right, because violence and destruction have never occurred in human history until video games were created.

I really, really wish I wasn't so terrible at using a console controller for FPS games. I would love to play COD and all the others on PS or Xbox, but I'm awful. It would be so much better.

AliExpress hardware - that seems like an adventure. Curious, how has your overall experience been with the hardware you bought?
green-eclipse··on Meta plans thousands more layoffs as soon as this week
Wall Street rewarded Meta with a massive jump in share price (+15% in one day) when Zuck stated on an earnings call that he was all now about efficiency (and therefore a tacit admission that he won't just throw the entire company off the VR cliff into the abyss).

Zuck probably thinks more of the same will buy additional good will from Wall St.

I love this! I'll be waiting at doctors offices a lot over the next few days and will be grinding hard on this. Thanks for sharing it.

Playing on desktop vs mobile is interesting -- I noticed the board isn't just rotated 90 degrees, but rotated and mirrored. Just curious why you decided to do that? A quirk in the rendering or something? Thanks again.

green-eclipse··on Amazon reports its first unprofitable year since 2014
No one is claiming the end is near for Amazon. That's a strawman. But it's clear from the earnings release that the business is experiencing strong headwinds in multiple areas of the empire. Amazon closed out its slowest year of growth in its quarter century as a public company.

And Amazon does care about the stock price. If they didn't, they wouldn't issue guidance to Wall St analysts every quarter about expected revs and earnings. Not all big tech companies issue guidance. Apple stopped doing it several years ago. Google has never issued guidance. Maybe Amazon didn't care about the stock price a decade ago, but that's definitely not the case now.

Incredibly difficult to defend against nation state attackers and such. North Korea is very persistent in crypto hacks, for example:

green-eclipse··on DOJ asks for independent probe into FTX to gather evidence of alleged fraud
Yeah I think there was massive fraud. It will be found out, but the legal system moves slowly. My hope is that all the key people involved will be available for extradition from whatever far-flung place they are likely to flee to soon.
green-eclipse··on Tell HN: If you have trouble focusing on projects/meetings, see a psychatrist
Wife told me I was snoring. But then my dad was diagnosed with apnea, and I decided to get a test. So glad I did.
green-eclipse··on Tell HN: If you have trouble focusing on projects/meetings, see a psychatrist
Not ADHD, but some similar symptoms for me. I could not focus on anything at work. Massive procrastination. It was just brutally painful to try to finish things I was working on.

Long story short: the culprit was sleep apnea. After a sleep test, I got a CPAP machine. After a bit of time to adjust to the equipment, it made a profound change to my life.

The next year or so was perhaps the most productive of my life. My boss & coworkers remarked it was like I was a different person.

Good quality sleep is important, it turns out!

(Side note: I dropped into REM sleep before my CPAP machine, with lively dreams and stuff. So I didn't really think I had apnea. My faulty mindset of apnea was that you basically couldn't dream at all. But once I had the CPAP machine, my dreams turned into unreal, epic sagas, as my brain started to repair and catch up on all the REM sleep it had missed over the years. My dreams are no longer so crazy, but that first 3-4 months was really interesting)

green-eclipse··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
Amazon's hallmark in the past has been investing big into businesses without immediate profits. Amazon gets massive revenue but has nowhere near the margins of an Apple, or Google. As you know, a net loss and revenue are not apples to apples. For full year 2018, Amazon had net income of $10B on $232B of revenue.

All of which is to say that a $5B loss is a very material number. They obviously thought it would be a big profit driver in the future, which it has not turned out to be yet.

green-eclipse··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
Agreed. I'm just illustrating that it's part of an ongoing pattern at Amazon. Not some new, shocking thing. I'd expect more in the future.
green-eclipse··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
> In 2018, Echo and Alexa lost about $5 billion, said a person with knowledge of the finances. When Amazon introduced new devices this fall in an annual event, it was notably more restrained than past years when it had featured zany products like a sticky note printer and $1,000 home robot.

$5B loss from one business line is a lot. Maybe this manner of investment inspired Zuck on the metaverse.

green-eclipse··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
This is just the latest round of cuts at Amazon: "From April through September, it reduced head count by almost 80,000 people, primarily shrinking its hourly staff through high attrition."

Also: "Amazon froze hiring in several smaller teams in September. In October, it stopped filling more than 10,000 open roles in its core retail business. Two weeks ago, it froze corporate hiring across the company, including its cloud computing division, for the next few months."

This is amazing! Incredible work! Thank you for doing this project.

FYI I found a typo - the word "cuts":

> It's 750 by 750 feet at the base and is made of over 2 million large, limestone blocks cuts from the surrounding area.

Also - from one of the angles shown, it looks like there's a golf course next to the pyramids? Not at all what I expected!
