gitarr··on Pirate Bay Founders’ Prison Sentences Final, Supreme Court Appeal Rejected
You are using circular logic here: "They were convicted and that's proof that what they did is illegal."

You are saying that never ever innocent people are convicted. We all know this is not true, not by a long shot and in no country.

gitarr··on Pirate Bay Founders’ Prison Sentences Final, Supreme Court Appeal Rejected
Maybe because the facts speak against the verdict?

TPB has hosted torrent files, they were not hosting content, so what they did was perfectly legal.

The verdict of this case, which ignores the facts, shows clear signs of US pressure on the Swedish legal system and politicians there. There is no other explanation.

gitarr··on US bars friends over Twitter joke
I don't know what else to say then people like those border agents and the incredible stupidity they seem to posses are a bigger danger to humanity than anyone else could ever be.

It's so ridiculous that it's not even funny anymore and I for one will not conduct business with, nor visit the US before things change for the better there.

They have to treat their own people better as well as visitors, not only the rich.

I know there are still worse countries, but only just, and it's never a good thing to measure oneself against bad examples.

gitarr··on [dead]
The big problem that githire has is that it is an opt-out service and not an opt-in one.

Programmers are usually very savvy internet users and don't want to be opted in automatically. If I want to participate I opt-in.

Also the opt-out procedure where you have to authorize their application to get out is very counter productive to say the least.

gitarr··on Show HN: We made an addictive way to browse pictures on reddit
I do not like these kind of services because they take away ad revenue from the sites providing and generating that content.

"Mongout" seems to do this for reddit and imgur, both sites where I willfully disable my ad-blocker.

gitarr··on Can we kill the music business too?
As a musician who is sick of the music industry: Yes, please!

(I'm currently transitioning into programming, as I cannot stand the "biz" part of the "music biz" anymore.)

gitarr··on Megaupload down, FBI Charges Seven With Online Piracy
What a sad day for free speech and the internet.

The USA is no longer a democracy. Shady companies and the richest couple of assholes owning everything are making the decisions now and instruct their politicians and their law agencies on who to attack.

This will not bode well with "the internet", which is just another term for millions of intelligent people around the world who are not happy with this system anymore. We are waking up and it is going to get ugly.

Copying is not theft. When people download something they probably wouldn't have bought it anyway, or they did afterwards. Intellectual copyright is a fallacy.

gitarr··on Python 3.0 or not?
The estimated transition time between versions 2 and 3 is 5 years. We are about 3 years into these 5 years now. Many libs and packages already have ported to python3 and many others are working on it right now.

Python 3 is coming, there are no doubts about it.

gitarr··on Google IP Vandalizing OpenStreetMap [Not a comprehensive post]
I disagree: Actually the best way to get answers from a too-big-to-communicate company like Google is to make the whole process as transparent and out in the open as possible.

Google is notoriously difficult to contact for most people. One of the best ways to get them to respond is to let as many people as possible know about the issue at hand.

Public backlash -> answers.

gitarr··on Juvia: Free software Disqus comment server
It's just funny because Disqus is criticized right away within the readme on github.
gitarr··on Juvia: Free software Disqus comment server
Misleading title as this is not a "Disqus comment server", but a comment server unrelated to Disqus written in RoR.
gitarr··on Poll: Do you think HN should go dark in protest of SOPA?
The best way to keep everyone at home and thinking there is nothing I can do to change anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if governments around the world are using sock-puppet accounts on a variety of sites to spread exactly this sentiment and to keep the masses quiet. (For the ones about to call me crazy, read this before you do: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/mar/17/us-spy-oper...)

gitarr··on List of every member of congress who supports SOPA, sortable by donations
This might be a stupid question, but as a European not all too familiar with US political laws I have to ask:

How is it not corruption when senators and congressmens votes can be bought by companies or whole industries?

gitarr··on Django 1.3.1 Security releases issued
"The first three security issues above were all reported to us by Paul McMillan, who -- due to his prolific work on identifying and helping to mitigate security issues in Django -- has now been added to the Django core development team. The patches for the above issues were also developed primarily by Paul."

This is one reason why Django is awesome.

gitarr··on [dead]
To make sense of this one would have to think about the nice houses and luxury articles these politicians will buy for their wives and/or mistresses from the money they got from the copyright holders for this.

Yea, I'm cynical, why are you not?

gitarr··on LulzSec releases trove of AZ law enforcement documents
Yes, just "script kiddies" with automated tools.
gitarr··on Admin of irc.lulzsec.org Arrested in UK
Would be nice of the media and all the commenters (including this thread), who all publicly crucified the guy in no time, to now apologize and stop spreading bullshit rumors.

But that'll never happen.

The master-minds of the media and those commenters are still nowhere to be found.

gitarr··on Official Debian/Ubuntu packages for Dropbox
This, also to me, seems a little fishy. I doubt this repo is official. I'd like to see the dropbox staff to comment on this here.
gitarr··on Usenet is officially dead ...
It's not dead, its purpose shifted, that is all.
gitarr··on AusCERT arrest - yes, "arrest"
The way I understand the story, it's not the researcher who got arrested but an unrelated journalist who covered the story.

The police abused their power and then right out lied about it, only when they get caught in their lie they say oops our bad. This stinks.

Austrialian police just lost a lot of trust and they will have to work hard on getting that back. A first step would be to give the iPad back they stole.

gitarr··on An Open Letter to Matt Cutts & the Google Web Spam Team
I hate SEO with a passion.

In my opinion, if you want to get good search engine results just provide good content.

I also think that "SEO experts" are modern day snake oil salesmen and should be avoided.

gitarr··on Dear Record Labels: Focus on Buyers, Not Thieves
Everybody knows the record companies will fade away. It's not because of piracy though. Two reasons that come to mind are that there are no more physical "records" needed, and, that the quality of the produced music went down the hill since the seventies. There are very few exceptions.

What's played on radio and music-tv stations nowadays is just bad and bad music is pushed by the music execs to them.

Lady Gaga, Kesha, all the hip hop bullshit, all the alternative crap, most rap, the black eyes peas (!!!) do I need to say more? That's not music, it's a show to make money, and nothing more. No way I, or anyone else interested in music would buy that.

I am a musician, I even studied music, and I cannot find a radio station with proper music, I find some streams, the same way I cannot find a record label to produce my music, they say it would be "too unpopular", I find some live concerts though, which keeps me alive.

There is no room for just good songs anymore, so there is no room for the record industry, who caused that.

gitarr··on Wikileaks cables reveal US pressuring Canada on IP enforcement
"Have any of the leaks brought us anything productive?"

How about all the democratic uprisings in the middle east?

All the leaks are pure facts. The truth is always worth being told. Would you rather live in a dream world that really doesn't exist?

gitarr··on Rootkit on a Brand new Toshiba laptop
Isn't this "unauthorized access to computer systems[1]"?

When buying a laptop on Amazon, is there some sort of agreement/contract between the buyer and the "security" firm where one signs his privacy away?

Especially the screenshot taking would be a concern to me. What if you were working on secret company files while screens are being taken?

gitarr··on Guido van Rossum on PyCharm
Version 2 just came out and i love it.

Also worth a look in my opinion is Aptana Studio 3, which is basically Eclipse with optimized settings and installed plugins for web-development, Python (PyDev), rails, ...

One thing I installed on top was a mercurial plugin from the eclipse marketplace, otherwise it's pretty complete for my needs.

gitarr··on The US Government Keeps Harassing a UW Researcher Who Speaks for WikiLeaks
I think people who stand on the side lines and do not take part in movements that have an open and objectively good cause could be called part of the problem by not doing anything.

Let me give an example: In my country, when a motorist witnesses an accident with injured people, he is required by law to provide first aid to the injured and call additional help to the scene. Needless to say, first aid education is required when applying for a drivers license here.

Some people will help if they see injured people on the side of the road and some people will not. I call the latter cowards and they are doing harm by not providing timely help or even call for professional help. People die because other people look away and ignore them.

Now, I think what ioerror is doing is brave, and everybody not doing the same or more is a coward (including me, I'd like to do more, yet all I can do is trying to make information available to as many people as possible). He does not look away.

Bradley Manning did not look away. He is the one who is the bravest man in this equation. He knew what he did would have consequences, yet looking away while innocent people get mown down video-game stile needs a special kind of ignorance and evil to be able to ignore or even call it OK.

The US government is able to do that at the moment including large parts of the population. Cowards, all of them.
