greatgirl··on Amazon Co-founder Mackenzie quietly gave over $4B to 384 organizations in 2020
I recommend the title of this be changed to "Mackenzie Scott gave over $4B to 384 organizations in 2020"
greatgirl··on Twitter Confirms It Halted 'Hang Mike Pence' as a Trending Topic
This was my thought exactly. It's a technique that i see people like Sam Altman and other tech gurus use on twitter. Make no specific mention about who or what you're talking about, and your words can apply to everything and appeal to everyone.

I'll say my own personal quiet part out loud: Every thread on this topic has the highest upvoted chain of comments about how "Trump was bad, but i worry about the implications of banning politicians". This sole statement has been stretched to its logical limits. There's very little more to discuss about this that is interesting or new.

Very rational of you.

greatgirl··on Arrests of Hong Kong democrats shows why EU must reject China investment
Do we need that? These cold wars run at the expense of 3rd world countries who experience them as a hot war. Good for you that no one in your country dies, but people in mine will.
greatgirl··on Arrests of Hong Kong democrats shows why EU must reject China investment
I am not from the US or from China. I sincerely feel like your opinion is born of propaganda, but not only that, your call to action is itself propaganda.

You replied only to the parts i deleted, unfortunately. Neither of your responses even dispute my points.

Of course I demand rigor in a subfield that exists almost entirely to inform policies like segregation, eugenics, welfare, education, etc, and I find studies based on IQ tests and the g factor to be very much inadequate at being socially relevant.
greatgirl··on Haskell is a Bad Programming Language (2020)
I find the circle jerk around programming languages to be kind of tired. I realise this is a deeply ironic statement. But, personally, once i realised the vast amount of the rest of the world that is out there and can be explored, intellectually and physically, going back to arguing about programming languages made me feel a bit sick.

I think this can't be applied to other niche interests. There's something uniquely tireless, insignificant, and wanky about programming language discourse that makes it especially sickening to me.

There is no wikipedia page on heritability of intelligence, only heritability of IQ. It makes me consider whether the rest of what you've said is actually incorrect since you made such a conflation.

Intelligence is a notoriously hard thing to define and measure, and I think it's more easily predicted by environmental factors than genetics. The idea that smart people breed and have smart children and that's why some people are smart and others are dumb, is more of a cop-out, since predictors of success that tests like IQ try to explain are more accurately explained by socio-economic factors.

Basically this has no real world implications. I realise this isn't the argument you were trying to make necessarily, you were just pointing out a perceived 'fact', but it lacks a lot of nuance that could lead to dangerous assumptions about the real world, especially since you related it to sexuality.

Most of the damage from BLM was incited by police, who were 500x more aggressive towards black protestors than the terrorists at the capitol.

Not surprising, if other companies are doing it they now know its safe for their profits to do it too. They also know that hes leaving office soon so they dont have to worry about getting legislated into trouble.
greatgirl··on Will Alphabet’s Unionization Effort Spread to Other Big Tech Companies?
What don't you think is the case? I'm reading your sentence and it doesn't contradict anything I've said.
greatgirl··on Will Alphabet’s Unionization Effort Spread to Other Big Tech Companies?
People wrongly predicted the end of the tech industry (and by tech industry i mostly mean ad-tech like google, since that is the subject of the thread) because they don't understand it, and there was even more reason to misunderstand it when it was in its infancy.

Now, we can see the amount of anti-trust cases against them, the amount of regulation popping up, the overabundance of young compsci students. There are reasons to expect it to burst one day, but I never said that day was soon.

greatgirl··on Will Alphabet’s Unionization Effort Spread to Other Big Tech Companies?
They have about 300 employees on board. It probably wont get as high as 10 thousand, but it's not insignificant and this is, in my opinion, more of a preparatory organisation for the inevitable tech bubble burst, probably from some regulation.
greatgirl··on Will Alphabet’s Unionization Effort Spread to Other Big Tech Companies?
Not on a long term scale. Tech's revenue is eventually going to dry up, regulations will become tighter and the low hanging fruit will be picked. They'll be less willing to pay engineers a senator's salary and there will be more engineers to go around too. With this comes discomfort if you're a software engineer. Your job begins to become less thinking and more maintenance. Your salary isn't what it was, or you get outsourced, or you simply get fired because the company doesn't need more than one smart engineer. With this comes politicization. Why does one person get to decide my fate? Why isn't the workplace a democracy?

Then you will see unions in the tech industry.

greatgirl··on Will Alphabet’s Unionization Effort Spread to Other Big Tech Companies?
I will one day write a piece about how the tech industry accidentally invented the superior business model. Pay workers higher and they're less likely to unionise. They're more productive (lest they lose their jobs). They don't want to leave. This works for the tech industry because technically they're not paying workers higher to be generous, it's just a different way to invest the profits back into the business, like how a car company would invest into steel infrastructure. Software doesn't need to do that, their infrastructure is employee's brains.

As it turns out, the more ethical solution tends to work better for businesses, I think. If CEO's took a cut out of their salary and the profits and reinvested it into worker salaries I am willing to bet this would make any business more productive.

You might say software employees leave and unionise anyway, but they only leave to go to better companies and their unions aren't very popular. Time will tell on that second point though.

greatgirl··on Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo, but got laughed out of the room
It's not a misunderstanding its how companies work. If you make shareholders unhappy you simply risk them leaving. Thats why on average companies do things that make them happy. Oh, also the shareholders pick the board and the board does things for the company. You can see the relationship now?
greatgirl··on My stack is HTML+CSS
Sure, but all the problems come from the server side. You could suffer data corruption, power outage, domain name theft, whatever. I agree css and html is great but the author made this post specifically to feel superior about his theoretically perfect website, and i figure it's my job to inform him it's not theoretically perfect.

That's a satisfying bit of poetry, but it's not really how fascism works. I've studied both the ideology and history of this movement, and what causes or is a part of fascism is rising inequality, excessive privatisation, and extreme social shifts, to be very simple about it. Any time a socio-economic crisis happens it can go one of two ways: collectivism or fascism.

Trump is only 'allowed' to exist because he satisfies a particular urge of a quarter of the country. If you truly want to kill fascism you have to actually provide quality public education, financial relief, etc. to all these skinheads for generations to come. This is something republicans will never do, and something democrats only want to do in principle but have a hard time pulling the trigger.

Besides, it's not like those rioters were killed. All this showed them was that storming the capitol is incredibly easy. Fascism is nowhere near gone. In fact it seems to be rising worldwide, and for reasons I noted above.

Oh, another thing. With climate change underway we can expect to see millions of climate refugees. That is going to make fascism even worse, for obvious reasons. Trump ran on the principle of keeping out Mexicans. That was just one country. You're in for some serious trouble if you don't help the global south and the middle east.

greatgirl··on Rust 1.43
In that case I think keeping up very small additive changes is good, thanks for clearing up
greatgirl··on Rust 1.43
I would say there is an argument to be made on both sides. On one hand rust is only 10 years old with much less corporate backing than Go, but on the other hand you have to be very careful with even small changes if you want the language to be stable in the long run.

I can see why people are worried, and it's valid, but I also trust the devs are making correct choices

greatgirl··on Rust 1.43
Thank you. I wonder how long this will hold though? I would not like to see it get to a point where the language is fine but people aren't really sure what else to do and just make changes for the hell of it.

In other words I think there needs to be a long term standardisation plan to keep the language stable, but for now this is a good step.
