greatsuccess··on Immutability, MVCC, and garbage collection
You are correct, thats easy to reason about unless you are writing the garbage collector, in which case its pointless to write a garbage collector because there will never be anything to collect and memory will expand infinitely.

As for the persistent data structure comments, that has nothing to do with the fact that every function in a functional program has to copy data at such a ridiculously fined grained level that all you are doing is writing a garbage creator.

This data that every function creates in the name of immutability is meaningless, void of any purpose and is a bug.

greatsuccess··on Immutability, MVCC, and garbage collection
Id like to keep immutability and databases separate in this comment. Immutability the supposed "big advantage" of functional languages, is a discussion which is one-way.

No one ever discusses the implications of a system which is constantly, needlessly, insanely doing nothing but MAKING COPIES OF DATA.

This is not how systems are/should be designed and Im sure as hell not going to use a functional language until functional understands basic common sense. A system that is constantly copying data for no reason will do nothing else.

greatsuccess··on A glimpse into a new programming language under development at Microsoft
C++ does not perform, is not a managed language, and has nothing to offer. What could he possibly be talking about?

I read this as MS once again getting it completely wrong. Seriously C++ solving managed languages performance and memory problems?

Physician, HEAL THY SELF.

greatsuccess··on Steve Jobs Danced To My Song.He did. He really did.
As an addendum to my comment this event set a bad precedent. As the excuse to fire Scott Forstall was to come out with a similar (non) apology.

Which is really ironic, because had Jobs not chosen to make this ridiculous NON apology for the iPhone 4 antenna, Tim Cook would not have requested that Forstall do the same for Apple Maps, which is by all indication way better than android maps at this point. (YMMV)

And I switched to Android because iOS7 is a disaster because Forstall is gone and its now a horror show. You be the judge.

greatsuccess··on Steve Jobs Danced To My Song.He did. He really did.
Im sorry to say, although I admire the song writer for his irrational exuberance, this is not the case.

The day he is referencing was one of the angriest days of Jobs late tenure at Apple.

Jobs was furious, indignant, and as angry as he could be that a flaw was found in his precious iPhone.

Jobs was baring his teeth during the entire event while countering with "we LOVE our customers". It was a really sad and poorly thought out affair.

Job was not dancing to this guys song. He was trying to pretend to contain his absolute rage. I was there. Watch the video. Jobs was incensed not happy and that video was a prop.

And I lived just a few miles from cupertino at the time, and believe me every call I made was dropped due to that spot on the antenna.

greatsuccess··on Dyeing the cheese orange – Beware of benchmarks
I have never known Paypal to be a company that improves their software. This may be the first rewrite since the 90s for all I know. Yes they have a business, but as a consumer and merchant on Paypal the overriding feeling I have always gotten is that they are on cruise control as far as engineering.

So when they say they changed to node and things got better, I just take it as, OMG, paypal tried to improved something and it improved.

Im sure it has nothing to do with node.

greatsuccess··on Guide to Leaving your Mac
I don't need a guide to leaving the best computer currently made. If I had to use a PC I don't know if I would bother with computers at all except for my job. PC laptops have the reputation they deserve and I think they not only tarnished personal/mobile computing as a general concept (only to be rescued by Apple), PC laptops should be the first category of the PC family to die out completely and save people the misery and disillusionment that when you buy such a thing, that you think you actually bought something.

And Im not even saying Windows laptops, this is a commodity hardware issue combined with fantastically disappointing software (Windows or Ubuntu), but I wouldn't want one running OS X either.

It's time for the PC industry to take out its own trash.

greatsuccess··on Google Has Officially Penalized Rap Genius For Link Schemes
How is what Rap Genius any different than selling ad space, Googles core business? It seems to be that this was just an interpersonal request for an AD to link back to Rap Genius.

What is wrong with that anyway? Adwords and Adsense are just an affiliate program anyway.

I dont see much of a problem with it.
