gm678··on Report on an Unidentified Space Station (1982)
Fun read! The diameter estimations reminded me of the Star Trek: TNG episode "Remember Me," which might be this story's spiritual opposite.
gm678··on ReDoS “vulnerabilities” and misaligned incentives
One example of this was a CVE for ReDoS in the `py` support library, which caused failed CI runs and "noise for hundreds of thousands of pytest users" despite being of questionable severity (as original article explains) and not actually used anywhere in the wild.

gm678··on Show HN: Textual Markdown – a Markdown “browser” in the terminal
Somewhat relevant previous discussion: "We should have markdown rendered websites": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33548134

I think a major pro of browsers serving content in a limited markup language (with Gopher being the extreme example) is that a variety of applications can realistically work with rendering them, without having to offload everything to a web browser.

I've been wanting to write a simple markdown renderer so that I can view my notes/todo in a nicer form without having to generate a PDF or open by browser, so I'm very excited to take a look at this codebase later.

gm678··on America’s New Sex Bureaucracy
" So what happens now if a man accuses a woman of "raping" him? I'm guessing that he'd be ignored. "

I do think there is currently a double standard, and I think that misogyny and the view of women as "passive" participants in sex contributes to that. The CDC estimates that 1 in 71 men will be raped in their lifetime, and an analysis by Scientific American found that 79 percent of male victims of rape reported it to police, but unfortunately I cannot find information on how many of those reports led to a trial and potentially a conviction.

I think that while some men are likely ignored, and we definitely have a problem with the way we imagine sexual assault as a society, the relatively high reporting rate suggests that many cases are also taken seriously.

I'm also not really sure what "strategy" you're referring to; a strategy to protect yourself from Title IX complaints? I really think that what rayiner said is all you need to do: "Don't take advantage of marginal situations; don't toe the line. Don't do anything you can't defend later."

Could you show me an example of modern feminists trying to suggest that consent can be withdrawn retroactively? I find your argument that people can now be credibly accused of rape because their partner misjudged their wealth to be unrealistic and in bad faith, and I have not seen any evidence for it.

I cannot find a single source for your claim. Do you have one?
gm678··on California bans private prisons
"Less than 10% of incarcerated people are held in private prisons."

While this is true, that's still 133,000 people. An attempt to make the system more ethical for over 100,000 people makes a significant difference.

gm678··on Google Doesn’t Want Staff Debating Politics at Work Anymore
While I absolutely agree that there are people of all political beliefs who have major problems with remaining civil, I think we sometimes have an unfair standard. If someone is dealing with people who just want to spread hate and have no interest in having an open-minded discussion or ever changing their views, and that person then betrays even a hint of frustration, they are often immediately slammed for becoming impolite and uncivil. (Note: I'm not saying there's no line here, just that I believe the line is sometimes drawn in the wrong place).

However, the person being toxic is often not criticized at all because they were spreading their hateful views "politely," if such a thing is possible. So while I believe there is nothing to be gained from getting angry in a political discussion, I do think we should give people a bit of a break if they understandably become frustrated when dealing with actual white nationalists/neo-Nazis/incels saying rape should be legal/etc.
