glenndebacker··on Super Mario Bros. Commodore 64 Fan Port Hit with DMCA
I hear that a lot but it's certainly not that black and white.

* Capcom for example allows fan games as long as you don't profit off them. There are a couple of Megaman games for example.

* Konami allowed the fan game "Castlevania: The Lecarde Chronicles 2" as long as they did not profit from the game.

* Valve allowed the HL fan game Prospect - https://store.steampowered.com/app/399120/Prospekt/

And there are other examples out there. Nintendo could perfectly allow it under certain conditions. Did Sega not work for Sonic Mania with somebody who made sonic fan games for example?

glenndebacker··on European Parliament approves copyright reform
One of those organisations is the Belgian Sabam and are really crooks. In the past they were sued for fraud, bribing, tampering with the books...

They are notorious for asking licenses for everything music related even if the artist does not exists.

A Belgian satirical program created a concert with the artists Kenwood (mixer), Suzy Wan (jar of Chinese food) , Mister cocktail and the party mix (pack of nuts) and they still managed to send a bill of a couple of hundred euros for these artists they represented...

glenndebacker··on Google is reportedly shutting down its in-house VR film studio
Personally I see more in Augmented Reality than Virtual Reality, certainly regarding applications.

It's also not that commercial interesting that a big percentage of people gets sick of VR. We stopped demoing because of this. AR seems to have less of those problems from empirical experience. I can use a Hololens for hours without feeling anything while with an oculus rift I get queasy after a couple of minutes.

The only thing that I'm still waiting for is project northstar (http://blog.leapmotion.com/northstar/) so the devices becomes cheaper. The high price seems to hamper the adoption a lot.

glenndebacker··on Honda Plans to Leave Britain as Brexit Draws Close
There is only one Honda plant in the EU. Also because of the new trade deal between the EU and Japan it’s possible cheaper for them to export from Japan than a UK because of the brexit (regardless if there is a deal)
glenndebacker··on Google Takes Down Artstation Android App for Explicit Content
As a Flemish/Belgian museum try to post some historical Flemish Baroque paintings or statues on Facebook or a Google platform... For our clients that is a real problem.

The irony is that you will a lot of those "explicit content" hanging or being displayed in Catholic Churches all over Europe so it has nothing to do with religion but only extreme (American) puritanism.

glenndebacker··on Facebook Is Letting Job Advertisers Target Only Men
I can't speak for the UK but in Belgium it's certainly illegal to discriminate based on gender, age, race, ....

There was even a case recently where a man won a lawsuit because he was excluded by a clothing store that was searching for a female employee for doing an inventory job.

"Brussels, 23 August 2018 - The legal action taken by the Institute for Equality of Women and Men reminds employers that sex is not a criterion for refusing an application. The Leuven Labor Court has sentenced a clothing store to discrimination based on sex. He refused a man's candidacy because he wanted to hire a woman."

https://presscenter.org/nl/pressrelease/20180822/een-sollici... (dutch) https://presscenter.org/nl/pressrelease/20180822/een-sollici... (french)

That being said I also seen adverts asking for women but technically it's against the law and even with all those laws discriminations happen more often than not.

glenndebacker··on EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019
I know that here in Belgium the decision will also keep the choices of our neighbouring countries in mind and likely involve talks with them. I do think this will eventually will be the case for a lot of countries.

I find it also kind of ironic because when Europe does not give countries the individual choice people complain about how it forces its will. And now countries have that choice it’s also not good.

glenndebacker··on Macron Push to Drop CIA Code Quickens as Trump Calls EU Foe
Not being disrespectful but the country that is a lot against unification or more EU collaboration is leaving in March next year.

So while I'm not particular pro-brexit but I do think this could have also a positive impact to the EU in regards of more unification or more EU collaborations.

glenndebacker··on Go 1.11 Beta 2 is Released
Can we use XML with multiple namespaces now? I find it weird that 3 years later working with xml namespaces is still troublesome - https://github.com/golang/go/issues/13400#issuecomment-16245...
glenndebacker··on European Commission fines Google €4.34B in Android antitrust case
"Sure, Android is dominating the European markets, but I find it to be a good thing. I am surprised that the EU commission never investigated Apple."

You are answering your own question. The problem is that Apple is not under investigation because it has 15% a 20% marketshare and so it's impact is regarded as rather small and not seen as a monopoly.

When you have a big share of the pie there are other rules that apply and personally I'm fine with that. When you have 80% of the market it can't be all fun and play.

glenndebacker··on China Begins Production Of x86 Processors Based On AMD's IP
I don't know how you are modded down because the irony is that the whole situation is historical speaking very hypocritical.

Was it not for Samuel Slater that "stole" British inventions without regards for patents and improved further on them, he would not be regarded as "the father of the American Industrial Revolution".

glenndebacker··on China Begins Production Of x86 Processors Based On AMD's IP
"People hoped that China would open up while modernising, so far it has not worked at all."

The same can be said of the US these days. It seems to go backwards for some strange reason.

glenndebacker··on China Begins Production Of x86 Processors Based On AMD's IP
"Both are bad but US does not seem to steal technology through hacking like China does. I am not sure why"

Maybe not through hacking but historical a lot of the industrial revolution that happened in the US was by means of "stealing" British technology, improving on it and don't have any regards for their patents at that time.

There is really some irony somewhere in there.

glenndebacker··on China Begins Production Of x86 Processors Based On AMD's IP
"US does not seem to steal for economic purposes at all."

Sorry but they use their intelligence for economic reasons e.g. Airbus contracts. And Snowden leaks also revealed that spying is not only limited to security or political targets...

And to be honest with the current American President who is "hugely" (so yuge you could not believe it) untrustworthy and is certainly not a friend of the other western countries, I can't honestly say that it's very difficult anno 2018 to determine who you can trust.

glenndebacker··on Nvidia Appears To Have A GPU Inventory Problem
I looked it up I paid 351,90 euro for my 1070 last year now that same card is 500 euro's... I remember you could pick up a 1080 for 560 euro at that time.

So sorry but no the prices aren't back to normal.

glenndebacker··on Show HN: Dilay – A free 3D sculpting application
I love blender but its sculpting does not even come close for me as to Sculptris/3D coat for me personally.

I really like Dilay because it certainly gives me the closest Sculptris experience and that also on Linux/Mac which is an added bonus!

glenndebacker··on GDPR: Programmatic ad buying plummets in Europe
"Also with targeted ads you don't have to hear/read about products you will never care for a moment in your life."

When I'm researching for product of a certain kind, I often get advertisements for months after I bought such a device. I still get ads for a 3D printer that I bought 3 months ago, I stopped caring then and find it frankly annoying.

It has been more then 10 years now but I've worked a couple of years in e-commerce when Google Analytics was still Urchin and ad-sense was not a big thing. You know how we needed to drive sales traffic to our sites ? By providing good and informative content and that sometimes being the smaller shop.

glenndebacker··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
That is because you are too focused on doing it "right". That was something that I also had problems with in the beginning.

Anxiety went away from the moment that I've read and accepted that there is no right or bad way to being mindful or meditate. Also not being negative against bad feelings that could arise when practicing and just observe was a big step for me and made it easier to make it go away or make it less powerfull.

glenndebacker··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
I have PTSD and practice mindfulness/buddhism and while it doesn't cure it, it certainly does help a lot. You can only act and change the circumstances when you have some new insights and there is where mindfulness/buddhism helps me. It is certainly not the case of I'm meditating and miraculously all my problems go away...

Personally I don't think that mindfulness/medition/... is overhyped but the tools/apps/courses are. There is really no need to spends hunderds of euro's to being mindfull or learn the practices.

glenndebacker··on The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality
Maybe they can crowdfund ? If I read the news and see the prices to get "insights", it may be doable.

Then again I find it troubling how easy politicians are getting bought these days while in essence it's not that hard to govern with all the people in mind instead of them self. But I may be very naive in this regards.

glenndebacker··on Chinese tech giant ZTE ceases operations after ban on using U.S. components
Kinda ironic that "terrorism" is so a big deal regarding Iran when there is no problem the impact a country like Saudi Arabia has. I'm not going to beat that dead horse that a lot of 9/11 terrorist were SA. But if you would follow the money of most European Mosques where they preach extremism (and produce terrorists) you will see the money seems to come from one country and here is a hint...it's not Iran. And that is still going one today.

Then again according to Trump Iran also is a big supporter of Al Qaeda where it doesn't make any ideological sense (shia versus...) only if you take the all the muslims/brown people are the same approach.

Don't get me wrong Iran don't have nice leaders but this whole situation really stinks and does nothing to improve the security of us all.

glenndebacker··on Chinese tech giant ZTE ceases operations after ban on using U.S. components
Seems to be only for Chinese companies then... https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-iran-business-t...

You really must be extremely naive to think that this has pure to do with not following the rules after all the different arguments Americans/British have produced why companies like Huwaei/ZTE/... (because America is so trustworthy) are bad. I have the feeling that they just found a stick to beat the dog.

glenndebacker··on China Slaps Tariffs on U.S. Products
I'm not an economist or an American but from my POV I find the first round of sanctions seems to be very interesting (and may I say) well thought. In this round focusing on agricultural products seems to hit those voters - where I assume - that are mostly Trump voters. I find this very ironic to say the least.

Reminds me of the more strategical thinking of possible EU sanctions targeting products that are important for certain high profile republicans and their states.

glenndebacker··on Assassin's Creed Origins is crippling gamers' CPUs due to anti-piracy DRM
It's mostly the paying customer who ends up with the burden. I would really like to know the train of thought behind it because for me that is just plain weird.

It's the same when you buy a movie or a television show on DVD/BR. You first get the traditional FBI warnings (that as a non US citizen doesn't apply to me) and if you are lucky you get a 3 minute unskippable scenes about how piracy is the equivalent of murdering a thousand puppies.

Somebody who pirates never see these things and have a better viewing experience.

glenndebacker··on Airbus buys majority stake in Bombardier CSeries passenger jet business
Not if you also allow other countries for looking out for their own best interests.

And that is a big problem (among a boatload of others) with the current American administration. It is not America First but America only. That with no consideration for their "allies" or applying a different set of standards to others...

glenndebacker··on Apple does right by users and advertisers are displeased
If we could only harvest that negative spin, we would certainly have a working perpetuum mobile in no time.

What is wrong with positioning yourself as a device maker that guarantees privacy and security ? In the end it's a choice that they need to make and while it's definitely business driven, I don't see what they could possible do to make it less "shameful"?

There is a market for it and it's certainly something that I personally find very valuable. I don't like to be a "product" and rather pay a premium, although my iPhone SE is not that more expensive than a Pixel device for example.

glenndebacker··on HTC looks at option to sell or demerge Vive
It doesn't help if a lot of people get nauseous trying it... That seems a bigger hurdle then the price or investors. It's even worse then with the 3D-movie fad where people only complained about headaches.

I've had the Oculus Rift for some time but in the end I sold it. At the current stage with the problems the platforms still have I honestly don't see it as worth investing my time in it. If I would place a bet short-term it wouldn't be on VR but rather AR.

Then again there are certainly niche's where it has his place but as a general usage device? Nah.

glenndebacker··on The U.S. is risking an academic brain drain
Yeah seeing the refugee crisis, the uprising of ISIS, terrorist attacks that are indirectly related to a lot of American invasions we Europeans are getting definitely the long end of the stick.

I find it really weird how over the ocean they are always pounding the self on the chest but they never think about how some of us need to deal with the consequences of the decisions they made in the past. You can bicker a whole day of keeping people out and travel bans but you need to ask yourself what is one of the reasons we have them in the first place.

Military spending is also not about the bill but funding the American military complex by forcing shoddy products (JSF) to other countries. I know this is the reason why this country is still debating about replacing our old F16 fleet.

America is not perfect in that regards that they only brings safety to the world or they do everything because they have high moral values.

glenndebacker··on GIMP 2.9.6 Released
Hope you understand that some of use need non destructive editing...
glenndebacker··on Judge orders tech company to release Web user data from anti-Trump website
So what are you saying that until the Internet it was virtual (no pun) impossible to investigate crimes?

Maybe they can do like the rest of the world investigate rioters (that commits crimes) by analyzing camera footage? I find it hard to believe that countries - with less possibilities - can do it, but in the US suddenly it's impossible.

I must be careful for Godswin law but in a country where Lügenpresse is also suddenly a thing, I'm very skeptical of the fact that this is needed because its the only way to identify "rioters". It reminds me of certainly historic events where they also needed to identify opponents of X and Y for "crimes".

Btw how the hell are you going to find a couple of individuals in 1.3 million visitor records if that is the only lead?
