greatquux··on The Zizians and the rationalist death cult
Holy crap, you can sleep only one side of your brain?! How would anyone think of even doing this?
greatquux··on Valve announces Frog Protocols to bypass slow Wayland development
read that mastodon post. the community already isn't healthy. forking it and making it into a healthier community may be the way to go. after all, it's been done before (egcs).
greatquux··on Committing to Rust in the Kernel
Jonathan is eminently reasonable. He just wants everyone to get along. He’s no more an evangelist for Rust than Linus is, who, you'll recall, is trying to make it work also.
greatquux··on NetWare NFS Gateway 1.1
I wonder why? I read it at the time since I subscribe to their RSS feed. Maybe because he actually linked to the "warez dump" that everyone is talking about but no one had actually linked to until then? I checked it out, I just wish I had the time to go through it all! :)
greatquux··on Knocking out one key gene leads to autistic traits
Exactly. I also have a 6-year old child with severe autism. He's a really happy and playful child, he actually makes good eye contact, especially when having fun, enjoys hiking and swimming, and loves affection. But he simply cannot communicate effectively, either with words (which is a mixture of jargon and echolalia, though he's definitely starting to read words!) or an AAC device. He has great balance and likes climbing and playing on playgrounds, but he can't tie his shoes or use a pencil/pen or a lot of other fine-motor skills. If there were a "cure", we'd take it - it would absolutely make his life better! But that's highly unlikely, so we are getting him as much therapy as we can, and hope that he can have enough independence after we're gone to continue to have a happy life.
greatquux··on Interview with Esolang Academic [video]
i love this guy
greatquux··on The War on Weeds
I view my lawn the same way as the author, in that I do want there to be a good amount of biodiversity there. I let everything grow in the yard sections and even have parts that I leave almost totally wild without even cutting. But I also don't want weeds growing in the cracks between my paving stones, or poison ivy growing anywhere, and there's not a whole lot that works on knotweed! So I don't use a ton of Roundup but I do use a bit here and there. In moderation is again key but doesn't seem to fit into anyone's ideological framework these days.
greatquux··on Is the frequency domain a real place?
Sometimes the title itself generates a kind of excitement in your brain and you start answering it before you even read the blog post. And in this case as others have noticed, it's not exactly answered in the way some of us would.

I do know I've thought about this, and even had one of those "moments of realization" on the drive home from my first lecture on DCTs, where I thought I could transform all of human history from time domain to frequency domain and how this would bring out certain patterns and truths that could not be understood otherwise. I swear I wasn't on drugs! (Though the lecture was in fact given by Prof. Marshall of Rutgers, the father of the lyricist for the rock band Phish, at whose concerts I have imbibed certain substances... but I digress.) The frequency domain is just as "real" as any other mathematical construction that can help us understand everything.

greatquux··on Meta outage
This will be great for productivity!
greatquux··on The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6
That's why I'm happy the KDE developers and others have acknowledged this is actually a problem and are creating solutions for it, unlike many GNOME developers who say "it's your fault it crashed!"
greatquux··on Goodhart's Law
Came here to post this. It's insane how he manages to condense these concepts so succinctly, and this only took one panel!
greatquux··on Let's Ban SMS 2FA
Let’s not.
greatquux··on Investigating Rock Radio with Rick Beato
Rock looked pretty good at the 4 Phish shows last week at MSG!
greatquux··on Beeper Mini is back
What I mean is I'm not constantly fighting to keep messages under a certain size, getting message rejections, weird formatting, or even annoying tapback quotes anymore: basic functionality is all I care about and working fine. Plus I can send funny GIFs back and forth! I have used Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, etc and they're "nice" and have lots of emotes, but I don't really care too much as long as basic functionality is good.
greatquux··on Beeper Mini is back
100%. It's nice to have the typing status, delivered/read status, higher quality of pictures, etc. But I could care less what color it is, and group conversations with SMS/MMS work pretty darn well. I would like a desktop SMS/MMS/iMessage client for my Linux desktop though without having to run a Mac.
greatquux··on How the first gen iPod was reverse engineered to run Rockbox
rockbox + sansa clip at the gym + live jamband shows were the best. rockbox made it easy to just throw stuff on and play from a folder, no worrying about a "database" or how the mp3 tags would be interpreted or sorted, just put them in alpha order and you're good. and it did gapless mp3 with ease, it was so awesome!
greatquux··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Seriously I don't have the chops or time to do it, but creating a Pidgin wrapper around this tech would be awesome. Just for basic texts/emoticons, it helps a lot with Teams and WhatsApp chats already for me (along with the Pidgin notification extension for GNOME that pops up a box I can type a quick reply into wherever I am).
greatquux··on Struggles with the Continuum
Couldn't agree more, though when I see this brought up, I've always seen "people who seem to know more than me" saying that it just leads to other problems, and they kind of hand-wave it away... but I still think there should be some more serious exploration of this. How could "real" numbers _truly_ exist, any more than "imaginary" ones?
greatquux··on Owners Keep Zombie Malls Alive Even When Towns Want to Pull the Plug
this just keeps going into a captcha loop for me, tried multiple browsers; anyone else?
greatquux··on Teach a man to phish and he’s set for life
It's true: Ever since I became a Phish fan back in '96 I've been set for life! :)
greatquux··on KDE is ready to deprecate IRC, XMPP, and Telegram in favor of Matrix
This comment made me go down a serious Matrix + bridges rabbithole. Seriously considering getting a cheap VPS and doing it. But would you recommend using matterbridge for all the protocols or using some of the individual protocol bridge projects I've seen out there? I only really need XMPP, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
greatquux··on Wine 8.0
I use it to run: Notepad++ (I just haven't found anything I like better than it) - runs great and developer knows people use Wine to run it and makes sure it works Kaseya Live Connect / Remote Control (Kaseya RMM system) - the thing is basically a big QtWeb app, and runs surprisingly well TagScanner (an MP3 tag editing app, also works very well)

Sometimes I think maybe I can run Office 365 on it, but I generally decide it's not worth screwing around with. I can totally get by fine with Evolution + EWS to connect to my Exchange server, and LibreOffice for editing documents.

greatquux··on Haiku R1/beta4
Spot on man. I think we've all learned that the best tech stack will not win without also having a good sales, marketing, and management team to support it. And if you are completely incompetent at those things it doesn't matter how good your tech is, you will turn into a hilarious failure we'll all be laughing at later. (Though we'll have a lot of fun making YouTube videos where we run all your shit through emulation.) I know people always shat on Microsoft's engineering, though the truth is I think they tried to do the best they could with what they had and they also understood how important backwards compatibility was, and they had to work within that limitation. But I think that maybe they were just a bit jealous that their management was so far ahead of everyone else (really only Apple after Jobs came back could rival them)!
greatquux··on AM Stereo
I think this is the webpage of one of my favorite YouTubers VWestlife: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1ydE9gDHTdvbNVIgEKIKzw He makes all sorts of cool retro videos on computers, hi-fi systems, records, tapes, etc. And he's been doing it for a really long time too! Like, recording early stuff on camcorders and digitizing and uploading.
greatquux··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
No, but we're not talking about that. We're talking only about if these particular videos cross some kind of imaginary line which is different for everyone and constantly shifts in our minds based on the last comment we read on HN.
greatquux··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
Exactly - we all don't have to be doing that all the time. And MrBeast does not choose random people or even poor people for these challenges, he chooses only his own subscribers - people who are already interested in this content and presumably watch it regularly and are delighted to be in one of the videos.
greatquux··on An X11 apologist tries Wayland
Same here. I need to restart gnome shell everytime I update an extension for some stupid reason, but it's easy and I don't lose any work. This is a sucky design decision that is just a showstopper for me. I wish it the best I guess...
greatquux··on Analysis of a large brute force attack campaign against Windows Remote Desktop
We use Rublon for adding MFA to Remote Desktop and other VPNs too and it works very well. It’s not an over engineered monstrosity like Microsoft solutions.
greatquux··on Analysis of a large brute force attack campaign against Windows Remote Desktop
I think though it may be better without 2FA to block attacking IPs no matter what the protocol.
greatquux··on Analysis of a large brute force attack campaign against Windows Remote Desktop
Yep confirmed works great on 2016 and 2019.
