gloosx··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
You know for thousands of years people are still stepping on rake, the spikey part. And they get hit in their foreheads. The rake is lever by design, but I wouldn't say the problem is the rake.
gloosx··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Nah, I started with vanilla, then jQuery, then finally learned React.

>But consider data modified

This is why we never modify data but create new data. Data must be immutable. Strictly typed. Always in the form it is expected to be. Otherwise - crash immediatelly.

>But later someone introduced

This is why we write integration tests. Introducing anything without tests is only guesswork.

gloosx··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Well, that is really embarrassing for Cloudflare... A recursion in a side-effect via dependencies is a rookie mistake, it's hard to imagine it could slip into production with a proper due process. Maybe they should stop vibe-coding and deploying things to production without any tests or review?
gloosx··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Surely they are not normal JavaScript functions, but at least the syntax itself is not turned into a DSL like we see it in Svelte or Vue. That is the main difference.
gloosx··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
JSX is just a syntax extension to JS, and it's not even required to create a React app.

React "compiler" is in fact a transpiler, which is a very common thing in JS.

>React is full of magic syntax that looks like functions

Full of magic syntax meaning 5 straightforward hooks? Surely they are not true free-form JavaScript, but at least the syntax itself is not turned into a DSL

gloosx··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
React isn’t just "winning by default" It's winning because at the core it's just JavaScript function composition. A component is a function, conditionals are `if (...) { ... } else { ... }`, loops are `map()`. JSX is just sugar for function calls.

In Svelte you are writing XML with little JavaScript islands inside it. Instead of if you get `{#if}{:else}{/if}`. Thats not "ergonomic" – thats a mini-language stapled on top of JS. No one wakes up saying "please let me write control flow in XML today"

The compiler tricks are neat, but React feels natural because it never asks you to stop writing JavaScript.

gloosx··on Microsoft to force install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app in October
A man climbs the mountain to seek wisdom from the old sage. He bows and says:

-- In October, Microsoft will force Microsoft 365 Copilot upon us all.

The sage furrows his brow, strokes his beard, and replies:

-- Tell me then... what the hell is Microsoft 365? A calendar?

gloosx··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
That would indeed be pointless because I was originally replying to a single UI interaction, where it doesn't really make a huge impact whether it happened in 2 or 5 frames.

You're trying to bring in continuous changing of frames here which is obviously perceived differently.

gloosx··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
I would say when working with synths, the difference between 15ms and 2ms is just swing, it is noticeable but it doesn't feel wrong, just makes things more interesting.

When a drummer plays drums all the hits are off-timing 10-40ms, and it is still considered natural-sounding swing, if it is agonisingly noticeable for you – you have a quite robotic sense of rhythm, it's very subjective after all.

gloosx··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
Well, most of this sub 150ms lag everywhere in the interfaces is actually artificially designed, and believe it or not, some people do prefer it like this, so it's being designed like this. I'm personally for making everything as fast as it would be, but for most people it really doesn't matter.
gloosx··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
The context was about UI interactions, not at all about movie clip which is a totally different thing.
gloosx··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
Yeah of course it is different. My wording was not really correct here – I was rather meaning "irrelevant" in context of a user interface
gloosx··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
20ms is faster than a fly reaction time, it's about the same time which 60HZ monitor takes to refresh the frame, 10 times faster than a typical human's reaction.

Everything under 150 ms is pretty much indistinguishably fast to a normal person.

Did you ask Microsoft permission to use logo/branding etc. Or are you ready to be sued?

It's probably just a coincidence vibe-bros... :P

>if they all stopped training today they'd be swimming in cash in a couple years.

If they stopped training, then the data cutoff date is one year farther each year? How do you make money from model which is stale on data and doesn't include any recent stuff?

gloosx··on We're Joining OpenAI
Expensive part is providing the services at loss to get the biggest part of the market, which is the current state of affairs. At some point the market leader will emerge and it will price things according to the actual cost of running this thing + markup, and ALL efforts would be going into squeezing as much profit as possible from the leading position. At the same time usability and quality would not be priority anymore. We are enjoying the late-capitalism at it's peak here.
gloosx··on We're Joining OpenAI
For sure. Needs to drain as much money as possible from Microsoft first. I approve!

>Anthropic has had the most reasonable business model

Is this a joke? Anthropic burned $5.6 billion in 2024 and is expected to lose about $3 billion this year and it's reasonable business model?

gloosx··on Updates to Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy
There is nothing surprising at all? It's not rocket science to understand that Anthropic is a very greedy company – just by analysing their sales funnel/UX you can tell that money is all they ever care about. Their marketing teams will go for any tricks to gain direct access to your pockets.

In the LLM space no other company is different – they are highly unprofitable – so once funding starts to run dry they will have the pressure to invent new ways for going even deeper into your pockets.

Who told you LLMs will get significantly better with this data? Sam Altman?

gloosx··on Areal, Are.na's new typeface
I think it was intentional. Or maybe accidental, but it makes it even funnier.
gloosx··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
It would not be faster without some kind of a tradeoff, so it does use way more RAM.

>Slack is the best of a bunch of trash options. That doesn't make it good

Well, that's a valid framework too, but by the practical standard of goodness – the best of trash is actually good — because you don't judge goodness against some abstract ideals, but against available choices. Both are valid frameworks, but only one is useful in practice.

gloosx··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
Never heard anyone complaining either./
