goatcode··on Productivity porn
1. I got really lucky

2. My cousin has a connection to cheap money and invited me into a social circle where I could use it

3. I was willing to make people angry and unhappy along the way

4. I somehow fit into someone else's plan, and I get some decent scraps of riches for existing and pretending to do something important

These seem to be the main keys to success. I will admit that someone who's completely incompetent is less likely to succeed with access to just one or two of the above (excluding 4, which can stand on its own for a period of time), but if he's got all of the first 3 or 4 alone, success is pretty well guaranteed, regardless of ability or worthiness. I'm sure there are exceptions, but the vast unwashed rabble of successful people I believe have something from the above list.

I was disheartened when I read about all these successful people and their lofty advice. I was more disheartened when I realized their advice is just the random stuff they happened to do that on their path to success, and that equivalent advice of the myriad failures that complement them would never be heard (and that both were of approximately equal value). Despite how in the overmind the notion of "correlation is not causation," this snake oil is surprisingly only beginning to go out of fashion.
goatcode··on SSD drives’ 40k-hour “death bug” continues to catch enterprises unawares
They now have a SSD report: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ssd-edition-2021-drive-stats-...
goatcode··on “Tactical” Infiltrated Everyday Life
The article was more aimed at being worried about anti-government activists, from what I read. Wearing a plate carrier with no plates isn't tacticool, it seems more just ignorant.
goatcode··on “Tactical” Infiltrated Everyday Life
No, there is a mentality along the median among those who are tac bros, and this article very clearly is either about or inspired by concerns regarding them. I was attempting to address the ignorance that backs up the intended primary points of it.

>but I bought them originally for the Urban SAR team I was on, and loved them enough to use them for camping, jogging, yard work, etc etc. Just high quality.

I doubt the writer would be concerned about you going camping, with regard to

>You're just saying: "No, they aren't the ones the article refers to, WE are".

goatcode··on “Tactical” Infiltrated Everyday Life
>or more potentially concerning calls to action?

big facepalm.

No civilian you can see all tac'd up is someone you should be worried about. He likely doesn't even train, not being able to find a legit range at which he wouldn't be harassed until he'd want to leave and not come back. Dudes who are balls-out tacticool are posers -- most of the gun community agrees on this.

goatcode··on SSD drives’ 40k-hour “death bug” continues to catch enterprises unawares
I'd imagine. Do they make stuff now that's intended to be spec'd for enterprise servers?
goatcode··on SSD drives’ 40k-hour “death bug” continues to catch enterprises unawares
Do SanDisk sell enterprise / data center class drives?
goatcode··on SSD drives’ 40k-hour “death bug” continues to catch enterprises unawares
The manufacturers whose drives they use provide a good basis for my consideration. I don't see certain names on their lists sometimes, so my search usually is narrowed down by that.
goatcode··on SSD drives’ 40k-hour “death bug” continues to catch enterprises unawares
No idea now. I usually look to BackBlaze's periodic drive performance reports when I'm shopping, but even that's been a while for me.
goatcode··on SSD drives’ 40k-hour “death bug” continues to catch enterprises unawares
It's been a while since I've been in the hardware-level IT side of things, but is it not unwise to run a production server with SanDisk drives?
goatcode··on Five Laws of Human Stupidity (1976)
I would refer you to the first basic law, dear sir or madam.
goatcode··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
Would there be a domestic target for the same ideas that you'd propose a foreign one(s), or do you believe there to be something more virtuous about South Korea et. al that'd make them better recipients of such things?
goatcode··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
>This is not the most cost effective way to do it.

What would you recommend?

goatcode··on Federal Reserve to increase interest rates by 75 basis points
What's worse: that person, or the company that that person runs, that has 10x the units that he might have otherwise, with a protective layer between the owner and the tenant?
goatcode··on Federal Reserve to increase interest rates by 75 basis points
Individual landlords may vary in how they treat you, but don't corporate also?

In my own experience: For corporate landlords, being a poor grad student or a tech worker didn't seem to make a difference; I was still treated like I didn't exist. In several instances there were serious issues with my unit that were affecting my health, and they were ignored. Individual landlords were awesome people -- fast and responsive to issues big and small, and even did things to make my stay better.

Seems that many results vary, but I suspect that when there's no human connection, you'll get a lot of bad stuff going on

goatcode··on Federal Reserve to increase interest rates by 75 basis points
The sad thing is that individual landlords are among the most responsive to tenant needs, while corporate landlords often are sons of Hell who should be Thanos-snapped out of existence.
goatcode··on How to advertise to developers: deep dive into paid developer marketing
> they only really believe other devs when it comes to tech

I have an issue with this one. When it comes to tech, I've found other developers to have opinions as strong as their actual knowledge is weak. It's been a hard thing to learn from some for this reason, given how over-agreeable I am in real life.

goatcode··on Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes
Perhaps, but that's not what the comment was addressing. If it were, your point would not address living after having become a missile.
goatcode··on Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes
What would you say should be the threshold for increased mortality that would subject a given behavior to heavy taxation and regulation?
goatcode··on Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes
>Arguably we should/could have penalties for failing to get enough exercise, though there are almost certainly better ways to reduce dangerously sedentary lifestyles

This is my point: we pick and choose, and we're subject to the whims of society, when it comes to what we deem unacceptable. Citing a collective norm that potentially could have been influenced by societal ebbs and flows is not an objective argument, ever.

goatcode··on Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes
Be that as it may, that wasn't the point I was replying to.
goatcode··on Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes
Should we treat all behaviors that are associated with a significantly increased mortality rate the same way, or should we pick and choose depending on the political and social context at the time, like we do with seatbelts?
goatcode··on I regret my website redesign
>I’m not trying to bash the agency here

He should be trying to do so.

goatcode··on High property taxes are good
Here's a crazy idea: 0% for primary residence, 50% for income properties (rentals, etc.). Will it kill renting? Heck no, not for property owners who live in one of their own units, at least. It might affect individuals and entities who hoard and exploit people, though.

goatcode··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
Very true -- even among those who put on a facade of altruism. Those who are extreme about it have often had other motivations, and it ultimately boiled down to selfishness (either for material resource or personal safety, or for social rewards for appearing a certain way). It truly is sad!
goatcode··on Glassdoor not so anonymous
What about a badge for companies who unsuccessfully sued for the info? This would both guard against bad companies who are the genuinely litigious jerks we want to see hurt, and give pause to employees to frivolously libel themselves to attack a company without ground (something that would be clear were the company to successfully sue).
goatcode··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
This of course applies to all environmental issues, both foreign and domestic. There would be a lot more partnership and a lot less animosity if we universally adhered to your notion. We might actually get something done!
goatcode··on Success stories are propaganda (2017)
I'd agree; you can't boil it down to just luck or just hard work. I think it a correct notion that fortune favors the prepared, and neither luck nor hard work on its own suffices.

If you look more closely, I believe that hard work, luck, nepotism and sociopathy all become apparent factors in successful business, with their levels being able to be exchanged to some degree (with some having a greater amount of variability, depending on variation of the others).

In the end: you are right; a bar of gold can fall onto a dead body, but he's no better for it.
