glbrew··on Facebook Reveals New Security Settings Amid Privacy Concerns
The real problem is data collected about you from other people. For example all of my lesser friends install the android facebook app which gives them tons of information about me from my interactions with them. I need a way to tell facebook to delete and not collect data about me from other people's devices.

Wow, I never knew that.
glbrew··on A History of Capacity Challenges in Computer Science [pdf]
How sure are you that a university's main goal isn't to make money these days?

Brb, I'm about to run an Ironman at 29.
glbrew··on As Flow of Foreign Students Wanes, U.S. Universities Feel the Sting
Apparently I'm the only one who is happy about this. I went through undergrad/grad school just as the explosion of foreign students occurred. Don't get me wrong, I'm open minded and liberal but I saw class rooms go from a dozen English speaking students with close connections to the professor to rooms stuffed beyond the fire code specifications of 50+ students who I couldn't even communicate with, not to mention the precipitous fall in education quality associated with this transition. Foreign money and skill is nice but I saw top tier programs go to shit to cram in a bunch of high paying mediocre foreign students. Domestic students deserve access to high quality education, and I personally saw major US programs fail at that.

glbrew··on Fundamentals of Linear Algebra and Optimization [pdf]
Is this going to be a textbook? I can't find it in print, but it looks like a great text.

Anyone know what book this is from? Looks like it is Chapter 19?
glbrew··on Citadel's Ken Griffin Says Bitcoin ‘Bubble’ May End in Tears
Well technically you are speculating by paying for the energy to mine the coins. You could take that money and save it as cash/M1 if you didn't want to speculate.
glbrew··on Tesla posts big loss, cuts production of Models X and S to catch up on Model 3
"cuts production"

I don't follow official statements closely but it sounds like they are using this retooling as an excuse for low demand for the S and X. This way they get to have their cake and eat it too: low S/X numbers justified and re-energized promises for increased 3 production.

Great youtube video that presents huge barriers to the hyperloop:

glbrew··on UC Berkeley research fellow Michael Cohen dies at 25
Nice analysis. One shortcoming is you group all deaths together; expected and unexpected deaths. A considerable chunk of 30 year old's may be expected to die, mostly from cancer.
glbrew··on How Did Marriage Become a Mark of Privilege?
You're highly biased because those are the weddings you see. The average wedding cost is a very small fraction of these numbers. I know a number of people who could afford to throw large weddings but just had a ceremony in their backyards instead.
glbrew··on Walmart wants you to let delivery people into your home while you're away
First they laugh at you, then, actually, they keep laughing at you.
glbrew··on Show HN: I'll mail Equifax your arbitration opt-out for free
Nothing worse than what Equifax already did...
glbrew··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
I think this relates to an important concept which is the difference between thinking as an individual and a corporation. If an individual breaks the law (feloniously) or gets sued he probably f'ed up pretty bad. However even your most well managed and proper corporation is probably breaking more laws than you could ever count. When running a company you have to have a different mindset than as a individual when it comes to the law.
glbrew··on 80-year Harvard study has been showing how to live a healthy and happy life
I don't know the nuances of this study but I am curious about the role of personality. I have lived much of my life with large groups of caring family and friends and I was miserable. I have lived parts of my life as relatively isolated and reclusive and was enormously happy. Have any related studies accounted for personality? 5,10,20% of the population might be the exact opposite?

Poor poor vendors who provide safety and reputation protection to addicts who would otherwise be in alleys.
glbrew··on AlphaBay, the Largest Online 'Dark Market,' Shut Down
Exactly! Nation-state actors can find hidden services! TOR was not built for this type of activity. Why aren't more people mentioning this?
glbrew··on Fake Obama speech is the beginning of the end of video evidence
Politicians/business/others will have to cryptographically sign their official audio/video
glbrew··on Fake Obama speech is the beginning of the end of video evidence
Fortunately this will counteract a total lack of privacy caused by ubiquitous microscopic drones and cameras. You come forward with a celebrity/political/ceo sex tape? There is no difference between the "real" tape and thousands of already synthetic ones; no one could know the difference. In other words, this technology will return privacy to everyone by allowing us to all "hide" in plain sight.
glbrew··on Computation in Physical Systems
I don't thing that is what he is referring to. He is talking amount symbols as in computational manipulation of symbols to achieve information processing, not symbols as in a deeper meaning for something.
glbrew··on Tesla Model S and Model 3 comparison
Yeah. This quarter and next quarter are going to have abysmal sales. I think they are desperately trying to make their earnings reports look better to prevent a sell off.
