gordon_freeman··on Which shows got their finale right, and which didn't?
Surprised that one of the greatest comedy shows of last 20 years "Parks and Recreation" did not make the cut. The finale was superb!
gordon_freeman··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
I own a 2023 Outback and love it!
gordon_freeman··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to the HN community!
gordon_freeman··on Why it's taking so long for Americans to get payments instantly
Having competition and options for customers would incentivize banks to provide good service affordably. Also, having local/regional/small banks in sparsely populated areas also fills a gap where big banks do not want to be due to economics and the ROI of cost/benefit. And not all customers can use digital tools to fulfill their banking needs and would like a physical bank nearby for their needs.
gordon_freeman··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
- The Invincible by Stanislaw Lem

- Solaris by Stanislaw Lem

- The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes

- Moneyball by Michael Lewis

- 1984 (re-read again!)

gordon_freeman··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Facebook has lost trust so many times that I can’t even count but it’s still a Megacorp, isn’t it?
gordon_freeman··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
I think what's going to happen is:

- Sam would return to OpenAI as CEO and Greg as President

- Sam's request to change the Board would be accepted and Board members will resign

- Ilya would be Out

- Sam would change the governance structure from current dual nonprofit+forprofit to just for-profit corp.

gordon_freeman··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
From NYT article [1] and Greg's tweet [2]

"In a post to X Friday evening, Mr. Brockman said that he and Mr. Altman had no warning of the board’s decision. “Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today,” he wrote. “We too are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.”

Mr. Altman was asked to join a video meeting with the board at noon on Friday and was immediately fired, according to Mr. Brockman. Mr. Brockman said that even though he was the chairman of the board, he was not part of this board meeting.

He said that the board informed him of Mr. Altman’s ouster minutes later. Around the same time, the board published a blog post."

gordon_freeman··on Steam Deck OLED
why don't have both? SD for indie games such as Factorio/Stardew Valley etc. and PSPo for AAA Sony exclusive games!
gordon_freeman··on Steam Deck OLED
Wow! This seems like a really good upgrade just for that screen and longer battery life. Time to finally buy the SD to play that ever-increasing backlog of games in my Steam catalog.
gordon_freeman··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
so the official race between ChatGPT vs Grok vs Bard has begun! I am assuming Apple will throw in its own AI bot sometime in next few months.
gordon_freeman··on Intuit Is Closing Personal-Finance App Mint, Shifts Users to Credit Karma
$100 per year? As much as Netflix sub for a personal fin app to track savings...it is way too pricy!
gordon_freeman··on Roombas at the end of the world
This blog is great. Thanks for sharing.
gordon_freeman··on Halfsies
5 perfect gives you 100% on those 5 attempts but then your overall % is calculated based on at what margin you missed out on other attempts. ex: if you got 42% instead of 50% in an attempt then that would impact your overall %.
gordon_freeman··on Halfsies
93% w/ 5 perfect cuts here. :) I now trust my 'visual intuition' more after playing this game! fun experience for sure!
gordon_freeman··on Causal inference as a blind spot of data scientists
There is an excellent video on YouTube by MIT Prof Sontag on Casual Inference worth checking out [1]

gordon_freeman··on Bill to ban hidden fees in California signed into law
will this apply to foreign transaction fees that Banks charge when someone books a flight for example originating from a foreign country to USA? These fees (~3% of whole transaction $)sneak up into the CC statements and always surprises me.
gordon_freeman··on The $900k AI Job Is Here
there is something wrong with the CA law if companies can post jobs with such huge salary range?
gordon_freeman··on Apple reports third quarter results
I read somewhere a while ago (can’t recall the source) that services has way more profit margin than their hardware and it’s somewhere around 50%.
gordon_freeman··on IRS launches paperless processing initiative
will this allow me to digitally file my amended federal taxes? That's the one thing that I was looking forward to when I started reading this and possible may impact most taxpayers but looks like IRS still needs amended tax returns in a paper form being mailed out to them?
gordon_freeman··on Update on Sharing
I used to subscribe ALL of the streaming services (Netflix, HBO Max, tv+, Paramount+, Disney+, Hulu etc.) but cancelled all of them because it was getting too much choices on too shallow content. Now I rely on PBS (Passport that comes with my monthly donation), YouTube and Peacock (comes free with Xfinity wifi) and if I like a movie I could just rent it. This is working out well for me.
gordon_freeman··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
I donate to KQED as a sustaining member. Can someone tell me if that money goes to just KQED in SF or also to NPR?

gordon_freeman··on Block loses 20% of value as Hindenburg Research alleges fraud
FYI: Hindenburg Research on Block (Square) has been going on for last 2 years. Not saying the release of the report is strangely coinciding with all the bad news we are having about Finance/Banking industries but wanted to add this info.
gordon_freeman··on Changes at YC
Also wanted to add: never forget that “the law of averages” is our friend when this happens. It ensures that there is always a good chance to lend somewhere if one keeps trying (submitting applications and giving interviews).
gordon_freeman··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
Do you think MSFT has rolled this out too soon rather than getting it tested with huge test user base like their own employees similarly to what Google is doing?
gordon_freeman··on Cal.com: Open Scheduling Infrastructure
Apple Reminders native app
gordon_freeman··on Amazon Closing AmazonSmile
This is disappointing news. I automated my donations to Signal Tech Foundation (the non-profit behind the Signal chat app) through purchases at Amazon. Now I will just need to directly donate to them separately.
gordon_freeman··on Ask HN: What is your new year's resolution?
I would like to add couple more titles to recommend: Firewatch, Fallout series and entire Metro series (2033, Last Light and Exodus). Fallout and Metro games are very similar to half life just not that hard to play.
gordon_freeman··on Ask HN: What is your new year's resolution?
For the great narration with stunning visuals and great story, you might like to play Bioshock series. Right now I think they sell entire collection (Bioshock 1,2 and infinite) on sale on Steam.
