goodroot··on Show HN: Ghost Pepper – Local hold-to-talk speech-to-text for macOS
Whisper is very good in many languages.

It's also in many flavours, from tiny to turbo, and so can fit many system profiles.

That's what makes it unique and hard to replace.

Ah yeah, longform is interesting.

Not sure how you're running it, via whichever "app thing", but...

On resource limited machines: "Continuous recording" mode outputs when silence is detected via a configurable threshold.

This outputs as you speak in more reasonable chunks; in aggregate "the same output" just chunked efficiently.

Maybe you can try hackin' that up?

goodroot··on Show HN: Ghost Pepper – 100% local hold-to-talk speech-to-text for macOS
They do, and they even have that nice microphone F5 key for it, and an ideal OS level API making the input experience >perfect<.

Apparently they do have a better model, they just haven't exposed it in their own OS yet!

Wonder what's the hold up...

For footpedal:

Yes, conceptually it’s just another evdev-trigger source, assuming the pedal exposes usable key/button events.

Otherwise we’d bridge it into the existing external control interface. Either way, hooks are there. :)

Nice one! For Linux folks, I developed https://github.com/goodroot/hyprwhspr.

On Linux, there's access to the latest Cohere Transcribe model and it works very, very well. Requires a GPU though. Larger local models generally shouldn't require a subordinate model for clean up.

Have you compared WhisperKit to faster-whisper or similar? You might be able to run turbov3 successfully and negate the need for cleanup.

Incidentally, waiting for Apple to blow this all up with native STT any day now. :)

Source? Rationale?

This is - at best - ignorant hyperbole.

The QuestDB team are among the best doing it.

Love the people and their software.

Great blog Jaromir!

goodroot··on What's Going on with Language Rankings?
The same is true for database rankings (db-engines).

If entrants are not artificially inflating "organic" signals via fake content spam (Twitter/X), then the criteria themselves are losing their signal strength (StackOverflow/GitHub).

The diffusion makes it increasingly difficult to understand which channels are important and which correlate to strength in the market.

Unfortunately, these can be more than vanity metrics.

Some VCs or financial markets may use these as methods towards valuation.

Article is updating too.

Hey! Thanks for upvoting.

Happy to answer any questions about deduplication. One thing that's not included in the write-up is that we also address out-of-order indexing alongside deduplication.

goodroot··on A Zoomer explains her generation's malaise to older generations
For clarity, this response is personal.

Attitude is a potion or a poison.

Make the choice.

Want demons? You'll find them.

Want help? You'll find it.

Many, many people have spent time figuring it out.

Many, MANY people have went into professions or made life style choices to help.

The will to overcome your own narcissism and self pity are key to any healing.

goodroot··on A Zoomer explains her generation's malaise to older generations
It's the Internet: All the "debunkings" have also been "debunked".

From the article...

Monogamy is the corollary for the debunking of love.

That's very silly. Love is much more than marriage.

"Church" foibles is the corollary for the debunking of Faith.

That's also very silly. Faith is much more than church or religion.

In other times and other cultures, spiritual insight removed the roots of suffering.

goodroot··on A Zoomer explains her generation's malaise to older generations
Gosh that's sad.

Zoomers are in this very forum - hi Zoomers.

Hang in there.

Whatever precipitating causes led to such suffering, know that we're _here_, _now_, together.

You aren't as alone as it might seem.

And hey, try to relax a little. We'll figure it out.

goodroot··on Some thoughts about The Verge article on SEO
Danny is clearly upset, and I would be too. We all love the Internet. Imagine being fingered in an article as some mad SEO guy who is among "the people who ruined the Internet". The Verge is a big platform...

Also, SEO is of the more voodoo & charlatan filled branches of technical esoterica. Very little of it is falsifiable or clear. And there is quackery as far as the eye can see.

Transparency into search algos would be better for us all. But the cost of algo transparency is transparency into adtech. And that's a hill Google will die on, and why we need alternatives.

goodroot··on What a third world war would mean for investors

goodroot··on Canada has fewer entrepreneurs today than it did 20 years ago
Anecdotes on top of anecdotes, but this post captures the Canadian mentality well in my opinion. Though his name is _verboten_, Jordan Peterson goes off in this direction. His common words are that Canadians are suspicious of success.

I don't quite know why the culture is like this, and I'm not sure it's a problem. Useful to take a step back and realize that Canada is a very different culture than the US, and there simply is a different value system.

Summed up in:

> A lot of this is simply that Canadians do not desire to be rich and prioritize not being poor.

goodroot··on You're not lacking creativity, you're overwhelmed
These posts pop up every now and then. Too much rationalism in this approach for sense. But I get it, it's difficult to sell letters when you're warning people against reading letters.

As a lay student of Buddhism, there's a much more simple and effective route.

Meditate.

A clean, crisp, quiet break into your own internal fortress of solitude. Curating as a means of establishing a creative sandbox makes sense to me, when the creative process opens. But concentration and focus is a skill and it can be developed. Trying to develop it through consumption is very difficult and counter-intuitive.

Your own internal world can surpass any notebook. Have you heard of the Method of Loci? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_of_loci It's applied meditational creative construction, it's been used by Grand Master memory champions, and it's all inside. Even if you do not apply the projector in your mind to such purposes, simply meditating can make much of this process subconscious. You do less, think less and yet remember and "receive" more.

New account eh?

What's the point of this perspective?

Please add something constructive.

Their data did not look for cause, it looked to measure the current.

It's refreshing to get non-sensationalized reporting. We can draw our own - very obvious - conclusion. And no, it isn't so that the 'WEF will take away your freedoms'.

goodroot··on Replacing Engineering Managers with AI Agents
> but the social and communication skills these companies value so hard are actually easily done by AI

Can you expand this premise?

It invalidates not just managers, but therapy, virtually any social function.

goodroot··on Replacing Engineering Managers with AI Agents
Initially I had a big grin thinking it was satire. But honestly I'm not sure!

Which I suppose means it's the best kind of satire. :)

goodroot··on Replacing Engineering Managers with AI Agents
This article presents a very strange take.

> It might sound dystopian, but setting emotions aside and viewing it purely from a business perspective, the idea of replacing engineering managers with AI offers potential efficiencies.

A manager is there precisely to optimize for business objectives. They are not your paid friend, therapist or life coach.

The "AI" sea change that obsoletes the manager will first replace the producer.

Consider it from the present day case of out-sourced labour, which is as real and present as AGI.

Managers are more likely to be valued when out-sourcing production, as business/human organization and communication become the bottleneck vs. productive capacity.

If the value of production is driven even lower via generative automation, such that automation is cheaper than outsourcing, then managers are at risk because they exist by ratio relative to the productive labour force. Out-sourcing often leads to an expanded labour force due to market imbalances (3 for the price of 1!). This results in an increase in management before automation >first< reduces the size of the labour force, which only then reduces the need for management.

goodroot··on How to (not) invent concurrent algorithms
And it does so with three links across three paragraphs.

From the QuestDB article:

> First, I found the Double Instance Locking[1] pattern at the amazing Concurrency Freaks blog[2]. This pattern is very similar to the one I described here. It also uses 2 internals structures and readers are alternating between them. It uses a read-write lock to protect the map being mutated. Given there is only a single writer then at any given time there is at least one internal map which is available for reading. This gives readers lock freedom.

> It's fair to say that the Double Instance Locking pattern is simpler to reason about. It decomposes the problem better. But I'd still argue my contribution is the trick with delayed replay of the last operation - if writers are sufficiently rare, then writers won't be blocked at all.

> The same blog also links to the paper Left-Right: A Concurrency Control Technique with Wait-Free Population Oblivious Reads[3] which on the surface also looks similar. It claims not only Lock-Freedom, but also Wait-Freedom. I have yet to deep dive into it.

goodroot··on Old Age and Creativity
A beautiful comment that resonated with my own personal, err, “diarrhea of the mouth”. Still a goof and a ‘yute, yet trying to stay slow, present and grateful for the stages of my life. Even the wince-worthy ones.

Favourited & thank you.

goodroot··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2022)
Elastic | Worldwide, with some exceptions | Full-time | REMOTE | elastic.co

Elastic is rebuilding our documentation from the ground up. Our docs consist of over 200,000 pages and are read over 90,000,000 times a year. It is a challenging project with many rewards.

New stack includes React, Next.js & will be built on Vercel's edge network. The underlying library we're building will eventually be ran and maintained as an OSS project -- terrific opportunity for highly visible, rewarding, valuable and freely distributed work.

If you are a *code-capable designer* or *frontend engineer* looking to have fun and make a great impact with a small, vibrant team, we'd love to meet you.

Highlights include:

* Health coverage & strong salary with equity

* 40 hours of VTO a year & 16 weeks parental leave

* International team!

* The exciting company behind Elasticsearch, Kibana, and more

* UX @ Elastic is a stable, well-run & well-lead org

Email kellen[at]elastic.co with your resume and any other information you feel you'd like to share. Happy to have a discussion to tell you more about the project before we begin any processes.

FYI: Postings are not open yet, will be very soon -- this is the first, early reach out.

goodroot··on Adults who microdose psychedelics report lower levels of depression and anxiety [pdf]
Psilocybe cubensis - in particular, the "Golden Teacher" strain. It is native to the Americas, and cultivated in Vancouver. Received in full fruiting body form, ground in to powder for consistency of dosage. Initially, I started with .10g, up to .20g. Most of the dosing is between those values.

The schedule is 5 on, 2 off, and it's taken in conjunction with B3 (Niacin) and Lion's Mane (a non-psychoactive mushroom). All together, the mix promotes neurogenesis.

Combined with tools like meditation, exercise, and a supportive environment, it can do wonders to help re-construct toxic patterns built from long-term depressions and anxieties.
