gkilmain··on Show HN: Three Things Daily – Make gratitude a daily habit
I'm going to give it a go with the old pencil / paper. Hopefully, if it works and then fizzles away, it'll fizzle because i've gained the benefit. Six months tho - might be tough.

I hear what you're saying but ... have you tried it? Seems like a simple enough exercise. Heck, maybe I'll try it.
gkilmain··on Equity guide for employees at fast-growing companies
I'm sure if you think its terrible you could always say you don't want the stock?
gkilmain··on Next.js 10
Have you tried writing a sample project? It took me a few tries to really understand the problem that these framework solve.
gkilmain··on Next.js 10
A solid understanding of React is helpful. Mastery of React completely unnecessary.
gkilmain··on Full-Bleed Layout Using CSS Grid
Awesome - didn't know this was a thing.
gkilmain··on Declarative Shadow DOM
Sounds good.
gkilmain··on Declarative Shadow DOM
I think what they're saying is since the article says this "Shadow DOM provides a way to scope CSS styles to a specific DOM subtree and isolate that subtree from the rest of the document." if we could just make CSS namespace aware maybe we don't need the Shadow DOM after all.

> We have no demonstrable ability to forecast into the distant future!

Well I woke up this morning and got myself a beer!

gkilmain··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
How much time do you spend being a mod / working for free? Genuinely curious.
gkilmain··on Ask HN: Self-taught webdev with lots of free time. What should I learn?
Yes. Native mobile would be a great side project coming from web dev. You'll learn new languages and tools which for me helped me become better web dev.
gkilmain··on DHH: The HEY stack Vanilla Ruby on Rails, MySQL, redis, stimulus, elastic search
> It goes to show that libraries like React, Vue, and Angular are _not_ necessary to build smooth, modern, and fully-featured web interfaces.

I understand what you're saying but want to clarify: Angular is a full blown opinionated framework.

And from my experience in the enterprise which library or framework to use are decided by how productive the dev team can be. Not sure newbs would hit the ground running with the HEY stack.

gkilmain··on Ask HN: How can I pick a side project and stick with it?
I've been working on a side project now for about 8 months. By far the longest for me. Whats worked this time is I don't work on it every day and sometimes I'll only write a few lines of code if only to keep the momentum going. I think anything you do for your side project is a positive step. Once you give up its done.
gkilmain··on Stalin’s Danish Mystery
Interesting. I work with a bunch of older Russians and they say it was very accurate.
gkilmain··on Colorado voters are set to decide if wolves should be reintroduced to the state
Same problem. I could have first hand knowledge of the issue but still vote contrary to it.
gkilmain··on Google offers certificate to help IT career growth
W3Schools battles css-tricks and mdn for first spot on search results for most of my searches (I'm a front end dev). I agree that their certificates are completely worthless but the site isn't as terrible as it used to be.
gkilmain··on So You Think You Want to Open a Brewery (2014)
Have you ever thought that maybe Ipa Bro just wants to get drunk?
gkilmain··on Explanation of the state of uBlock Origin and other blockers for Safari
This is correct. I remember showing friends Chrome after hearing their complaints about how slow IE was. Some had to get over the hurdle of downloading and installing chrome (whereas IE just came with the laptop) but once they used it they never looked back.
gkilmain··on The 1619 Project
I wouldn't have cared as much if I were not a parent - shitty to say but its true - the thought of children tugging on their parents while the parent is being shipped off or sold i mean. My gosh.
gkilmain··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
Your comment reminded me of my time as a mortgage broker back in 2006. Borrowers it seemed knew more about the lax loan products but once things went south people screamed they had no idea.
gkilmain··on Why aren’t more companies remote-first?
Communication is key. Whenever I need direction on a particular problem or opinions on an approach face to face wins (for me) every time.
gkilmain··on Chinese Spies Got the NSA’s Hacking Tools, and Used Them for Attacks
But shouldn't you at least try both? They seem to me to be two very different things.
gkilmain··on You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss (2008)
Is it regarding product or code? Perhaps try changing how you deliver the message. Ultimately if its an issue of your peers not respecting you and therefore tuning out your message well that is almost impossible to overcome.
gkilmain··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
There has been a ton of whining over the years about native vs some JS framework and I'm tired of the shit too. Now I can't speak for your QT but I can for IOS. Do you know how much easier it is to learn swift + xcode vs learning html / css / js in a framework that compiles to native code? The answer is very much.
gkilmain··on Stop Learning Frameworks
I can't fully agree with this. The goal is to get paid. Angular and React pay the bills. Where I am in agreement is not just understanding the framework but understanding how the stack of tools which make up your framework works. Joel (that dude from egghead) wrote about it and it resonated with me. So don't stop learning frameworks, but don't stop at just learning the framework. Learn it from top to bottom.
gkilmain··on Ask HN: How do you manage UI/UX for your side projects?
Bootstrapping a proof of concept, or a very early version of an app, definitely is still very much relevant. Bootstrap aids in this. And I think it is widely accepted that if you have an app that you'll eventually scale it needs to be refactored out. But for that initial POC, bootstrap away!

gkilmain··on The highest paid workers in Silicon Valley are product managers (2016)
Ha, have a newborn and have just recently considered making the move into product.
gkilmain··on Deleting Facebook
I once told my bookie to delete my account. He said he can't remove it from the db but he can try his best to not accept any wagers from the account. I've since wagered 100 + times that conversation. Maybe fb is the same. Maybe they know sooner or later, some how either through curiosity or some stupid link you click on, you'll be back?
gkilmain··on The Mopeds Are Coming
My point is you can't weave in and out of traffic. Stay in your lane like everyone else. Want to use the bike lane ride a bike.
