graup··on Google Invests in $300M Submarine Cable to Improve Connection Between Japan, US
I wonder if this will improve connection to South Korea as well. Browsing .de websites from here involves a trip around the world, Seoul - San Jose - New York - London - Frankfurt for an average ping of 300ms.
graup··on Korea and Its Big-Ass Smartphones
> A basic 13" MacBook can cost close to $1800 there.

As far as I can tell, Apple prices in Korea are the same as in Europe. The US seems to be more an exception than Korea.

graup··on Korea and Its Big-Ass Smartphones
I presume the author lives in Japan? Living in Korea, I find the different perception interesting. To me, Korea is much more modern than any Japanese city. In contrary, to me Japan has some kind of "old flair" everywhere. Just how you'd expect from a nation that boomed some time ago – where the success has settled, so to say.

That contributes to my general perception of Japan as being very very different from all I know. Compared to that, Korea is much closer to the US or Europe. For traveling/exploring Japan is awesome, but talking about living I know why I chose Korea.

graup··on Korea and Its Big-Ass Smartphones
I thought it might also be the other way around. Because everyone gets a free smartphone even with the cheapest contract, KakaoTalk has this huge market.

graup··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
I like this. Some ideas that come to my mind:

Text analysis. Automatically match pages with similar content, so that even if everyone just posts their own stuff it will be connected to the rest automatically. I think the problem of a wiki-kind-of knowledge base is that pages are easily orphaned, especially if people just do brain dumps. Nobody wants to spend time tagging content, and you also don't want to manage a site-wide structure. It would be great if the content would organize itself. Could also be used to automatically link terms within text (to the most relevant page about this in the network).

To extend on the "nice tricks, something that they learned about": Let students (or even professors) put their lecture notes up, structurally and visually enhanced. KhanAcademy and edX do a great job providing professionally produced courses, but maybe my friend or I can explain a specific problem better in easier terms, and you'll be even able to comment on it or provide a fix for some error.

graup··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Also, add elevation information. Especially for cycling, would be great to see how a slightly longer route compares to a shorter one with bigger ascents.

Wrote this, googled it and actually found something fairly useful: http://www.doogal.co.uk/RouteElevation.php

graup··on Poll: Where are you currently living?
Yeah!
graup··on Arduino based curtain automation
So cool! To do the same was the original reason why I bought an Arduino a year ago, but I never really finished the project.
graup··on Detained in the US for “Visiting Thailand Too Much”
> The pictures of your kids taking a bath maybe interpreted in a different way by immigration officers

Reminds me of a story just like that. The only source I can find now: http://www.muripo.com/2013/06/07/elderly-man-arrested-for-po... but I'm sure quite it was on HN.

graup··on Can Japan reboot its startup culture?
Related, although not adding too much new: "Wake up Japan!" says Dave McClure https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5274049 http://fumijp.blogspot.jp/2013/02/wake-up-japan-says-dave-mc...
graup··on Samsung agency is buying off StackOverflow users
"Need some feedback on the app I am about to enter for the Samsung Smart App Challenge."

I guess that one could have worked. A real question on some programming problem having this as a side note...

They didn't really understand SO, but they could have done worse.

graup··on Google Correlate - Draw
Apparently the internet was (comparatively) less funny between 2006 and 2012: http://www.google.com/trends/correlate/search?e=id%3AO6yJxan...
graup··on Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit
That movie is usually regarded as being one of the more accurate ones. E.g. Joachim Gauck (Germany's current president and former head of the Stasi Archives) said that save some inaccuracies many things are presented very well. [1]

Definitely worth watching!

graup··on German Girl Turned Away at Border Due to Private Facebook Messages
"offenbar" can indeed mean "obviously", but in the context of a news article it's a weasel word more close to "apparently". To a native speaker, this word sounds as though they are presenting facts, but reading closely they are only assuming, just like smartician said.
graup··on A better git log
Me too. And I got it from here: http://alias.sh/compact-colorized-git-log

Which is almost the same as mentioned in this post.

graup··on Fun.js – Just a sketch
Good read, nice intro into functional programming. Thanks!
graup··on Show HN: Flattest Route - A web app to help you avoid hills in SF
Why is "-11%" rendered as "Moderate"? Everything <0 should be "Easiest", shouldn't it? Or maybe even add another category, "Downhill"?

Also, any idea why this doesn't work for Berlin, Germany? You could at least show the ZERO_RESULTS status somehow.

graup··on Big-O Algorithm Complexity Cheat Sheet
Well done!

As others pointed out, one might be better off really understanding them, but for a quick overview this is a very usable website.

graup··on Why is Spotify chugging upload bandwidth when it is not streaming?
In terms of this being HackerNews: It is actually a pretty smart and economic idea to use P2P in music streaming clients. When I first heard about this, I was excited. Thumbs up, Spotify!

Apart form that, that's really no news, you could read about that for years.

graup··on Show HN: Use Excel as a simple CRM
How is typing python commands better than using Excel's built in functions to do the same thing? (References, Lookups, Sorting, Filtering)
graup··on Is Berlin the new home for tech start-up business? [video]
I'd say the roots of that still lie in the post war structures of Germany. You know, the division of Berlin, the GDR. That's still just 23 years ago. The city center was first bombed and then at the frontiers, so it was cheap - to put it simple. East Berlin was / is especially cheap. Prices have however been increasing quickly for some years now. Gentrification is a "problem" of many parts of Berlin. And it's still cheap in comparison to Munich or Hamburg, not to speak of London.
graup··on Is Berlin the new home for tech start-up business? [video]
I'm from Berlin, so I naturally enjoy the kind of hype that's being created since one or two years ago. However, I'd like to stress what someone in the video said: It's just budding and really not yet comparable to New York or London. There are quite a couple of cool start-ups here now, but still few with innovative breakthrough technology and also few large investors. But I see it coming, too.

I guess this will also become a self-fulfilling prophecy. For ten years people have been telling how cool Berlin is and a lot creative people were attracted. Now everyone's telling about the new tech start-up scene and that will attract even more talented people - hopefully also large investors.

Interesting times ahead!

graup··on Social Video Sharing Glasses
Do you have images / 3D renderings of the current design? Would be a good thing to add to the indiegogo page.

Apart from that... thumbs up, great work!

graup··on Common problems with large file uploads
I use node.js with this plugin: https://github.com/felixge/node-formidable/

Works like a charm!
