Yeah? Well, y'know, that's just like, ah, your "opinion" man...

gjvc··on Use protocols, not services
why would you hedge yourself with a double-negative here? It was because of (open) protocols and not services that people could easily decamp and setup afresh.

Interoperability has always been paramount, but gets so easily forgotten.

This fucking consistent "does this deserve a post" whinging and whining and moaning is really off-putting.

gjvc··on snapshot.debian.org
"The snapshot archive is a wayback machine that allows access to old packages based on dates and version numbers. It consists of all past and current packages the Debian archive provides."

For example, when you have been fucked by new versions of an nvidia driver, this is where to look. (535.247.01-1 ftw)

gjvc··on Why didn't AI “join the workforce” in 2025?
the "why not xxxx?" comments really are the height of disrespect, ignoring someone else's effort to instead show how smart they are, while being lazy about it. I bet 9/10 people who make such comments never even look at the original project in any depth, let alone try it out in anger.

Very much agree. Being in the UK I never saw the original broadcasts, but I've enjoyed them on YouTube. (the ability to "time-travel" with YouTube never ceases to amaze me.)

We had a similar pair over here in .uk -- Chris Serle and Ian McNaught-Davis. They had a down-to-earth way of presenting the like of which we will not see again, mainly because of their characters, but also of the context in which they were presenting: as you say seeking to make the public aware about the wave of the future. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Computer_Programme (the theme music of which was Kraftwerk's "Computer World", no less!))
