grasshoper··on Feedback on my startup job aggregator
First of all, let me say I think your site is exceptionally attractive. I am immediately presented with the logos of scores of exciting startups. This engages me right away. Although, at the moment the front page is a bunch of Airbnb listings. I think the variety of logos does a lot for the site's first impression, so you might want to make sure there aren't too many listings of a single company on the front page. Also remember to add a favicon.

Featured links seems like a good way to go. Do you actually have companies paying for featured links at the moment?

Edit: Oh, and your Adap.tv logo is broken.

grasshoper··on Why Joost Failed, How Foursquare Succeeded, and Other Startup Lessons
Joost was only launched in 2007, so what he is talking about Youtube surpassing them?
grasshoper··on Will the real programmers please stand up?
If someone doesn't know some definition, they can look it up in a book.

If someone isn't able to solve problems, that isn't something you can fix easily.

I'm tired of all these people who do poorly on tests turn around to blame the test. Everyone is nervous during tests and interviews. Those who succeed do so because they can solve those problems like the back of their hand.

grasshoper··on FratMusic.com searching for tech co-founder
Surely the government would accept equity in an ambitious young startup poised to reshape the world of online music.
grasshoper··on I don't like Python. Does that make me a bad person?
Python for me is the language closest to pseudocode. There are no decorations and few gimmicks. You simply write your ideas down into code.
grasshoper··on Buzz Aldrin Is Not All That Impressed With Walking on the Moon
After all these years, he's still trying to make Michael Collins feel better about that whole moon-walking thing.
grasshoper··on Ask HN: Number of iPhone apps you published & income you get from them
How much did you pay to have this app created?

Also, by $10K in signups, does that mean seven or so signups for a $1.5K course?

grasshoper··on Django Hidden Hires
I feel that the market right now for Django is still too small for something like this to really work. Even the open Django job boards like http://www.djangogigs.com are pretty barren. How are you going to convince employers to fork over money without proof that there are lots of talented Django developers behind the walls of your site? And how are you going to convince developers to go through the trouble of opening up their code and submitting to tests without proof that it might get them access to lots of top-notch employers?
grasshoper··on Forbes 400 Data Shows Paul Graham Is Wrong
This is a false dichotomy. The financiers who made this list were all entrepreneurs. James Simons, John Paulson, Steve Schwarzman, David E. Shaw, etc all successfully founded companies. Their companies just happen to be investment firms. The fact that more founders of financial startups have made this list in past decade than founders of tech startups speaks to the dominance of the investment industry in recent years. It says nothing about finance vs start-ups. The Forbes list will always be dominated by those who took an entrepreneurial risk and had that bet pay off. Nobody, finance sector or otherwise, makes this list by being an employee. Not even top employees can reach this level. Jamie Dimon, Lloyd Blankfein, John Mack are not on here.

Now for more modest monetary goals, there's still no better field than finance. The only path to the Forbes list is through entrepreneurship, but finance opens up additional paths to millionairehood. Make it to Managing Director at an investment bank? Become a successful trader? You'll get 7-figures in yearly comp. Wanna do that in the tech world? You'll need a successful exit.

grasshoper··on Why I Returned My iPad
This may very well be the definitive iPad fluff piece.
grasshoper··on Does MongoDB 1.3.x (dev) silently lose your data?
Spot on. I came here to say just this. Dev branch or not, there is no way he could have missed this. I don't know how you can better advertise a limitation than this. Maybe he didn't realize he was on a 32-bit box. Maybe he didn't pay attention to how much data he would be using.

If you want to use Mongo for something serious, make sure you're on a 64-bit box. Memory-mapped file I/O is an important part of what makes Mongo so fast and attractive, but it has obvious limitations on a 32-bit box.

grasshoper··on If you could have one hire "for free" right now, what would it be?
I would hire a really rich investor and make him give me all his money and then go away.
grasshoper··on Chess rating system provides the best predictor of World Cup success
Cool site. I knew Harvard's yield was higher than the other schools, but I didn't expect Stanford and Yale to have higher yields so much higher than Princeton. I don't think this was true a few years ago when I was applying to schools.

How are you gathering information about where students were accepted? And where is Caltech in all this?

Also, you know that you can't just add the 25th/75th percentiles for individual SAT sections and come up with overall results, right?

grasshoper··on Apple fears the killer app
He doesn't actually care about porn; it's just an easily defensible position upon which to base controls over a wide variety of apps that harbor even the most tangential possibility to be used to view any pornographic content.
grasshoper··on What do Bill Gates and Richard Stallman have in common ?
It was much more difficult before they changed the scoring in the early 90s, but you're right that it really doesn't mean anything at that level. I didn't even know AP was around back then, but obviously nobody cares about a 5 on BC Calc or whatever. Gates understands that you have speak in terms more people can understand.
