goodbyesf··on What Plants Are Saying About Us
It's the same reason comments criticizing journalists or mega media corporation is flagged now. Most social media are propaganda platforms.
goodbyesf··on What Plants Are Saying About Us
Plants slogan: 'The only good vegan is a dead vegan'.
goodbyesf··on Meta in Myanmar, Part III. The Inside View
> This article uses Meta’s own definition, next question

The definition meta was forced to adopt by the likes of the author. A nonsense definition. And it's not just meta, it's pretty much every american and european company was forced to adopt it. How amazing huh?

goodbyesf··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)
> Maybe Greek society was not a homogeneous mass, and some parts of it nurtured free thinking while others reacted against it?

So then your assertion was incorrect: 'they started a culture of free thinking that grew into philosophy, logic, and scientific inquiry.' They didn't start anything? Some of them did? What are you even saying then?

It's idiot's logic to claim that greeks nurtured free thinkers while admitting they killed free thinkers.

Instead of digging yourself a bigger hole, just admit you were wrong.

goodbyesf··on Singapore: Right to own a car costs $76,000. And that doesn't include the car
> One person smoking makes a 30 foot diameter smell like skunk.

Even better, a couple of idiots in a car smoking with their windows rolled down.

I'm all for banning smoking cigarettes or weed in public spaces. If you want to ruin your health, do it in the privacy of your own house.

goodbyesf··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)
> they started a culture of free thinking that grew into philosophy, logic, and scientific inquiry.

Culture of free thinking? Socrates, the most iconic free thinker of all time was forced to commit suicide by the greeks. So much for a culture of free thinking.

> They also sentenced some of their free thinkers to death for not worshipping the gods but that’s a separate issue.

It isn't. It directly contradicts and refutes your assertion.

goodbyesf··on September was the most anomalously hot month ever
My experience with climate change fearmongering. 'Most ever' turns out to be 'the last few decades'. Lets see shall we?

Headline: "September Was the Most Anomalously Hot Month Ever"

In the article: "September was the most anomalously warm month ever recorded."

So september was the most anomalously hot month ever 'recorded'? So what? The last 50 years? 100 years? Which isn't saying a lot. They always misrepresent and lie and fearmonger. But why?

Since the 90s, 'global warming' ( now climate change ) was supposed to have ended the earth and humanity a dozen times already. Yet we are all still here. Just like the same peak oil nonsense. Remember when oil was supposed to run out and civilization was supposed to collapse?

goodbyesf··on China is flooding Taiwan with disinformation
If there is any foreign interference, it would be from britain, canada, israel, etc.

What russian or chinese interference is there when there is 24/7 anti-russian and anti-chinese propaganda?

goodbyesf··on Pava Marie LaPere, 26, murdered in Baltimore is Forbes 30 Under 30 tech CEO
Seems like Forbes 30 under 30 is cursed. Every year it seems like one is going to jail for fraud or ends up being murdered.

goodbyesf··on Is Math Real?
> Math is a model of the universe in the same sense that a world map is a model of the earth.

That describes pre-1900s math we inherited from the greeks. With advent of non-euclidean geometry and abstract math, math is no longer bound to objective 'reality'.

goodbyesf··on Social media platform X could go behind paywall
Musk was never a free speech absolutist. He claimed he supported 'legal speech'. Which turned out to be a big fat old lie. The guy is a state actor. People like that are never for free speech and lie all the time.

Also, to be fair, there was time before musk ( like 10 years ago ) when twitter and much of social media had some semblance of free speech. I don't think that era is ever coming back.

goodbyesf··on 'Atomic Energy' Book Signed by Einstein, Oppenheimer, Bohr, Enola Gay Crew
You left the continent to escape americans but still use our social media? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?
goodbyesf··on Plants can detect sound
> Molecules touch your nose and you smell things. Air vibrates your inner ear hairs and you hear things. Photons hit your eyes and you see things (not sure if this counts but it seems like it could).

You can see things in the dark with your eyes closed, you can hear things in a vacuum sealed isolation chamber, you can smell things without any there being anything smelly and you can feel things without touching anything.

Rather than every sense being touch, every sense seems mental.

goodbyesf··on Credit card debt collection
> If I use a credit card, I pay up to 20% on the outstanding amount.

Key is never having outstanding debt. Pay your credit card balance in full. Most people with credit cards do this. I have never met anyone who paid any interest on their credit card because everyone I know pays it in full each month.

> And I have never met anyone who had a fraudulent charge (without being dumb).

And? The point is if it happens, you are far safer with a credit card than a debit card. Once the money is gone from the credit card, it's the credit card companies problem. Once the money is gone from your debit, it's your problem.

> To me, I cannot understand why anyone would use a credit card unless debit isn't accepted.

Because credit card is more secure. As the OP already told you.

As long as you have financial discipline, using a credit card is smarter than using a debit. It's a simple concept.

goodbyesf··on A small-town police officer took down a large match-fixing ring in tennis
> So they probably care more about the impact of match fixing on the "fairness" of sports betting

Not the 'fairness' of sports betting, but the impact on the sports betting industry. If people think sporting matches are fixed, they will stop gambling which is bad news for the gambling industry. It's why the NFL, which is now in bed with the gambling industry, is so paranoid about players gambling. It not only is bad for the NFL, but especially so for the gambling industry they are partnering with.

goodbyesf··on Apple is reportedly spending ‘millions of dollars a day’ training AI
'Millions of dollars per day' is about $1 billion a year? Considering Apple's annual revenue is about $400 billion and its net income is about $100 billion, it's more than reasonable for apple to spend millions per day beefing up their AI.

I guess 'millions of dollars per day' gets more clicks than 'apple spends less than .25% of its revenue on AI'.

goodbyesf··on Apple vs. Meta: The Illusion of Privacy
What's with the pathetic apple fanboyism? They are one of the biggest vaccuums of data. They will use that data for money just like everyone else. Apple's just late to the ad game.

Years ago it was google fanboyism with 'don't be evil'. Now it's the unbearable apple privacy fanboys and the insufferable tesla/spacex cult members.

goodbyesf··on National Film Board of Canada
> Guy, I don't know who you're upset with or why, but it's not me.

I'm not mad at ya. Just your stupidity.

> You know that just means the perils of being a minority in a democracy, right?

Hence why the US is a republic.

> What on earth are you talking about?

'It's funny how the foundation of modern democracy ( US ) was created on distrust of government and elites, but the 'democracies' that worship british royalties was founded on slavish worship of authority.'

Or you can play your silly and childish games.

goodbyesf··on General warns that China’s military is seeking to exploit US troops, veterans
The nerve of china. It's the US military's job to exploit US troops and veterans god dang it.
goodbyesf··on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes
No shit. What's next? PR firms pay reddit power users to push ads and propaganda on the subs they control?

If PR firms can pay the nytimes to sell war, surely they are capable of buying a few positive reviews for movies.

Yelp is the last straw for me. If yelp reviews are found to be bought and sold, I'll lose all faith in social media and the reviews ecosystem. If we can't trust yelp, then who can we trust?

goodbyesf··on ERNIE, China's ChatGPT, cracks under pressure
> except no one actually wants to be on such a forum.

Wrong. Most people do. There's a reason why forums had to be censored. If no one wanted it, we wouldn't need censorship because such forums wouldn't exist in the first place. The elites and people with agenda want a censored forum. But that's life.

Censorship online didn't come from 'the people'. It came from the elites via journalists, politicians, NGOs, etc.

> The question isn't whether models shouldn't be censored or not, but who should be the ones doing the censoring.

I agree with you here. Anything important will be controlled. Just like the internet, google, facebook, etc. If it becomes important then control and censorship is inevitable. The question is who? With china it's obvious the party is. Everyone can agree on that. Who is behind the censorship in the US. It isn't 'the people'. So it can't be the spineless politicians. So who or what cabal forced everyone from reddit to twitter to censor uniformly?

goodbyesf··on Paul Buchheit interview (2018)
> Reading this makes me want switch jobs. I want to again work somewhere where in the morning I wake up and feel excited to work

Good god. Imagine if your life's ambition is to find a job that makes you excited to work. A slave who wants to be excited about his enslavement. A slave owner's dream.

True dystopia isn't some brutal authoritarian whipping the slave into submission. True dystopia is one that teaches a slave to want to be the best slave he can be.

goodbyesf··on National Film Board of Canada
> The way you describe being forced to pay sounds like you think you're living in an autocracy.

No. He's describing tyranny of the mob. Which is worse than an autocracy. At least in an autocracy you know you are being fed a pile of bullshit.

> Public funding of it is essential to a healthy society.

No it's not. It's called government propaganda.

> The idea of funding it is to free the artists from those constraints.

No. It's to constrain artists to agenda.

What you are really saying is I agree with the government propaganda and hence support it. That's all you are saying.

In a democracy, government should be apolitical. People like you prove that democracy is actually a bad idea. It's funny how the foundation of modern democracy ( US ) was created on distrust of government and elites, but the 'democracies' that worship british royalties was founded on slavish worship of authority.

goodbyesf··on Bismarck’s War
> Germany being divided in South and North Germany (or eventually forming a somewhat loose federation) wouldn’t exactly have been a tragedy for the German nation.

Germany's late development was indeed a tragedy for the german nation. Compared to france, britain, russia, etc, their inability to unite and compete relegated germany to a 2nd rate nation forever and the german nation has little say in world affairs compared to britain, france and russia. There is a reason why britain, france and russia are permanent members of the security council while germany isn't.

> And it likely would’ve meant no WW1

WW1 was a result of interests outside of germany. WW1 happens regardless of where germany exists or not.

goodbyesf··on Bismarck’s War
The quote is pure nonsense as is most historical narratives.

> Believing that unification had come about as a result of military competence

It did.

> they mapped the future of the German Empire in terms of military power.

All empires are created in terms of military power. In what terms was the german empire supposed to compete against the british, french, russian, american, japanese, etc empires? The statement cannot be dumb because it's devoid of substance. It's literally a meaningless statement.

> Thus, Chrastil concludes, German victory in 1871 became catastrophic not just for Germany but ultimately for the rest of the world.

How was it 'catastrophic' as without it, germany wouldn't have existed? Also, 'rest of the world'? Germany's rise and germany's role in ww1/ww2 primarily affected germany's neighbors. Just because it was catastrophic for parts of europe doesn't mean it was catastrophic for everyone else. It's the same nonsense like 'the world is against russia' when most of the world is on russia's side or neutral. Like they all read from the same propaganda manual.

goodbyesf··on Four Lectures on Standard ML (1989) [pdf]
> This website looks hilariously mangled on mobile.

Not much better on the browser though they seemed to have cleaned it up a bit since my last visit. Many years ago when I visited the website to download smlnj for class, I had to double and triple check the url and google/bing/etc the website to make sure it was not a spam site because of how barebones and amateurish the site looked.

> Which at first I kind of expected, until it said at the bottom it was updated in 2022.

I think the last update year is actually 2020. 2022 is the release year of the latest SMLNJ version. I think they could have layed it out better but smlnj is mostly for academic use so I'll let it slide.

goodbyesf··on The Pentagon and CIA have shaped thousands of movies into effective propaganda
We would be up in arms because the propaganda would tells us to be up in arms. It's remarkable how our feelings towards each other and to foreign countries are entirely shaped by propaganda.

Anyone here old enough to remember freedom fries?

goodbyesf··on Human embryo models grown from stem cells
> Reducing human suffering is a noble goal and infertile couples could benefit from this research.

The research isn't about reducing human suffering. No research is. All research is about attaining new knowledge.

> I would rather have western world make giant leaps in this field and also set the direction of ethics here rather than just banning it and leaving it up to Russia and China to conduct this sort of research in their secret facilities.

Why? Given the history of the western world in biological, chemical and nuclear genocides, why is it better that the west make sets the directin of ethics than russia or china. The west has proven it hasn't a ethical bone in our body.

Research should happen because humans want to learn and advance. The west ain't saints. The russians and chinese certainly aren't monsters, especially compared ot the west.

goodbyesf··on J.D. Salinger and wielding copyright as self-protection
> Maybe the estate is so sensitive because the unpublished stuff isn't as good as the published stuff?

Or it could be the author's wish since the unpublished material may contain sensitive information. TS Eliot most famously had an embargo on publishing his letters 50 years after his death or the death of his 'mistress' depending on whoever died later.

Salinger's literary reputation is already set. Don't think any new material will add to or detract from it.
