Mostly frontend engineer who comes from a background in science. I love good UX.

gravity13··on Amazon Dash Button
| The ultimate frictionless experience would be for coffee capsules to be delivered before running out of them

But it's not like people can't be this, without much mental overhead. If I know it takes two days to ship something, and I use it daily, and recognize I'll be out in three days - I'm gonna push that button.

It's frictionless because it integrates perfectly with the use of the product.

How long before automatic cat-feeders automatically purchase cat food for you?

gravity13··on Amazon Dash Button
Yes. This is truly great design thinking.

But wait, how do you handle nudists?

gravity13··on Amazon Dash Button
| but I can't help but scream "why??"

Because it's a tangible reminder that you need to buy new X and it removes all the barriers entirely to that. It's wildly convenient.

Might I remind you:

- Locate mobile device

- Swipe/Unlock mobile device

- Locate Safari App/Amazon app

- Tap and wait for Safari to load

- Access amazon.com

- Type in 'X'

- Locate results and click on option

- Press 'one click purchase' for irony

vs.

- Press a button.

gravity13··on Slack was hacked
And it's not hipchat (or bought by Atlassian). Let's not forget that.
gravity13··on Rent Control Creates Higher Rents in SF
And here I have no doubt that there's sufficient demand to account for the increase in supply.

There's probably not 120 people, and 100 houses. I think it's 500 people and 100 houses. Higher rent has driven a lot of people out who would have preferred to stay but couldn't because of the price.

Rent control is the only thing keeping some of them here.

gravity13··on Bitlean: Learn to code fast by competing against other developers
That makes sense from a pedagogical perspective. It's a lot like exercise though, if you're Arnold Schwarzenegger, you are not going to make sweet gains from writing a for loop.

You'll need to find people at your skill level to go against and this presents a barrier for a lot of us at step one.

gravity13··on Bitlean: Learn to code fast by competing against other developers
And perhaps the winner is decided after the fact by a vote, based on metrics of efficiency, elegance, etc...

I'd love to see a more natural, bite-sizable, exposure to other programming languages and/or paradigms in this way.

gravity13··on A Brief Overview of Deep Learning
I actually came in here to ask for clarification on this.

This sounds presumptuous. Couldn't there be thousands of neural networks which all receive an input signal, and we know how to interpret the output of all of these, as a signal. Maybe the neural networks themselves are all only 10 layers deep, but if they're all running in parallel - this defeats this point, right?

I don't really know anything about it, though.

gravity13··on Show HN: Bubbles – A minimalist visualization of what's new on Twitter
Hm. I hope this comes across as constructive criticism, but I'm not sure the visualization type matches well with the data you are presenting.

The movement of the bubbles doesn't seem to convey any useful information, it's just added flare. I'd get rid of it. (you might enjoy some classic books by Edward Tufte too)

The placement of the bubbles seems to be completely random. You can use your space more wisely.

You are trying to represent growing trends with this visualization, perhaps some sort of component should go into representing that. Maybe you can represent that in your x and y plane somehow?

You're viz looks blurry on retina screens. You can fix this by setting the width attribute of your canvas element to twice what you want it to be, and adding a css style width at what you want the width to actually be.

Edit: I just read the text describing what velocity actually does, nvm, I'm dumb.

gravity13··on What Students Do (And Don't Do) in Khan Academy
Can Khan Academy ever become something other than Khan Academy?

That's a profound question for me.

gravity13··on MIT indefinitely removes online physics lectures and courses by Walter Lewin
Steve Jobs touched my sister's boob.
gravity13··on MIT indefinitely removes online physics lectures and courses by Walter Lewin
This is true. I actually cite his physics lectures as part of the reason why I got into the online learning tech industry. Walter Lewin's been a bit of a hero to me.
gravity13··on Are You a Robot? Introducing “No CAPTCHA ReCAPTCHA”
I was confused about all of this until I read your comment. Makes perfect sense now!

Also makes me think that they can dump the whole charade and provide no security check at all, but that'd probably make the service-providers uncomfortable and they lose the user as a source of human-intelligence for classifying things on google image searches.

gravity13··on Reddit Gets into Crowdfunding with Redditmade
I just like imagining the discussion that happened at the conception of this idea. It probably starts something like this: "Guys, we need a way to monetize the reddit."
gravity13··on Ask HN: Where do you see web and desktop apps in 5 years?
Not just with the voice control - I can imagine something like Siri being able to respond to requests of things like, "Please show me all of my videos taken while I was in Hawaii of 2014."
gravity13··on Show HN: Milkshake – Real-time playlists with friends over websockets
Curious, why did you limit it to just two people?

I would just want to send a playlist of three items out asynchronously to my friends, so they can listen whenever they want.

gravity13··on Show HN: Milkshake – Real-time playlists with friends over websockets
This is fucking awesome. Nice work!

gravity13··on KaTeX: Math typesetting for the web
Great work! Would love to read a blog post in the future about how you guys did your layout engine behind this.

gravity13··on Intelligent chat that makes your team communication twice as fast
The other day I saw a billboard on the side of the freeway for a casino which stated in big gold lettering, "HIGHER CHANCES TO WIN!"
gravity13··on Tiiny – New App from Kevin Rose's North
I personally love photos too small to look at. I want to see many of them!
gravity13··on Ask HN: What are some Bay Area startups that don't use an open office plan?
I had a similar situation, but it made sense. Instant messaging grants the asynchronicity of emails without the overhead of long waits between replies.

When you want to talk to somebody without interrupting them, it's ideal. I might also suggest more 'got a sec?' type messages to get more of the swifter voice conversations.

That and sometimes we engineers prefer to build our sentences rather than blurt them.

gravity13··on Ask HN: What are some Bay Area startups that don't use an open office plan?
In red Victorian chairs with tall oversized backrests.

gravity13··on Silent Teacher – A game to learn how to code
I've been doing something like this for regex as a side project.

One of the biggest things I'm thinking about is determining the adaptive algorithm that places you on different portions of the learning experience.

My current strategy is to compose a concept map of all the basic concepts and then devise a proficiency metric on each concept, which might be some aggregate of [correct on first attempt + time to completion + learner history] or whatever else I think of. Then you progress through the content by traversing this graph (with a fair degree of stochastic nature so to keep things moving). I'm hoping collected data can then be used to devise a new concept graph - something of a dependency graph whose density might ultimately reflect an element interactivity [1].

For example, function use might be considered a singular concept, while a function which returns a function might be another concept. The latter is a bit more exotic to newcomers and you can use the metrics determined by the former to gauge a pace to give the learner, but it's a foundational concept which most concepts in functional programming depend on and it might not be fair to consider it a single concept in the learning process until the schema is well-established.

Ideally, within a few questions answered you get pushed up to a state where you're actually learning something, no matter what your proficiency.

gravity13··on Despite FAA Setbacks, Amazon Prime Air Makes Notable Hires
Interesting. But the real question we need to ask ourselves right now is: are these drones capable of delivering burritos? Because if so, imagine the possibilities...
gravity13··on Despite FAA Setbacks, Amazon Prime Air Makes Notable Hires
Well, shit, my HDMI cable just broke. I need a new one. Like, right now. I don't want to wait two days for it.

Hold on, let me (get in my car/wait for the bus/walk a few miles/order it with my phone, take a nap, and wake up with it at my door).
