givan··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
It's a short life indeed, worrying on what decision to make and postponing will only make it worse.

Consider the statistics of decision, in general and simplified. In any abstract decision, there is a 50 percent probability that the correct or constructive choice will be made. If the correct path is taken, obviously no problems will exist. If the incorrect selection is made, it will become evident. When it does, there is a 50 percent probability that the choice can be reversed and the constructive path substituted in its place.

Therefore, there is only one chance in four, at the most, that an irrevocable direction may be taken in decision making. All vital decisions in the history of man have been made on much worse odds than three to one. Some were as high as one in twenty and came out positively.

To move away from the null point of indecision, take the position that any action or decision is better than none at all, based upon the odds of three to one.

givan··on New discovery throws light on mystery of pyramids' construction
But why do we insist to think that the the pyramids were built with such primitive tools?

It's not only the weight of the stone blocks and the distance but also the mathematical precision, the perfectly round holes drilled in some stones, the puzzle shaped carved stones to stand earthquakes and the perfectly chiseled pharaoh stone statues and all the amazing things there that it makes me wonder why do we insist they used chisels and ropes and all that things that we associate with primitives?

Why is so hard to admit that they had some kind of advanced technology that for some reason has been lost?

Is this so scary to admit for a culture that wants to think is the pinnacle of human history? The same thinking that we are the center of the universe type of mentality.

givan··on Microplastics found in 90 percent of table salt
Why add a rock to your food just to enhance taste? Sodium is naturally present in all plants and meat no need for extra intake and besides that huge quantity of sodium that is taken from the salt that is added in every non sweet food messes up your body at cellular level

givan··on Spinoza’s philosophy of freedom
In a letter of October or November, 1674, Spinoza writes:

Thus, I call a thing free that exists and acts out of the pure necessity of its nature; and I call it compelled, if its existence and activity are determined in a precise and fixed manner by something else. Thus God, for example, though necessary, is free, because he exists only out of the necessity of his nature. Similarly, God knows himself and everything else freely, because it follows from the necessity of his nature alone that he should know everything. You see, then, that I locate freedom not in free decision, but in free necessity. Let us, however, descend to created things, which are all determined to exist and to act in fixed and precise ways by outside causes. To see this more clearly, let us imagine a very simple case. A stone, for example, receives a certain momentum from an external cause that comes into contact with it, so that later, when the impact of the external cause has ceased, it necessarily continues to move. This persistence of the stone is compelled, and not necessary, because it had to be established by the impact of an external cause. What applies here to the stone, applies to everything else, no matter how complex and multifaceted; everything is necessarily determined by an outside cause to exist and to act in a fixed and precise manner. Now please assume that the stone, as it moves, thinks and knows that it is trying, as much as it can, to continue in motion. This stone, which is only conscious of its effort and by no means indifferent, will believe that it is quite free and that it continues in its motion not because of an external cause but only because it wills to do so. But this is that human freedom that all claim to possess and that only consists in people being aware of their desires, but not knowing the causes by which they are determined. Thus the child believes that it freely desires the milk; the angry boy, that he freely demands revenge; and the coward flight. Again, drunkards believe it is a free decision to say what, when sober again, they will wish that they had not said, and since this prejudice is inborn in all humans, it is not easy to free oneself from it. For, although experience teaches us sufficiently that people are least able to moderate their desires and that, moved by contradictory passions, they see what is better and do what is worse, yet they still consider themselves free, and this because they desire some things less intensely and because some desires can be easily inhibited through the recollection of something else that is familiar.

Because this view is expressed clearly and definitely, it is easy to discover the fundamental error in it. Just as a stone necessarily carries out a specific movement in response to an impact, human beings are supposed to carry out an action by a similar necessity if impelled to it by any reason. Human beings imagine themselves to be the free originators of their actions only because they are aware of these actions. In so doing, however, they overlook the causes driving them, which they must obey unerringly. The error in this train of thought is easy to find. Spinoza and all who think like him overlook the human capacity to be aware not only of one’s actions, but also of the causes by which one’s actions are guided.

givan··on Is It Time to Give Up on a Single Diagnostic Label for Autism?
Autism skyrocketed, we had 1 in 59 kids in 2014 in the us. https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/data.html

I don't want to even think about the present.

Unfortunately autism cause research is governed by scientific dogma that prevents acknowledgement of the source of such rapid disastrous increase, this shows how scientific progress is controlled by corporations and government through funding and politics.

Just like the church controlled it in the middle ages.

givan··on Renting is Throwing Money Away, Right? (2015)
In the housing market there is a useless but with big influence 3rd party that became so ordinary that nobody questions it anymore.

In eastern europe after comunist regimes fall houses were very cheap and nobody needed a loan to buy one, they could collect the money in just a few years, this has changed after eu banking entered the markets and loaning become something ordinary to buy a house just like in the west this lead to an average of 10x increase in prices.

If banks will be allowed only to loan money to businesses then the supply and demand alone will adjust the housing market to real buying power, this will also lead to more money being pumped into economy instead of keeping artifical economic bubbles.

Walls became the new gold for "investment" banks to keep their money, this mechanism is enforced through artifical goverment scarcity and bank loaning.

givan··on Was there a civilization on Earth before humans?
We don't even know about previous human civilizations.

Recently discovered Göbekli Tepehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6bekli_Tepe, the oldest megalith structure, confirmed by radiocarbon tests to be more than 12.000 years old with massive stone pillars and 3d relief stone sculptures mostly still buried is still a mystery to science and some "scientists" still think hunter-gatherers built it with stone chisels.

The interesting thing is that a study based on the drawings on the structure correlated with Younger Dryas period might explain why nothing was found about the ancient civilization that built it.

givan··on 'I’m not having children because I want to save the planet'
Why people are so short sighted and focus only on the numbers instead of seeing the root cause?

The root cause is how we live and treat our enviorment, our society with it's consumerims uses mostly non regenerable energy sources to produce mountain of useless junk that breaks fast or it's out of fashion, driving big polluting cars and eating lots of meat that leads for deforestation to provide land for the crops that are eaten by billions of animals that are slaughtered every year and many other irational things the modern man is doing to it's planet, it's home.

Reducing the numbers while keeping this insanity going will no help much, it will only slighly delay the inevitable.

givan··on In Raising the World’s I.Q., the Secret’s in the Salt (2006)
Salt as far as I know is the only mineral (non plant) spice we use, it's only purpose is to enhance taste.

There is a common confusion between salt (sodium chloride) and sodium, many falsely believing salt is not used only for taste but it's essential for health.

Sodium is a vital element that is found in almost all plants and animals and there is no need for an extra sodium intake because our food has plenty.

givan··on It’s Complicated: Unraveling the mystery of why people act as they do
Call it anyway you want, lizard brain, flyers (Castaneda), Yaldabaoth (agnostics), this force that pushes evolution on earth at great speed through predatorial behavior like competition and flight or fight.

We humans are the most intelligent species and still can't overcome it, as a civilization whatever political system or religion we tried no matter how hard we try we can't seem to overcome it, we still have wars and violence.

When few succeed to inspire people to overcome it and fight without violence like Mahatma Gandhi did they inspire humanity and are called saints by their nation.

When an individual can control his own feelings to such an extent that violence or anger feelings can no longer touch him we call him enlightened.

Maybe this force is not only trying to help us evolve but wants to teach us something marvelous if we overcome it.

givan··on The dark legacy of Carlos Castaneda (2007)
I like Don Juan's explanation for our lizard brain in "Active side of infinity"

[Long ago, the native sorcerer/shamans of Mexico] discovered that we have a companion for life," he said, as clearly as he could. "We have a predator that came from the depths of the cosmos, and took over the rule of our lives. Human beings are its prisoners. The predator is our lord and master. It has rendered us docile; helpless. If we want to protest, it suppresses our protest. If we want to act independently, it demands that we don't do so.

They took over because we are food for them, and they squeeze us mercilessly because we are their sustenance. Just as we rear chickens in chicken coops, gallineros, the predators rear us in human coops, humaneros. Therefore, their food is always available to them.

Think for a moment, and tell me how you would explain the contradiction between the intelligence of man the engineer, and the stupidity of his systems of beliefs; or the stupidity of his contradictory behavior. Sorcerers believe that the predators have given us our systems of beliefs; our ideas of good and evil; our social mores. The predators are the ones who set up our hopes and expectations, and dreams of success or failure. They have given us covetousness, greed, and cowardice. It is the predators who make us complacent, routinary, and egomaniacal

They gave us their mind! Do you hear me? The predators give us their mind which becomes our mind. The predators' mind is baroque, contradictory, morose, and filled with the fear of being discovered any minute now

The more I thought about it, and the more I talked to and observed myself, and my fellow men, the more intense the conviction that something was rendering us incapable of any activity or any interaction or any thought that didn't have the self as its focal point.

The flyers are an essential part of the universe, and they must be taken as what they really are; awesome, monstrous. They are the means by which the universe tests us. We are energetic probes created by the universe and it's because we are possessors of energy that has awareness that we are the means by which the universe becomes aware of itself.

The flyers are the implacable challengers. They cannot be taken as anything else. If we succeed in doing that, the universe allows us to continue

givan··on Dreaming Outside Our Heads
I think that what he wants to say that is difficult to locate the "now", if you read a little more he explains it more clearly.

"the quickest neural processes still require tens of milliseconds to complete as electronic and chemical signals travel back and forth across the meters of neural circuitry packed in our brains. So even for the neuroscientists the physical stuff that they view as constituting our conscious experience is spread over space and time, albeit tiny spaces. In fact, if we wanted to be really rigorous and consider only what is present at one instant in time, the world as we know it would disappear. Sounds, light, voices, gestures, actions, words, all require a flexible notion of nowness that encompasses more than a single instant."

givan··on Atmospheric CO2 levels accelerate upwards
When debugging performance problems you always search for the biggest bottlenecks not the minor ones, so what are the biggest contributors to CO2?

I don't think the problem is the number of people living on earth but how modern society is making people live, for example some big contributors are high meat consumption (cattle methane) inefficient transportation (big suvs with just the driver inside sitting in traffic jams) consumerism that drive all those factories to produce mostly useless products that break easily to be soon replaced etc.

We need to change or habits not our numbers, this is the source of the problem.

givan··on The Purpose of Sleep? To Forget, Scientists Say
Anybody that studies Carl Jung work on dreams will understand how superficial this theory that tries to explain sleep as forgetting is, and how this theory fails to account for symbols and archetypes that show in dreams, also any event can be remembered by hypnosis so nothing is really forgotten with sleep.
