gowthamgts12··on Hetzner switches to new billing model
Elastic IPs i believe - you can attach/detach an IP to a server instead of having a new IP everytime
gowthamgts12··on Hetzner GPU Server
Why not go with hertzner cloud? No setup fees and you'll be billed by the usage. Still cheaper than other cloud providers.
gowthamgts12··on Ubuntu Looking at Discontinuing Its Source ISOs
It'll be useful in older days when internet bandwidth is limited and thus writing everything to a disc for sharing made sense.
gowthamgts12··on Apple, Disney, Warner, Paramount Global and Lionsgate Pause Advertising on X
Sorry no vulnerabilities here yet
gowthamgts12··on Apple Faces Potential Watch Import Ban After Federal Trade Ruling
> "Masimo has wrongly attempted to use the ITC to keep a potentially lifesaving product from millions of U.S. consumers while making way for their own watch that copies Apple," an Apple spokesperson said.

no idea whether apple owns the health related patents on apple watch. So, does this mean apple will give up rights on all of it's health related patents?

gowthamgts12··on Google Chrome pushes browser history-based ad targeting
care to elaborate?
gowthamgts12··on Fly.io Postgres cluster down for 3 days, no word from them about it
you can get away with DigitalOcean, Linode, scaleway, etc for raw compute and you can indeed use MRSK if you're using rails.
gowthamgts12··on Fly.io Postgres cluster down for 3 days, no word from them about it
may be it's to avoid search engines to not scrape these threads?
gowthamgts12··on Fly.io Postgres cluster down for 3 days, no word from them about it
> While we check the forum regularly, sometimes topics get missed. Unfortunately this thread one slipped by us until today, when someone saw it and flagged it internally.

If it really got missed, then I don't understand how the thread was made private to only logged-in users?

gowthamgts12··on Fly.io Postgres cluster down for 3 days, no word from them about it
Although, i have never used them, you can explore railway.app. it is the closest to fly.io and never heard any bad things.

I personally at the moment use digitalocean without any issues, but there's always the maintenance overhead of managing a server yourself.

gowthamgts12··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
My primary now is ungoogled-chromium and it works well. I tried FF multiple times, but eventually went back always to chrome for it's snapiness.
gowthamgts12··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
yes, but it's limited in terms of number of searches you can do and also they'll run ads on free version.
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2022)
I'm getting "You are blocked" banner! I'm trying to access from CHN, India.
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
SMIME won't solve this?
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Good open source alternatives to Google Analytics?
i've tried this for a high volume site, but since all events are stored in normal RDBMS, it gets slower [1][2]. it works well for low-traffic site though.

gowthamgts12··on Goddamn AWS seems to be down again 4th time this month alone
looks like it's a connectivity outage across all services - https://www.thousandeyes.com/outages/
gowthamgts12··on Tata Communications (Tier 1 ISP) and others having network issues in India
I thought AWS was down. i was unable to access docker hub, aws status page and lot of sites. my DO droplet in BGR was also unable to pull images from docker hub. weird.
gowthamgts12··on PostgREST 9.0

gowthamgts12··on Google had a plan called “Project NERA” to turn the web into a walled garden
well in case of developer tools chrome beats firefox. that's the only reason me and some of my friends are still using chrome for development.
gowthamgts12··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
are people still using brave after they have been caught multiple times - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(web_browser)#Controvers...
gowthamgts12··on “You don't need this overengineered goo for your project.”

gowthamgts12··on Amazon CEO unveils 55k tech jobs in his first hiring push

gowthamgts12··on Amazon CEO unveils 55k tech jobs in his first hiring push
I'm in India, and the recruiters are trying to make me apply. Even I was interested before, but after reading this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27569594. no thank you.
gowthamgts12··on IPv4 pricing
is it because of NAT adoption everywhere?

related: major indian telcos like Jio and Airtel are rolling out CGNAT.

gowthamgts12··on IPv4 pricing
exactly, we're operating a fleet of SMTP servers and IPv4 procurement is big problem. We do by asking AWS to allocate a block and send email traffic via those IPs. We want to adopt IPv6 but the current email infrastructure doesn't support this.
gowthamgts12··on YouTube channel “TechLead” creator has created a crypto and pulled the rug
"And I think what makes MillionToken a powerful and genius idea as a ex-google, ex-facebook tech lead myself. you know i'm a genius" - https://youtu.be/-pN8jCpEFy0?t=142

god. do people actually fall for this crap?

gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Android developers, are you OK giving your signing keys to Google?
I'm seeing this as Google enforcing control towards the platform. Lot of developers were unhappy with this, but when have a big corp listened to developers.
