glennpratt··on FDA advisory panel recommends Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine be authorized for children
By your numbers, which I haven't checked, COVID-19 killed more children than the flu, which we vaccinate for?

Ignoring the fact that one reason we vaccinate is to reduce spread, like our kids grandparents and great-grandparents.

glennpratt··on Michelin Airless
I was regularly getting flats with a new to me road bike.

I switched to Continental Grand Prix 4 Season and haven't had a flat in 2 years in Portland, OR (though my frequency is down with the pandemic).

glennpratt··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained (2020)
Google's Android backups claim end to end encryption.

> By design, this means that no one (including Google) can access a user's backed-up application data without specifically knowing their passcode.

glennpratt··on $28.50 Beer at LaGuardia Sparks Audit of New York Airport Concession Prices
That's not an accident.

> Our promise to “street pricing” means things cost the same here as in town.

glennpratt··on Regarding Michael Pollan’s New Book This Is Your Mind on Plants
I think I listened to the podcast in question biking last week.

https://armchairexpertpod.com/pods/michael-pollan

For what it's worth, I came away with a completely positive view of Harper's, though maybe I didn't pick up on every word of it.

glennpratt··on Efficiency eludes the construction industry (2017)
I think society does a poor job communicating the actual lack of safety that comes from sedentary, physically repetitive jobs.

I wouldn't qualify for workers compensation for my herniated disc because I don't know when it started or why. But it's probably from sitting in front of a computer. Asking coworkers over 35, they almost all have injuries from computer work.

Maintaining weight and strength while a huge chunk of your day is sedentary is a big chore too.

glennpratt··on Mozilla rolls out DoH to Canadian users of Firefox
Any device you didn't have root on was free work around your DNS server already. This is weak security at best.

DHCP will catch up too. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-peterson-doh-dhc...

glennpratt··on Mozilla rolls out DoH to Canadian users of Firefox
Sounds like eSNI is a good move if China is blocking it.
glennpratt··on Compiling Rust is NP-hard
I worked on a Rust project at work for several months. Compile times were not a significant issues for developers where it was generally cached. For example, repeatedly running a test only compiled a small amount of code.

It was a bit slow in CI/CD build environments with no cache, but so are the k8s Go projects I work on (go mod pulling in the world).

The only thing approaching 2 hours I've ever seen is building the compiler from scratch.

glennpratt··on Stripe Tax
As someone opposed to sales taxes, I'd rather the federal government stay out of it.
glennpratt··on 3,000 eggs abandoned after drone scares birds in California
Anecdata:

~ I've been bitten in the hand drawing blood by two different dogs (not mine). ~ My daughter had a large dog nipping her face while the owner laughed. ~ I have too different acquaintances that were mauled on their face pretty badly.

All these dogs had owners nearby.

I love dogs and have had one or more the majority of my life, but people are irresponsible and arrogant.

glennpratt··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
I only think I have very occasional allergies by observing my health during the pandemic. I have no clue what it's from. I just assumed they were colds before, though I certainly had less illness of any kind this last year.
glennpratt··on Embrace the Grind
Ahh, the infuriation of seeing the issue you worked hard to document, closed by summarily by somebody that didn't even try to understand.

And of course that person didn't close their pet project or the features they promised.

It's slightly soothed when it's realized one of your summarily closed bugs could have prevented the next incident or major customer loss.

glennpratt··on How did Microsoft make Flight Simulator seem so real?
And a high end GPU you can't buy.

(stuck with my RX 580, FS2020 is ok on my monitor, but the VR unplayable).

glennpratt··on Zero click vulnerability in Apple’s macOS Mail
Yes, decryption requires the original device's unlock PIN/pattern/password:

https://security.googleblog.com/2018/10/google-and-android-h...

Not that I fully understand how hard it is to circumvent.

glennpratt··on Android's new Bluetooth stack rewrite (Gabeldorsh) is written with Rust
Anecdotal, but my new 16 inch MBP drops BT connections all the time. I had to give up the keyboard and mouse I've used for years across at least 5 computers, mostly Mac's because they disconnected so much. Even the Apple keyboard and mouse I switched to drop occasionally.
glennpratt··on U.S. senators reintroduce bill to make daylight saving time permanent
Still, I'll take all DST over switching twice a year.
glennpratt··on JSON with Commas and Comments
Just use YAML. JSON is valid YAML.
glennpratt··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
That will also hurt games. It's a huge differentiator between integrated GPUs and dedicated.
glennpratt··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
And crypto demand can evaporate tomorrow, as it has in the past and leave those plants unprofitable.
glennpratt··on The YouTube ban is un-American, wrong, and will backfire
Black people and women are humans with equal rights. I believe this is basic humanist morality, but also they are a protected class before the law that can't be discriminated against in many cases. A false video is just a false video. Being a liar is not a protected class.

Why not nationalize YouTube is irrelevant to the conversation, but the end result would be the same. The government would then be providing a self publishing platform.

glennpratt··on The YouTube ban is un-American, wrong, and will backfire
I believe the US has gotten more toxic recently, in part because more and more liars and charlatans have technology enabled bullhorns. They flood feeds with garbage content that takes sober headed folks too long to wade through. It's not all political, but this is happening on the left and the right.

In other words, no, what you claim doesn't seem axiomatic at all.

glennpratt··on The YouTube ban is un-American, wrong, and will backfire
No, that would be the basis for the US to stand up its own video publishing platform. Forcing YouTube to host content it doesn't wish to is "un-American".
glennpratt··on Information overload helps fake news spread
> I won't mention names because I'll only be downvoted

Unfortunately, I don't know you or trust you, so this post seems like more noise.

glennpratt··on RIP Google Music
Right, you have to find your actual upload, not the video. They are different, the video is NOT your upload.

I agree this is a bit confusing, but I hadn't really struggled with it since I play my uploaded music from albums and playlists, not search.

glennpratt··on RIP Google Music
Perhaps it's actually a music video of a song you uploaded? Try browsing to the song in question through Library -> Uploads.

I don't have a subscription either and double checked I can play my uploads with the screen off.

glennpratt··on RIP Google Music
> the app doesn't let you play music with your screen off

It does, but without a subscription, only music you uploaded or purchased.

glennpratt··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
> If you have an existing free unlimited plan they should grandfather that in.

They do. Photos uploaded before the change next year do not count.

glennpratt··on Why are so many unprofitable companies the best performing stocks this year?
I scratched my head too, but I forgot about this detail.

> Russ Hanneman is a multi-billionaire who claims to have "put radio on the internet".

glennpratt··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
> H1B has been/is being abused by all companies (big and small)

I don't see this exactly.

I have worked with multiple, brilliant visa holders. Many of them have moved on to bigger and better things. Presumably paying a huge amount in taxes for the privilege.

Most software developers I know are not making what I would deem suppressed wages, especially in the current conditions (and I don't have an SV job). Most firms I know would hire more people, but instead are contracting with firms and individuals outside of the US.

I suspect that's going to ramp up more.
