glsdfgkjsklfj··on Tesla Recalls Cars with EMMC Failures, Calls Part a ‘Wear Item’
that is absolutely not correct!

very few countries had effective social isolation, most like the US were having both the economic and health negative side effects of closing and not closing because leadership was disagreeing on everything. For example, some cities had curfews and closed restaurants, but open airports and counted every business that was not a restaurant as "essential".

But the few countries that did things correctly, like NZ, did have a much better outcome with close to ZERO deaths.

here's the "source" (source mentioned on the MC pressrelesed which is the source of the article) of which "cryptocurrencies" they are considering https://www.statista.com/chart/18345/crypto-currency-adoptio...

notice how they clump "cryptocurrency" with "digital currencies" as the same thing.

oh let's not forget how they dealt with engineers calling out problems before they actually happened too:

well, i am just going to link to a search because i learned now there were SEVERAL of them https://www.google.com/search?q=tesla+whistleblower

...Also, while we are not-forgetting... TSLA CEO defended trump calling the country to reopen in the middle of the pandemic, just like other CEOs that sell pillows or something. Funny how we only keep one of them accountable.

Not even that. they will likely implement their own private-ledger-per-country system. The press release mention only one market that is currently trading via informal SMS and WAP bank apps with little access to actual money, so why not remove the money entirely?

> by providing liquidity, which has the side effect of causing bad things because it lets the rich accumulate wealth.

curious, what if the people driving that engine opted for wealth tax instead? Wouldn't that be a win-win and your phrase could have been instead:

> by providing liquidity, with no side effect such as causing bad things because it lets the rich accumulate wealth.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

glsdfgkjsklfj··on Leaving Mozilla
> the constant stream of negative comments from unhappy and rude users during the work week and outside of it was extremely draining

This is because mozilla is an open source aberration. The actual developers are super humans, but they are being led by people with the wrong incentives. This is what cause "rude emails from users". the opposite would have gotten you a nice balance of polite and rude patches/reports from contributors.

Open source organizations should focus on fostering the community and educating users. Not trying to champion new versions and rewrites themselves.

Mozilla at first focused on selling the default search spot (and spent that money on exec salary and moonshot projects not related to the browser at all). Now they are focusing on getting mobile users in order to sell their attached products.

When you pay for developers, and make your projects even more closed, you call that on yourself. You are now a company competing on the freemium market.

Case in point, i was an early contributor to Gaia (the mozilla phone OS). I could build and change the browser with ease. I would send in detailed bug reports. Now on android, I can barely get a decent build with the google libraries baked in, let alone make meaningful changes. I just hold off updates and hope somebody else do the work for me (for a while f-droid folks did :)

And I will not even get into my worse petty peeve which is the recent android addons non-techcnical-totally-political-whitelist. sigh. or the changes on every revision to the bookmarks. keywords, folders, etc. can't keep my data consistent for a while now :(

But to close in a good note: mozilla is not representative of opensource! it is much better elsewhere. thank you!

"what happens when you have a literally captive audience and the company can do whatever they want in terms of data abuse and features"

If you are employed, you cannot fathom how dependent on linkedin some people are. It is when you are most vulnerable that they get that $5 to see who viewed your profile (I didn't even know they had that feature until some out-of-work friends were talking about it)

glsdfgkjsklfj··on TurboTax Tricked You into Paying to File Your Taxes (2019)
interesting project. It never showed up on my searches. thank you for sharing.

Curious tech choices. Coded in C. Deal with raw column numbers as the paper form instead of meaningful aliases. guess it makes it easier to implement at first from the forms but might make it harder when the form updates/add lines.

uses a special format raw text file as input. this is a pragmatic as it can get i guess.

some bold choices overall. i think i like it.

glsdfgkjsklfj··on Show HN: Screenstab – A tool to turn screenshots into image assets
Here is something completely different: https://github.com/gcb/mk6

you can "write" (or even read) the screen shot in very simple HTML5 (soon markdown) and a CSS file will magically make it kinda-look like windows/gnome/kde/osx/ios/android.

goal is both to have fully accessible "screenshots" in documentation and to ease the authoring for developers. Mostly because i was tired of having a VM with default vm themes just to create screen shots :)
