giulivo··on Brackets: The Open Source Code Editor for the Web
I just wanted to give this a try, but the "single" part not written in HTML, CSS and Javascript (the native shell it runs from) has not been ported to Linux yet.
giulivo··on You can now deploy on OpenShift *anything* that speaks HTTP. Boom
Red Hat will also release the code of OpenShift. http://www.readwriteweb.com/cloud/2012/03/red-hat-sets-a-dat...
giulivo··on The Evolution of a Python Programmer
i can clearly see me in the first few trials :P
giulivo··on AMD cpu bug (by Matthew Dillon)
for a longer description of the problem see this (amazing work): http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.os.dragonfly-bsd.kernel/14471
giulivo··on Things You Should Never Do, Part I
I may not understand very deeply the topic discussed, but IMHO the FSF and Torvalds started a (very) successful movement which is all about contributing and sharing the code. It is, many years later, providing us with code of very high quality used in a number of complex and critical environments. I don't think FLOSS developers use to think that other's code is a mess... but there is no mention of open source in the article.
giulivo··on Thoughts on Growing Old
> If I could go back to being 20 again, but stay the person I am, I would. But if going back to being 20 meant going back to being the person I was when I was 20, there's no way I would do that.

I'm not even 30 yet, but this is an always true statement. Thanks for sharing it.

giulivo··on The myth of the eight-hour sleep
I'm going to say something not so geeky but I think babies also sleep in segments and for shorter periods. We mainly adapt their "natural" habits to the society we're living. Is it for the better or not, I don't know.
giulivo··on Tornado 2.2 released
MongoDB with asyncmongo
giulivo··on Let's make TCP faster
I found this part to be the real great news:

All our work on TCP is open-source and publicly available. We disseminate our innovations through the Linux kernel, IETF standards proposals, and research publications.

giulivo··on Debian is now the most popular Linux distribution on web servers
actually the major versions upgrade problem is fixed in Fedora, there are some "yum upgrade faq" which document how to do it: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_yum

but I'd still prefer a rolling release like Archlinux does

giulivo··on Facebook machine learning technology improves; Redditors alaramed.
I'm sure there are other technologies which can be used for geolocalization and can achieve similar "performances" (I'm thinking about WIFI networks or IP, in some cases).

Still, I wouldn't expect a digital camera to put those informations in the EXIF (assuming it does have a WIFI and/or an IP address)

Also, to me Facebook doesn't seem to be using any magical machine learning algorithm capable to recognize the location of a PIC from a face, it never did on my PICs, not even when there were landscapes in it.

The guy could instead have uploaded the photo using a smartphone which added the GPS coordinates.

But what do YOU think instead? How does that work? Is it working also for your uploads?

giulivo··on Facebook machine learning technology improves; Redditors alaramed.
I think it's just GPS positioning by the smart phone. I wouldn't be fooled by a liar.
giulivo··on Pen.io is now probably the most minimalist blog platform on the Web
I was looking for some demo pages, but the link at the bottom http://pen.io/showlast.php (latest pages) is actually showing only the latest, which are unfortunately frequently left empty or unmodified.

it would be nice to have some "pick random" link, choosing across some well visited pages.

giulivo··on Why I'm So Happy About MongoDB
I'm having lot of fun with mongo's stored javascript (procedures), give a look at this: http://dirolf.com/2010/04/05/stored-javascript-in-mongodb-an...
giulivo··on [dead]
for the glory, it does not use 90 percent less memory!

apparently the Facebook’s PR agency originally stated incorrectly that HHVM provided a ”90 percent reduction in memory cost” over Facebook’s existing HipHop interpreter.

then the Facebook’s post on HHVM was later corrected by Facebook’s engineers.

see: http://techcrunch.com/2011/12/09/hiphop-virtual-machine/

giulivo··on Ev News? Did I just see a test, Hacker News was titled Ev News for a second.
so this was not an hoax? (not just a modified screenshot I mean)
giulivo··on Poll: HN EU readers, should we start lobbying the EU?
you may also want to give a look at the EBN network (european business network) which via BICs (business innovation centre) pursue the following:

> All funds available to the Association will be devoted to the pursuit of the Association’s aims and objects. Its main object is to promote the growth of Business and Innovation Centres both within and outside the European Union (EU), the aim of which is to set up new small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and/or new activities within existing SMEs based on new ideas with growth potential. It will mobilize any system, service or activity, which may directly or indirectly assist its members in achieving their objectives with optimum professionalism and efficiency.

giulivo··on The PC is dead. Why no angry nerds?
It will probably make me look pathetic (angry nerd maybe), but I don't have a tablet and I don't use much my smartphone, if not for calling people.

I found these devices to be very uncomfortable for my tipical usage. The only good addon I've got in my smartphone was the GPS navigation.

I could never browse the internet on a smartphone and I could never look at a tablet more than 30mins while also being comfortable in using it.

And if I had to plug in into a tablet a standard keyboard and a nicer monitor to make it "usable", I would rather buy some mini PC.

giulivo··on Show HN: Entire concerts algorithmically "reconstructed" from YouTube videos
to me, it looks amazing

some techie questions, how does it work? how do you get to know which videos are actually part of a specific event? how do you match the video with the actual song?

giulivo··on Humane.js 2.1 released - simple modern notification system
this actually stacks notifications too
giulivo··on Free Stanford Class with Steve Blank
I would not look "stupid" to you, but I'm not even sure I've understood the actual differences between the two classes :(

Did you find the course schedule or some more detailed informations about them?

giulivo··on Stanford to host more online classes
+1

also, what about the DB class ? will it be running again in 2012 ?

I couldn't "attend" more than one at the same time (especially the advanced tracks) and I already joined the ML class.

giulivo··on Asynchronous UIs - the future of web user interfaces
+1

a sync problem on the server can't be worked around on the client side. You would end up introducing complexity in an unstable, unaffordable and insecure client.

also, actions like filling a page with data from a db do require the client to wait for the server to complete.

giulivo··on How To Log Bash History to Syslog
there is also a library intended to do this. snoopy logger, can easily be preloaded on linux to make it work without changing the existing applications

https://github.com/renard/snoopylogger

giulivo··on Show HN: AI tool reads privacy policies, tells you which sites sell your info.
I tried the policizer with some copy and pasted policies but it frequently told me "CAN SELL" just because the text did not include any specifics regarding selling and bankruptcy

it that the intended behaviour?

giulivo··on The Real Reason Italy Sucks at the Startup Game
blaming on "something" or "someone" else you could say, but hey bad governments and mafia DO exist
giulivo··on The Real Reason Italy Sucks at the Startup Game
not to defend Italians, but 20 (probably more) years of bad government and mafia collusion have robbed money from salaries and people, killing every real chance of growth and without giving back in turn any good social service

to me these have at least influenced "Fatalism" and "Risk aversion"

giulivo··on Steam loses user database
It wouldn't have been a big issue, but they should have never ever save the credit card informations on a db. I don't know what makes people so confident they can save others credit card on a db.

I would rather prefer to repost the needed details for every purchase.

giulivo··on If Italy Were a Small Business...(A Way to Understand the Euro Crisis)
also how much a "regional" crisis affects an internet business?
giulivo··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I would like to get an RSS feed for the user's upvoted/submitted links (questions).
