going_ham··on Ask HN: What is one book you would recommend everyone to read?
Short story: I was lost during the early college days. I already had the book in my home for a while and decided to go through it. Once I finished it, I adopted some of the ideas from the book. Immediately, I realized how powerful the concept of acting (karma yoga) is!
going_ham··on I used indie hacking to sponsor my own green card
Thanks for the awesome post! Really insightful.

Most people in the tech hypes about US. Is it really worth as the hype to go through all these burdens and immigration process?

Does it really make a difference being somewhere else (for eg. Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK etc.) and being in the states? I am really curious to know about it.

There is a meme that most of the open source projects stand because of some European dude doing off the charity work! The European companies also offer work permit for the qualified people!

going_ham··on My first three months with a Nokia dumb phone as a daily driver
I used one of the variants of the Nokia 100s model for 3 years. (2017 - 2020). After using these dumb phones my habit changed and I don't exclusively rely on my phone anymore. Even though I have a smartphone now, it is practically useless when I am _inside_ my room. I use my phone to just communicate and occasionally read PDFs. It doesn't have any social media apps, so the worst I do is browse the web once in a while.

But one huge advantage smartphone has is the camera and the maps. These are really the killer feature for a smartphone. Everything else is a bonus!

The bonus includes mobile banking, receiving important emails, and so on!

Life is simple when you throw away the cancer apps from smartphones. Then proceed to use it as it should be used i.e. just a phone!

I think that pineapple topping on the pizza meme is designed by pizza elitist to fool normal people from trying it out. Once you try pizza with pineapple toppings, it gives this extraordinary taste. Sweet, sour and salty. All at same time!
going_ham··on Do success stories cause false beliefs about success?
Nobody writes it, but it's okay to have average job, with average life and average family as long as you can enjoy your life! Why burden yourself with idea of success and setting expectations. At this point I am sure life doesn't give anything unless you look for it. And even if you seek, there is no guarantee. So I think it's waste of energy.

My experience so far.

I am really glad that I learned how stability is necessary in life.

I have been led into this "work and be successful" bias my reading PG's essay, story about motivated dropouts, Outlier's etc. I thought putting hours was enough to be successful! But nah, nothing is possible without some play of luck. Luck feels like multiplier.

Therefore, now that old perspective has changed, I am able to see completely new perspective. Instead of startup I look for long term careers. Instead of chasing money, I chase my own curiosity with optimism. I accepted that I amount to nobody!!

The beauty of this approach is I can let go of "I must do something important" mentality and explore anything which may sound super dumb and useless to society. For example, the other day I was looking into Gameboy architecture, one day GDB. That day I learnt you can record and replay programs in GDB! They don't teach this at college.

The hindsight is I get to enjoy the life! To me enjoying my life is being successful ;)

going_ham··on Why don't I have a blog?
It maintains a level of commitment. I don't normally write for myself, because I will always keep going back to the original source. But when I need something, that I feel like I need for a long time, I write it as if someone else is going to read it. This helps me escape all the lazy points that I have!
going_ham··on Why don't I have a blog?
I have a blog, to write things as a note for myself. It has helped me keep pushing and satisfying my curiosity. I write random things. I don't even have trackers or cookies enabled because I do not care if blog gets any view!

So if you are afraid that people will find it boring, then write for yourself. Writing for oneself means you want to be able to write in a way such that you will go back to your note to remind you of things you learned.

As you as said, pointing to the original is enough. If that is it, then just log those links and when you have time, go through them again! Once you will understand it is quite time consuming to review it, you may start writing!

Good thing about writing in public is that you will want to set a bar for yourself. Something like commitment! Setting this bar will slowly improve your thought process and it brings other positive effects!

going_ham··on An Honest Comparison of VS Code vs. JetBrains – 5 Points
Debugging is generally easy with IDE. I use Emacs for writing code, but when it comes to debugging nothing beats a proper IDE! It just makes things a lot easier.

Although GDB can be scripted using python, but I haven't found a better way to do it by myself. If someone knows that it will be awesome!

It would really be awesome to have some quick-start guide on hacking GDB for making it more usable for intermediate programmers!

going_ham··on Quit Your Job
If it does, you will be extremely delighted knowing there is a book by Marcus Aurelius called Meditations. The book withstood the test of time. He has written it clearly and explained his reasons in a proper manner. He was a roman ruler and everything is from that perspective. Most of the people here are probably not making enough money to get by the everyday mundanes of life. So things like self-actualization are far away from reach. Therefore, when someone drops in an article like this, saying to quit job, isn't it disrespectful for those trying to get their needs? Sure, if everyone had a comfort cushion, I guess internet would be a better place. But the reality is quite harsh! Therefore, people may say harsh things but they don't mean it. It's just to get by.

I hope this isn't offending!

going_ham··on Quit Your Job
Shamelessly copying from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius adding cosmos and fancy word so that homework doesn't look like the original. ;)
going_ham··on Ask HN: Do most of the regulars have their own side projects that make money?
I notice these kinds on comment whenever some people share something with "Shown HN: I made this and it makes revenue" kind of posts. There will be few people there, sharing their experience. That is where the bias started from and I got more curious about it whether it is actually true or not!
going_ham··on Search engines and SEO spam
> But wouldn't this predict that results would be much better on Bing and other search engines that don't have much presence in the "put ads on random sites" market?

Honestly what I think is every search engine sucks these days, and Google manages to suck a little bit less.

The reason is because how easy it has been to publish low quality content. It's rare to find high quality contents. The issue with search engine is that they don't show these rare contents. These aren't recommended by default. These are hidden.

What happened is the recommendation system is broken! If there weren't any neural networks making decision, it would have been different issue. But with modern search engines deploying recommendation system, I think it is all about rich gets richer scheme. You can't recommended new or fresh but quality content because it was never visited! So, when the entire backend is relying on user data, the system is being fed crappy data because users don't care and those who do are few in number.

As long as system is making revenue, it will be this way. Most people never care at all and would never be bothered because they only care for simple queries. If anyone deviates from the norm, Google search results are pretty bad like every other search engines.

going_ham··on Apple Glasses
It would be fun to watch which one of these companies make the tech actually usable. Everything is already there, it's just that we are missing some easily accessible form factor, that allows us to be in both reality at same time!
going_ham··on Ask HN: As an introvert/ambivert, how can I reap benefits from social events?
> Seize on common interests and think of what can be done after the event, and make a plan for it during the event. If someone mentions a favourite bar/cafe/restaurant, say you'd love to go. Same goes for movies, business talks, exhibitions, etc.

I never thought of this! Thank you for the suggestion!!

going_ham··on Ask HN: As an introvert/ambivert, how can I reap benefits from social events?
> Or maybe you see a purpose, but you're failing to realize that purpose?

This is the main reason.

When I attend these events, I enjoy it and find it interesting. But as soon as time passes on (say a week or two), I feel like I wasted more time on these events than necessary because it messed up with my schedules and deadlines. The extra time comes as result of follow-ups after the event, the wait-time for decisions, and so on. If there is no follow-up, then it will not be beneficial at all and it loses all the purpose of having to attend it.

So it's hard trying to find the right balance between these things and work. Therefore, I asked the question so that even if I attend few of these events, I can create reliable connections out of it instead of having to repeat the same process repeatedly? Hope this clarifies a little bit more.

going_ham··on Ask HN: As an introvert/ambivert, how can I reap benefits from social events?
Yes, I can enjoy these events, therefore I am looking for way to benefit from them (interactions, discussions etc), so that it can last even after the events ends. I can not follow up from there onwards. That's when my introvert nature kicks in. Meanwhile if I work on something I am interested, it lasts for a long time in the memory.
going_ham··on Ask HN: Why do companies take 2 months to send job rejection letter?
> I guess what I'm wondering is why do you care? It's like a girl ghosting you for 2 months and then saying she wants to break up. Whether it's right or wrong, why are you even still waiting around?

Totally relatable.

>If I'm honest, I've never seen what you're describing in tech.

I may have exaggerated by mentioning 2 months, but it took be 1 and half month on some case and 2-3 weeks on most cases. There was one which took more than 2 months.

> If you're talking about the first stage (reviewing CVs) then some companies will hold off on arranging interviews for a week or two so they can select applicants with the strongest CVs.

I didn't know about this one. It's really tricky for starting out without any connection. Because it's hard to get that chance :(

going_ham··on Ask HN: Why do companies take 2 months to send job rejection letter?
Thank you for the tips!
going_ham··on Ask HN: Why do companies take 2 months to send job rejection letter?
Please teach me on how to network? I am really bad at networking!
going_ham··on Ask HN: Why do companies take 2 months to send job rejection letter?
Sorry about putting it that way. I have no idea how to get answers at all. I have tried rewriting my CV, writing cover letter, doing projects, etc. but nothing is helping at all.

How should one apply for a job?

Any suggestions on this one! I don't understand how to land a job. Most people can get one by just applying, but for some reason, I can't. Can you link some resources or write tips on this one! That would be super helpful! I want to start from the basics with internships. Unfortunately, I get a generic reply that I am not even qualified for internships or working student positions.

Can you elaborate how you fake the heart attack when you are in different situations? Your idea seems really interesting as a life hack. There must be specific ways to clutch your heart?
going_ham··on It doesn’t take much public creativity to stand out as a candidate
> It just has to be evidence that you are capable of doing some aspect of the work.

I didn't think only this would make such difference. Thank you for marking that.

going_ham··on It doesn’t take much public creativity to stand out as a candidate
But how to start with it? If everyone starts doing this, won't this make it even tougher than it already is? I have been thinking about just dumping my notes in the internet, but whenever I look my notes, I just feel bad about it because it's nowhere as good as original source. And after a while the note feels like ripped off copy. Same with the bugs, hacks, tweaks. It feels like everything is just out there and I am not creating enough value. It will be really awesome if you can show some pointers! I mean it's hard to detail about bugs that are trivial to everyone else. I may not represent most of the people, but this starting thing is difficult because the quality doesn't meet imagination.
going_ham··on How to Work Hard
In fact there is a good video from Verassium [1]. One can't discount luck. There is no such thing as hard work. It's just the feeling of being in flow and whatever one does to make you re-live that flow, it's totally worth it.

Instead of working on hard problems, it's best to prioritize on optimum problem and get the best out of your situation. With optimum problem, I mean the problems that allow you to maximize your living, instead of believing on moonshot dream.

It's okay to dream, but putting expectations on dream is losing touch with reality. Sure in an ideal world, essays like this would be perfect motivation, but you are living in a world ruled by billionaires and plutocrats. So, as long as you get enough share of the pie, I don't think one should pursue the moonshot dream.

Rather invest this time on working on job (whole-hardheartedly) only during office hours, and actually try living a life outside of it. You don't have to be a superstar to live a life because humans have already lived for so long.

Stop believing these bullshit VC ideas. The real essence of this essay is understanding the flow and noticing the events that triggers flow. [2]

going_ham··on Just Be Rich
"Revolutionary" is a extreme word. I wanted to convey, "any better/slightly better product either in cost or performance."
