gpsarakis··on Show HN: noteZilla - Interactive sheet music
Very nice! A minor bug: it seems to break once you exit fullscreen mode (pentagram goes underneath the instrument labels).
gpsarakis··on Show HN: TextBlob, Natural language processing made simple in Python
Seems to have an incredibly easy interface. Will test it. Well done!
gpsarakis··on Do you need a degree to be a coder?
Mentorship is not lost. In fact it is expanding. How many conferences, training workshops can one attend or how many blog articles & tutorials are we reading on a daily basis? Nevertheless, people tend to reject theoretical knowledge or value it more over practical. This can prove to be disastrous as well :).

Although some people have a fair grasp of machinery, imagine someone self-taught building their own reaping machine for your farm, would you try it or would you trust better someone with a more engineering background?

gpsarakis··on Do you need a degree to be a coder?
Although not entirely necessary or not guaranteeing the skills and expertise, a somewhat scientific (or engineering if you prefer) background is definitely more probable to give solid foundations for a programmer. I am guessing companies would prefer someone with a scientific background too.

Perhaps a degree in Computer Science specifically is not a prerequisite, that's certainly debatable. In particular, once you have some foundations on mid/advanced mathematics and logic I guess you can catch up with software systems and languages pretty quickly, depending of course on your ability to learn and talent, thus becoming self-taught on software engineering.

gpsarakis··on How to Convince Investors
Maybe a little out of context, but how easy is it to start talking about an idea without a working prototype? Of course it would make things easier, but maybe not always possible without a minimum funding.
gpsarakis··on Envelopes - Python email for humans
Seems really nice with a first glance. Are you considering any Django support in the future?
gpsarakis··on Programming languages to watch: LiveScript, Julia, Elixir
Julia and Elixir definitely seem worth checking. I especially like the interchangeability between Erlang & Elixir.
gpsarakis··on *args and **kwargs in python explained
I found this article http://freepythontips.wordpress.com/2013/08/03/a-url-shorten... also interesting and well-written.
gpsarakis··on How We Found All Of Optimizley’s Clients
So this is a search engine for HTML/CSS/JS code instead of content? Seems like a really useful idea, well done. It would be great if you could give an outline of your infrastructure and process, particularly the indexing strategy. Maybe another blog article?
gpsarakis··on Your Python Regular Expression's Best Buddy
Pythex looks really nice. I have used http://gskinner.com/RegExr/ so far and is pretty good.
gpsarakis··on Functional Programming with Python
Great presentation! Just a question/remark: Partial function application seems handy but using functools.partial to create a new function seems obsolete since you can use non-keyworded variable length argument lists with *args in your function definitions?
gpsarakis··on How powerful was the Apollo 11 computer? (2009)
The details on the software and the in-flight patching in the Apollo 14 mission are quite amazing. Another point to make is that nowadays we have tremendous amount of computing power combined with comprehensive numerical analysis tools on the planet which allows engineers to perform thorough simulations for the stages of space/air/sea travel and the behavior of vehicles.
gpsarakis··on Hyperloop: riding sound’s density peak to exploit the drag equation?
Just some info: Transonic/supersonic and near-speed-of-sound aerodynamics differ from traditional low velocity aerodynamics (I think the threshold is approximately 0.25Vs, so up to 1/4 of the speed of sound, I am a bit rusty on that). After that point you can't ignore compressibility phenomena, meaning that the density is no longer a constant, but also becomes a variable. You may be able to reduce drag by going very high in the atmosphere where the air is very thin (10^-6). Speed of sound also is an equation of the density and the temperature.
gpsarakis··on Offer HN : MVP for 200$
It would help I you added a link with some previous work (portfolio) from you, projects that you participated or an open source project of some kind that you contributed or started perhaps (if any).
gpsarakis··on Form letter response for engineering recruiting emails
(good) Software Engineer demand isn't likely to drop in the future I assume. Except if Skynet takes over and writes code by itself.
gpsarakis··on Techu v0.20b - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
Hey there! Make sure you check out the list of issues for planned features https://github.com/georgepsarakis/techu-search-server/issues... Add your own request!
gpsarakis··on Techu v0.20-beta: RESTful Search API - Moving closer to production release
Hey there! Make sure you check out the list of issues for planned features https://github.com/georgepsarakis/techu-search-server/issues.... Add your own request!
gpsarakis··on StarWars crawl text done with CSS
This is awesome!
gpsarakis··on Techu - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
You are right, we corrected this.
gpsarakis··on Techu - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
Thanks, I'll look further into that project.
gpsarakis··on Techu - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
In order to handle realtime indexes Sphinx requires using SphinxQL which in turn uses MySQL client protocol. So you'll need the MySQL client package. MySQL server is not strictly required and I am guessing can be replaced by Postgres since Django models make the DB backend transparent to the developer.
gpsarakis··on Techu - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
Seemingly yes. My most basic argument on that is that these components are commonly found in modern server stacks, so chances are that you are already using them, you know how to configure and setup. If I am already using Nginx & Redis and Sphinx as a full-text search engine, why not have something to facilitate the search in modern manner, almost out-of-the-box? As far as the clustering part you are referring, I don't have an exact scenario on my mind at the moment but I believe it can be done. Please keep in mind that this is the very first beta version and hopefully with several contributions, it will undergo many significant changes.
gpsarakis··on Techu - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
Thanks! It's a custom design. The designer's page is http://danaepanopoulou.com/
gpsarakis··on Techu - RESTful full-text searches with Sphinx, Redis, Nginx and Django
Thanks!

Sure, elasticsearch is absolutely great, no question on that. Nevertheless, a) it requires running Java and configuring JVM, b) Sphinx full-text search engine is really powerful, reliable and fast. So why not build a handy interface around Sphinx also? There is always room for more open-source software :).
