gitarr··on Megaupload Boss Kim Dotcom Says New Zealand Police Beat Him
The whole thing reeked of wrongdoings and corruption from the start.

There are video and image recordings of the raid, but guess what, the crown wants to suppress those.[1]

gitarr··on Mezzanine 1.2 and Cartridge 0.6 (Django CMS and Ecommerce platforms) released
This is exactly what I need for an upcoming project of mine.

So clean, with amazing features and best of all in Python, this will be fun.

gitarr··on Changing My Mind On Microsoft
I agree with most of the article, but the "The Ubuntu Unity failure" was only a temporary one.

The author says it got better, but in reality Unity already overtook Windows' UI and it will overtake Apples UI with one of its next iterations.

As a younger (though not that young) developer I have to agree that using MS developer tools is the wrong way of doing things for most new software, not all of them though, it sure has its uses. But I am strongly against proprietary software that only runs on one OS as that will only lose you business. Even the game platform Steam seems to have gotten to that point, a Linux port is on its way.

gitarr··on It’s Time To Stop Blaming Internet Explorer
As long as Microsoft will not implement the same features, in a similar time frame and in a compatible way as the other browser vendors they should be blamed and shamed.

The article says IE9 is a damn good browser without qualifying why they think that it is, I respectfully disagree.

gitarr··on Facebook's e-mail debacle: One 'bug' fix, but rollback impossible
If lawyers are reading this, a question:

Our governments are treating our emails more and more like real mail (aka. letters).

Is there not a law prohibiting third party people or companies to mess with(fake) my mail addresses?

Fact is, I do not want a facebook email address. And I have given no consent for my email address to be changed.

gitarr··on Python 3.3.0 beta 1 released
Well you don't get compilation to machine code with Python, but you won't get that with many languages. And the ones that do compile are often a pain to write in.

So, I for one always go with "Always use the right tool for the problem at hand.", which means I use Python for most things and something like C for the few things that have to be faster.

To answer your question: Python is fast enough for most things. It depends on how and what you are using it for though.

gitarr··on Python Packaging: Hate, hate, hate everywhere
Yes!

Every developer should know one of the very helpful and working ways of doing things in open source software development: "Stop complaining, fix it."

It's one thing to complain about closed source software that you have to use and probably paid for as well. But a very different one to complain about free and open source software that you want to use.

Stop the bickering, start the work on fixing the problem instead.

gitarr··on DjangoCon Europe 2012 Videos
Bittorrent is probably one of the best methods for this kind of thing.
gitarr··on Germany, Not Greece, Should Exit the Euro
Agreed.

It seems to me that especially American and British led news agencies seem to deliberately try to undermine the Euro zone with anti-Euro-propaganda. I'm sick of hearing how bad it all is, while it isn't, and it's much worse elsewhere.

I'm from Austria, and we are doing just fine, with low unemployment numbers, a growing economy and general optimism for the future. The Euro helped us a lot, and we are able to help other EU states through it.

Stop listening to entities like "Bloomberg", they seem to be wrong a lot.

gitarr··on Skype IP Lookup
It might not be their fault, but it sure is their responsibility now.
gitarr··on Skype IP Lookup
Well this is scary for Skype users and very embarrassing for Skype developers/owners aka. Microsoft.

I sure hope they fix this before they get sued into oblivion for this blatant privacy breach.

gitarr··on Ubuntu Releases 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
The IT guy has last looked at Ubuntu a couple years ago, he was surprised how far it had come. He is working a Windows domain at the job.
gitarr··on [dead]
No, style has nothing to do with superficial looks.
gitarr··on Ubuntu Releases 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
I have been at a clients location with my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop today.

The "IT guy" there and all the other (non IT) office staff asked me what this is and how they could get it. I had to do a full 15 minutes of explanations about Ubuntu. You cannot imagine the looks after I told them it is free.

gitarr··on [dead]
I prefer the style of Python to the ones of Ruby anyday.

I also prefer the style of Hackernews/Reddit to the one of Digg. Digg may look better, but its style and content is what i don't like.

gitarr··on MPAA Filter Censors Legit Torrent Files on isoHunt
Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime. ~Potter Stewart
gitarr··on "Linux switch saved city millions and reduced user complaints"
It seems to me that some Microsoft (and maybe Apple) marketing people are hard at work at every discussion about this topic, even here.
gitarr··on Suddenly Microsoft is the Hippest Tech Company Around
No, it is not.

What prevents them from being anywhere near "hip" is their past/present actions and our memory.

gitarr··on Hacker Jobs is live and we want your feedback
There is no good way of "drilling down" when browsing the jobs. Meaning I cannot look for existing locations and then by language etc.

Also, where are all the tags? I can see the popular ones, but none of the others.

These are the major problems that I see standing out.

Personally I really hate these "follow us on twitter and like us on facebook" kind of things. Be your own company.

If you ever implement a login system do not make it "connect with facebook" or similar, as people looking for or posting jobs deserve their privacy.

gitarr··on On The Use of Code in Weblog Titles
I find it hilarious how some of the mentioned bloggers have 0 sense of humor. Why so serious?
gitarr··on Microsoft Censors Pirate Bay Links in Windows Live Messenger

gitarr··on Microsoft Censors Pirate Bay Links in Windows Live Messenger
Until someone can prove a negative impact of piracy on the copyright holders all you say is rubbish and plain wrong.

No company should be allowed to hinder my free speech.

And no worries, I do not use any Microsoft products, but I can IM people who do use live messenger from Linux IM apps. I am guessing I will be censored anyway, which is just horrible and outrageous.

gitarr··on Microsoft Censors Pirate Bay Links in Windows Live Messenger
No, this nick is private and privacy is what i want to keep in this case.
gitarr··on Microsoft Censors Pirate Bay Links in Windows Live Messenger
I am a musician who would never deal with RIAA, instead we put both our albums on The Pirate Bay to download and spread for free.

Now I cannot link to those albums in Microsoft software because they censor all links?

That my friend is as anti free speech as it gets, and this censorship really erodes society not the sharing and copying of files.

gitarr··on Poll: What's Your Favorite Programming Language?
The real beauty of Python is the fact that it is easy for beginning programmers, yes, but it has also a lot to offer for experienced coders concerning all the advanced things they might need.

It's no accident that services like Dropbox[1] or YouTube[2], both arguably very complex systems, are relying on Python as their language of choice.

gitarr··on Google bans reddit client from Play Store for "sexually explicit material"
Why is the US such a prude country?

They show people blowing their head off with a gun in the afternoon news while children are watching, but omg, a boob or even worse a nipple they go crazy!

This ban has to be taken back, or all other means to browse reddit must be banned as well, including all google browsers, etc. I see a lawsuit coming otherwise.

gitarr··on Why we need Python in the Browser
So Python is a scripting language and not a "real programming language"? - What a stupid comment.

Python is a full and mature programming language, lots of software you probably use every day is written in it, like dropbox, calibre, miro or websites like Reddit and YouTube for example.

You'll find a longer list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Python_software

Sure you can use Python for scripting, but that doesn't mean it isn't a real programming language. It just makes it more versatile than other languages.

gitarr··on Kim Dotcom’s first TV interview: ‘I’m no piracy king’
You are using words like "blatantly", "profiteering" and lump all of HN together, saying that all of HN supports MU and its bosses and that you don't understand this at all.

This smells all too much of a biased statement without any depth in order to influence the public opinion of MU negatively. But I'll bite anyway.

---

The thing is that you are missing the point completely:

Copyright infringement on MU was apparently only committed by third parties (aka The Internet), as is done on sites like YouTube, every other file sharing site, video, audio and similar sites.

Yet you don't see the Google bosses in jail and their houses raided and assets frozen do you? They are blatantly profiteering off of copyright infringing materials on YouTube as well, you know.

The DMCA regulates what these services have to do to protect copyrights and them selves. MU apparently did just that.

One other point I will make here is that studies have shown that pirating on the internet has no negative effect on the profits of the copyright holders. Explain to me why pirates are being hunted like the worst offenders anyway.

Now, do you still not understand why some people here seem to have a different stance on this topic than you?
