greatpatton··on N26 will be leaving the UK
Really N26 is the leading virtual bank in Europe. So I hope that by that same standard we stop to hear about PayPal, square or any other US/rest of the world fintech companies....
greatpatton··on N26 will be leaving the UK
No, it has to do with the fact that when you have a smaller customer base and additional cost when running on razor-sharp margin, it doesn't make the cut. So yes it has to do with the Brexit as this is the reason for future additional cost, especially today when EU negotiator said that it will be very unlikely for the UK to get financial services equivalence. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/feb/11/barnier-tel...
greatpatton··on China Sacrifices a Province to Save the World From Coronavirus
I think that this article (https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/feb/06/h...) illustrate that it is very likely that the symptoms in most people are mild and these people are not seeking medical advice while spreading it around them.

If this is really the case, it is going to be very difficult to contain it.

greatpatton··on US Department of Justice Argues Assange Has No First Amendment Rights
yes that's exactly what I'm saying... (puzzled)
greatpatton··on US Department of Justice Argues Assange Has No First Amendment Rights
I think that you don't fully understand the concept underlying diplomatic immunity. Diplomatic immunity exists to ensure that countries cannot use the local legal system when no crime is committed in order to put pressure on the diplomat or his family, not to go away when a real crime is committed. A lot of countries will wave diplomatic immunity when a real crime is committed or will prosecute the diplomat in their local legal system. The only countries refusing to do so are rogue or third world countries.
greatpatton··on NOAA Satellites Helped Save a Record 421 Lives in 2019
In France mountain rescue is provided free of charge by the french state (only exception is when you are skiing on an official ski run). In Switzerland it’s not free, and almost all the population is a member of the 2 main associations that will cover the costs.
greatpatton··on Immune discovery 'may treat all cancer'
I think that your post is a little bit too cynical. It is not like CD47 has disappeared, and many clinical trials are ongoing currently (15 trials currently recruiting), some with quite positive result (36% of complete response in heavily pretreated patients phase I study) (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1807315). Other immunotherapies have saved many people something that you cannot dismiss. On the other ends translation from research to an available treatment is a very long path, but we should be excited every time a treatment save a person that should have otherwise died.
greatpatton··on Machine keeps human livers alive for one week outside of the body
I'm wondering how do they control pathogens, as from my understanding the perfusate is lacking white blood cell. This is not described in the Nature article.

However this kind of technologies open really a lot of new possibilities regarding organ transplantation, and even auto transplantation as describe at the end of the article.

greatpatton··on France's AMF watchdog fines Bloomberg €5M over Vinci hoax
Exactly pay-at-pump is just not working with European cards most of the time (not always true as I was able to find one working in Phoenix). Paying inside is fine, but a hassle as you have to estimate the amount of gas you need for a rental car you barely know.

By the way, in Florida you don't even have to wonder about a credit card at the toll as it is Sunpass/pay by plate or cash only...

A little bit like US Gas station I suppose?
greatpatton··on Today is Esperanto Book Day – why I learned it (2018)
No English is not at all a fully neutral playing ground. It's in many countries a strong differentiator between rich/elite class and poor people. It's already the case in a big part of Europe and even more present in the rest of the world. For most Europeans, Esperanto can be learned quickly as grammar is very simple and vocabulary share a large root with European languages. On the other end, English is a big mess of exceptions (grammar and pronunciation). This requires extensive training to reach a basic level.
greatpatton··on SpaceX working on fix for Starlink satellites so they don’t disrupt astronomy
And so what? founding a company is the easiest step (a little bit of money and paperwork). executing to make it the world leader in electric mobility is what really matters. So your point is really irrelevant.
greatpatton··on AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Review
Yet the main question remain if the benchmark were done with the latest mitigation (and version of the microcode) or without...
greatpatton··on German solar and wind are triple the cost of French nuclear, last half as long
Strange that the article is not talking about the latest french reactor Flamanville 3. This EPR reactor is already 10 years late and will cost more than 13b€ For 160MW. And this just for construction cost and not for running/dismantling it.

Then I wonder what practical exemple would support that after 15 years a solar PV installation has to be rebuilt.

greatpatton··on Does Automating the Metro Save Money? (2017)
The economics goes behind the limited analysis of this article. The main problem with train and metro drivers is that they need to be hired and trained to a certain level, and you also need other position like traffic regulator, etc. Here in Switzerland there is a lack of train driver creating problems as some services cannot be maintained to the expected level. In my city a suburban train line had to go from one train every 15min back to one every 30min, because of a lack of trained resources regarding traffic regulation (seems that 2 peoples were sick and another one quit), and cannot be as easily replaced.
greatpatton··on Does Automating the Metro Save Money? (2017)
No during the last strike (September) in Paris the line 1 and 14 (the only 2 lines with automated metro) were both operational.
greatpatton··on Intel publishes misleading benchmarks against AMD
oh really one thread per core is the optimum for EPYC server? I don't know why AMD care about hyper threading then.
greatpatton··on AMD is having its day
Be more specific, because the basic stuff needed by 99% of setup has been covered for ages. We are managing hundreds of machine with just SP IPMI.
greatpatton··on Spanish government orders GitHub to take down Tsunami Democràtic repository
I think that regarding the Catalan independence the Spanish judiciary system had proven itself to be at the level of the worst dictatorial country. People taking part in it should be shameful. When most of these cases will go up to the EU court they will likely get squashed.
greatpatton··on New ventures should focus all their efforts on problem-solving
"the pedestrian in fact had every reason to feel very visible." Why because the pedestrian was high? Otherwise the NTSB report state:

"the pedestrian was dressed in dark clothing, did not look in the direction of the vehicle until just before impact, and crossed the road in a section not directly illuminated by lighting. The pedestrian was pushing a bicycle that did not have side reflectors and the front and rear reflectors, along with the forward headlamp, were perpendicular to the path of the oncoming vehicle. The pedestrian entered the roadway from a brick median, where signs facing toward the roadway warn pedestrians to use a crosswalk, which is located 360 feet north of the Mill Avenue crash site. The report also notes the pedestrian’s post-accident toxicology test results were positive for methamphetamine and marijuana."

I don't know how you derive that the pedestrian had every reason to feel visible.

greatpatton··on Intel: 10nm Product Era Has Begun, 7nm on Track
This 10mm Ice Lake CPU officially launched in June at Computex... Three months later they are nowhere to be seen, and nobody is showing a product including this CPU. So what is going on?
greatpatton··on Intel: 10nm Product Era Has Begun, 7nm on Track
I think that this article is really telling about the truth behind the Intel marketing: https://semiaccurate.com/2019/10/29/intels-actions-on-10nm-a...

Intel is telling every 3 months that 10mm is around the corner since 2016... (and even had a token 10mm CPU). Here we are in 2019, and we are still waiting.

greatpatton··on U.S. widens trade blacklist to include some of China’s top AI startups
of course ML is a wide field but for instance these paper were quite relevant to our work:

* https://arxiv.org/pdf/1802.03903.pdf * https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8710885 but they are numerous, and the work done at Tsinghua University is very interesting

By the way down voting a comment based on facts is rather silly...

greatpatton··on U.S. widens trade blacklist to include some of China’s top AI startups
I don't know but from a science point of view all our last research are based on paper coming from people at China companies (Alibaba, Tencent), that currently have the edge in our specific domain (machine learning). So yes in domains that mainly require your brain they have caught up if not ahead.
