gnu8··on Verilog Ethernet: Work-in-Progress 100BASE-TX PHY
Has anyone ever seen an interface that plugs into the MII port pictured in that article? I had a Sun machine with that connector but I never had an adapter for it. There was also a normal RJ45 jack so I didn’t need one but I was always curious.
gnu8··on Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Wasn’t Steve Gibson trying to tell us that raw sockets were the end of the world more than 20 years ago? Maybe he is finally right.
gnu8··on Smartphones and social media are destroying children’s mental health
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”
gnu8··on Apple I operation manual (1976) [pdf]
All that means is it’s not broken when you get it. The 30 day window is a reasonable interval for the purchaser to have time to check it out.
gnu8··on Bug identified after Alaska Airlines planes bump runway while taking off
I wonder if that is aviation language instead of software language. Permanently repaired like replacing damaged aircraft skin so that no further action is required, as opposed to grinding off the jagged edges and patching the opening, but still requiring a real repair after flying back to a maintenance depot.
gnu8··on Small SaaS banned by Cloudflare after 4 years of being paying customer
There isn’t a practical way to fractionate their revenue or determine what proportion of their profit is derived from your data. This can be proved by the fact that there is no way to make any money with only the data you gave to them separated from the rest of their customers and potential customers. Therefore you are entitled to all of their revenue. Please clean out their shareholders and destroy their business. They deserve this for not cooperating with you. It would be very low cost or low effort to correct their mistake and they are choosing not to because it is easier.
gnu8··on The six dumbest ideas in computer security (2005)
The clown who wrote this thinks the word hacking means cracking. That automatically negates everything he says. I would not take anything in this article seriously.
gnu8··on NYC jails want to ban physical mail, then privatize scanning of digital versions
No one on HN understands reality. The name of the site should be False Consciousness.
gnu8··on “Man on the Street” TikTokers Are a Public Menace
This is only a problem in localities with regressive gun control regulations.
gnu8··on Amazon admits no basis for damages in $1M asset seizure by DOJ?
Have you used BeOS or Netscape lately? Do you recall when Internet Explorer became the dominant web browser and then saw no development for five years? Do you remember when the most widespread malware on the internet was Windows 2000?

Bill Gates is nothing but mindless aggression and wanton destruction. He is Vladimir Putin for your computer. Giving some money away does not erase his misdeeds or change him into a good person. We know his character.

gnu8··on Tesla FSD data is getting worse, according to beta tester self-reports
For the disabled people with money anyway. How are disabled people who live entirely from disability subsidies supposed to buy a Tesla?
gnu8··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
Does it fuck up your brain, or your computer?
gnu8··on Judge finds no rights violations in FBI seizure Beverly Hills safe-deposit boxes
> they co-mingled the contents of all the boxes such that the boxes original contents could not be determined.

This is solid evidence to support the idea that the FBI was simply looting US Vault, since confusing the contents without documenting what came from each box would blow up any evidentiary value of the items seized, and prevent the evidence from being used in any criminal prosecution, or even civil asset forfeiture proceedings against the items themselves.

It is my opinion the FBI was expecting to keep everything they stole and auction it off for a profit.

gnu8··on TSMC to make 4nm chips in Arizona for Apple, AMD, Nvidia
China has been a country for longer than the history of European civilization. They do not subscribe to the view that nothing that happened before 1945 matters the way Americans seem to.
gnu8··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
I would say akin to smoking a cigarette. One time won't hurt you in a measurable way but if your job is refilling toners or dealing with broken laser printers you need some protection.
gnu8··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
In any situation where you can see toner you want to be wearing an N95 mask. Inhale any of it and it is in your lungs forever.

The best thing for cleanup is a 3M electronics vacuum which has a filter that will trap that stuff securely.

gnu8··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
Of course they are stealing things for their own consumption. They are merely choosing to steal a particular thing that is easy to steal and easy to convert to cash, which they can then use to purchase the diverse things they need to survive.
gnu8··on More than you cared to know about PC fans
This led me to wonder why we still need the -12V supply - I know the -5V supply was removed a while ago because it was only needed for ISA slots. According to Wikipedia, -12V is for RS-232 ports and PCI slots, both of which are hardly seen on any current motherboards. It should be safe to use it for fans, but 7.2 watts is not very much power. Looking on Mouser, I see 24VDC fans that consume 1 watt or 18 watts depending on speed, so one could easily overload the -12V bus if they are trying to get a lot of CFM. I don’t see a compelling reason to use 24V fans in a PC.
gnu8··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
It is a uniquely crummy feeling to have your work go unused like that, but you shouldn’t let it discourage you. You reached a level of mastery on this particular thing that few people have, which is evidenced by the fact that no one else in the trading community was able to reach your company’s level of confidence and they decided to wait out the leap second instead.
gnu8··on U.S. FBI director says TikTok poses national security concerns
Tiktok's algorithms should be easily jammed by clicking on the wrong things, but at that point why bother using it at all? I've never tried it.
gnu8··on Americans to Provide Biometrics and Pay Fee Traveling to the U.K. From 2023
How is it considered secure or appropriate to mail one's passport to unknown parties to do who-knows-what with it?
gnu8··on Wells are running dry in Southwest as foreign-owned farms feed cattle overseas
Leading me to ask, was the land not offered to the UK or were they not interested?
gnu8··on Twitter to employees today: 'If in office or on your way, please return home'
> If your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email.

What about people who don’t have a personal email address?

gnu8··on Linux boot partitions and how to set them up
It doesn't matter which end of the egg.
gnu8··on The Surreal Horror of PAM (2021)
That’s a good take though. I still hang on to the fantasy of having my mail delivered to my machine like it was big iron, but in the 25 years I have been using Linux it hasn’t happened.
gnu8··on The Surreal Horror of PAM (2021)
> rarely used in most installs.

I was going to object but you are absolutely right. Most Linux installs are instances of something that are created and destroyed without a human ever touching them. However, I wouldn't go so far as to characterize these features as technical debt. A fully functional Linux system should be able to tell users if they have mail, for instance.

gnu8··on The cult of dd (2017)
When did it become possible to use cat and pipes on block devices? I don’t think this was always the case, or was it?
gnu8··on Sandy Hook Families Seek $2.75T from Alex Jones
Should the amount of wealth someone can hoard be essentially unbounded, allowing them to become impervious to any civil consequences for their actions?
gnu8··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
> When the UI changes randomly at regular frequencies, what can you learn? There is no knowledge to accumulate.

Tech companies have the same level of respect for their users as slaughterhouses do for cattle. We are living in The Jungle, except it’s techbro computer shit instead of meatpacking.

gnu8··on New York changes gun buyback after seller gets $21,000 for 3D-printed parts
He transferred $21,000 of the public funds to his own pocket in an honest and legal transaction. On the whole this strikes me as a virtuous and patriotic thing for him to have done and I can only aspire to be this enterprising in my own business affairs.
