gluxon··on The Free JavaScript campaign
Why can't some people understand that authors want claim over their creations? Is this really a bad thing? Not everyone writes code for the "good of mankind", and we shouldn't be forcing people to. The quality of software will just go down then.

Besides, JavaScript code is open source. The reason I push for open source is so that others can get a learning experience by looking at ideas in existing code. This campaign is being really picky. Especially since it goes into detail about "where" the code is ran. I'm sure a campaign about "freeing" servers because they generate HTML would sound a lot more ridiculous.

gluxon··on JsPDF - HTML5 PDF generator
It's funny to see Firefox turn this back into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with PDF.js...
gluxon··on [dead]
The title should probably be renamed to something more indicative that this is a GitHub services IP address change.
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
It's as B-Com said. The window manager. I used to use Emerald. There was no way you could consistently draw in the titlebar across all the themes available for it.
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
Perhaps because you have an excessive amount open?
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
It's not a GTK issue.
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
Previously, the titlebar would be shown if you enabled the menubar.
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
The window titlebar doesn't make sense in every application. In this case, the title is already displayed on the tab. Showing it in two areas that are very close to each other is just redundant.

On Windows Vista, 7, and 8, explorer does not have a titlebar since the location breadcrumb trail makes more sense. On OS X, iTunes and the App Store also do not have titlebars, favoring other ways to show information that makes more sense in the context of the app.

gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
Firefox 4-20 hasn't had any toolbar button changes. You really can't count third-party addons as something that Mozilla changes to the toolbar.
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
Yeah, check if you have the firefox-globalmenu apt package installed. If so, check for "Global Menu Integration" in extensions.
gluxon··on Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
The Australis inactive tabs don't overlay. Take a look at the mockups. Only the active tab has a background and border styling.
gluxon··on The GNOME developers removed it.
I'm a fan of Ubuntu Unity and compiz, but everyone is going to yell at me. :(
gluxon··on The GNOME developers removed it.
I thought this was interesting and very similar to the situation that's happening here.

gluxon··on Executable Archaeology: The Case Of The Stupid Thing Eating All My RAM
To the author: Saw this on comex's Twitter and got a good kick out of it. My first surprise was that HN didn't already have this submitted. My second was it reaching first page in 3 hours.

:)

gluxon··on Another user/developer banned from GNOME's bugzilla without any warning
It happens everywhere. OSS just gives you the chance to see all this in the public. It also gives end-users a way to directly communicate their pain and annoyances to developers.
gluxon··on A bill in Congress legalizes cell phone unlocking and fixes the DMCA
This is very dangerous. Just from the first paragraph of the page, it is stated that the bill will allow all types of software modification.

A bill like this will have a very hard time passing. This was originally suppose to be only about unlocking cell phones for use with other carriers. Now conditions have been added that make the bill very arguable. It is asking for more than we can take. Companies like Apple and Sony will be very likely against this.

Every part of me wants this to pass, but this bill is sadly unlikely to. ... sadface

gluxon··on Are video codecs written in JavaScript really the future?
With JIT compilation, asm.js, tracing, it is hard to argue against. A long fought browser war really brought out the maximum capabilities of the JavaScript engine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaScript_engine#Performance_e...

asm.js promises speed 2x slower than native code. For interpreted code, that is amazing.

gluxon··on Are video codecs written in JavaScript really the future?
The power in this is that JavaScript is extensively portable and very consistent across platforms. There are no issues with cross platform support that plagues C++ and to an extent, Java's JVM. There's no possibility of platform lock-in, which happens for .NET applications.

I don't like how this article is written at all. It leaves a bias afterlook that Mozilla's goal here is to create a toy. JavaScript is the fastest interpreted language and plans are out to make it even speedier. There's a reason why "the future" is emphasized.

Perhaps I am biased as a Node.js programmer, but I do believe this is a good thing. JavaScript is seriously pretty sweet. I do like the design of the language. There are features that outblow many other languages.

gluxon··on Chunk Host Offering Free Hosting
I can't even sign up. Just get "Facebook returned an error" and shuts me off.
gluxon··on Webcam Pulse Detector
What in the world? Is this magic?
gluxon··on An Open Letter To Mozilla Corporation
I fail to understand how blocking cookies on websites you have never visited before is harmful to "innovation", "education", "entertainment", "entrepreneurship", and "millions of consumers". Cookies exist as a mechanism for websites to store data. They're used to keep you logged into your Facebook, Google, Twitter accounts. They've have gotten bad reputation over the years due to the ability for arbitrary websites to set them as tracking information. Mozilla's decision here helps retain the original purpose of cookies. Sites you have never visited before have no business leaving session data on your computer. It is just illogical.

Additionally, blocking arbitrary cookies doesn't hinder advertising at all. Nothing in iab's entire letter even made the slightest bit of sense. The entire thing is filled with awkward phrases and confusing reasons that don't tie together. It wouldn't be a stretch to say the entire thing is written to confuse the reader. I'm disappointing this is on the front page. :(

gluxon··on Python 2.7.4 Released
It annoys me how this release was added to the 2.7.x line when it probably should have been 2.8 given all the changes and feature additions. Freezing the 2.x line means not making huge changes to it. Otherwise, it probably shouldn't have been frozen.
gluxon··on HTML5 Sandbox - a bad idea
Hey. I like JavaScript. It makes Node.js work.
gluxon··on Mozilla and Samsung Collaborate on Next Generation Web Browser Engine
Yes, the UI is using web technologies, but core components are not. I would steer far away from writing a JavaScript interpreter in JavaScript... no.
gluxon··on Opera will use Blink
Chrome for iOS will be forced to use WebKit as its rendering engine due to Apple's strict policies.
gluxon··on Desktop notifications in Firefox nightlies
Windows 7 and below doesn't have notifications.
gluxon··on Why I'm switching back to Firefox
Do you really think capping memory usage comes without costs?
gluxon··on Why I'm switching back to Firefox
That's always bothered me. Firefox's fonts are so crisp and clear. Chrome's look faded for some reason.
gluxon··on Why I'm switching back to Firefox
Who's making big bucks off Mozilla then? No employee or Mozilla higher-up is making more than average. On the other hand, I can name tons of Google, Microsoft, and Apple guys making billions.
gluxon··on Why I'm switching back to Firefox
Firefox and Chrome both do this. It is part of the memory caching, which many people disable without knowing the consequences. There were many news articles back around Chrome's release that advised "speed-ups" by disabling cache to free up memory.

And the speed people refer to is JavaScript execution. There is no doubt that V8 was much faster than competitors a few years back.
