gnunez··on Your Pa$$Word Doesn't Matter
Why are we still forced to use passwords? client certificates stand up to every attack in that table.
gnunez··on A hidden gem in sound symmetry
Is this somehow related or similar to oscilloscope music? https://youtu.be/qnL40CbuodU
gnunez··on /* You Are Not Expected to Understand This */ (2018)
Reminds me of the Kubernetes source code comment.

gnunez··on Cognitive Biases in Software Development
I look at a coding problem and think, what problem did I or somebody else solve in the past that looks similar to this new problem? What’s different about this new problem? What’s the same? In that sense coding is more like reading, in that it is about pattern recognition and “reading the pattern”, then it is about creating something new entirely.
gnunez··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
The MIT Operating Systems opencourseware class labs has some great exercises when learning about operating systems[0]. I've also found older linux kernels, like v1.0, are easier to follow for learning [1].

gnunez··on Ask HN: What occupation or field would you take if money wasn't a concern?
Pure Mathematician.
gnunez··on Google asks Supreme Court to overrule disastrous ruling on API copyrights
I would think Oracle's stance on this issue would be deemed anti-competitive by the courts as were similar rulings in the past. What google did is exactly what AMD did with Intel's instruction set -- duplicated the api. What can of worms would this open up if suddenly you couldn't run your x86 mission critical programs on your AMD servers because of some insane copyright violation ruling? I really hope this decision gets overturned by the supreme court -- as it should.
gnunez··on How and why I transitioned to Linux, and how you can too
I prefer to use macOS as my main desktop environment; where I can easily drop into a bash shell if the need arises. Mac also gives me access to standard iOS development tools. I keep Linux vms running for server-side development and experimenting. Sometimes I wish I also had a Windows machine so I can stay abreast of the .Net ecosystem, but nowadays I don’t really have the need. Each environment/OS is a tool with its own strengths and weaknesses. Don’t limit yourself to just one environment. Learn how to secure yourself in each environment. Use Tor, encryption and other tools to stay as safe and secure as possible. Your privacy can be invaded on Linux, Windows, or any other OS, so unfurtanely the burden of keep your system and date secure still remains.
gnunez··on Ask HN: Why are so many coding challenges about math?
1. Because computer science is about mathematics (combinatorics, permutations, counting, etc) and sometimes interviewers want to make sure that the candidate's foundation is solid.

2. As stated in earlier comments, because mathematics is unambiguous making the problem easy to state and easy to verify. Can you take a small piece of mathematics you may not be familiar with, understand it and translate that into working code? That is a core skill of any software developer -- not necessarily with just mathematics but you get the point.

gnunez··on A convicted felon who became a Georgetown law professor
Could this be white privilege at work again? I mean this guy got 2 cases granted which seems to be quite an accomplishment in the legal world, but don't you think race had little something to do with it The guy interviewing him said, "[he] looked more like a lawyer then a bank robber". Why? Because he's white?
gnunez··on Programming is not math
Programming is not math! Math is Math! Math is a tool used in programming, engineering, economics, etc. To reduce a subject to a tool used in the subject is reductionist to the extreme and does not acknowledge the richness and complexity of the subject.
gnunez··on Don't major in CS: 5 reasons why
This is exactly what happens when people speak on topics they have little or no knowledge of. Some of the reasons given not to study cs in "reason 0... Formalism of mathematics ... probablity and statistics ... circuit design" are topics taught in CS curiculums along with formal logic, langauge theory, discrete math, etc. Try determining the average runtime complexity of some algorithms without using probability or combinatorial math. Sadly, it seems some of his readers are just as ignorant on CS and will continue to spread this misinformation. One comment questions the validity of software engineering without mentioning the difficulty of the anology lies in the fact that our craft is unlike anything seen before -- as noted by Dijkstra long ago.
