gingerlime··on Show HN: If you lose your memory, how to regain access to your computer?
Other than passwords though, I also have stuff installed at home on a Synology NAS, a mail server, a VPS running some websites (my own, family, my wife's), Home Assistant, Family photos with backups etc etc.

I wonder who would not only have the passwords, but the know-how to manage the whole thing, at least to transition it to more managed services...

gingerlime··on How vibe coding is killing open source
Exactly. Whilst I can see the problem with vibe-coded "contribution" that lower the signal/noise ratio on big OSS project, it's also "liberating" in the sense that forking becomes much more viable now. If previously it took time to dive into a project to tweak it to your needs, it's now trivial.

So in many senses AI is democratising open-source.

gingerlime··on What I learned building an opinionated and minimal coding agent
I don’t follow nor use pi so no horse in this race, but I think the results were never submitted to terminal bench? not sure how the process works exactly but it’s entirely missing from the benchmark. is this a sign of weakness? I honestly don’t know.
gingerlime··on My ridiculously robust photo management system (Immich edition)
From what I was reading immich should preserve your original media. I saw this bug report[0] but it’s not clear if it’s an app upload bug, iOS bug or maybe depends on the device??

I don’t use immich (yet) but this is the kind of stuff I worry about. I’m planning to use it in read only mode though and sync my photos using PhotoSync rather than rely on the app.

gingerlime··on My ridiculously robust photo management system (Immich edition)
do you mean it loses the original fps rate, or just that you can’t easily view it?
gingerlime··on My ridiculously robust photo management system (Immich edition)
any pointers on how it works with immich on the NAS and your desktop “contributing” processing power?
gingerlime··on Find 'Abbey Road when type 'Beatles abbey rd': Fuzzy/Semantic search in Postgres
Great post. Explains the concepts just enough that they click without going too deep, shows practical implementation examples, how it fits together. Simple, clear and ultimately useful. (to me at least)
gingerlime··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
no unsubscribe button in this MS Copilot campaign. And they’re trying to gaslight like it’s some essential notification when it’s clearly and blatantly unnecessary marketing spam.
gingerlime··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
Same. Posted a comment about it [0]. I already filed a GDPR and ePrivacy compliants. Happy to share notes. Contact details in my profile.

gingerlime··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
I’ve had a similar experience when signing up for Office365 and started getting promotional emails to CoPilot. These (2) emails were without an unsubscribe option.

I contacted MS support and after some back n forth they claimed it was a transactional email that doesn’t require consent or opt out.

Clearly promotional and not necessary but they won’t listen.

I’m in the process of filing GDPR + ePrivacy complaints, but it’s a tedious process, unlikely to do anything.

gingerlime··on Show HN: Yolobox – Run AI coding agents with full sudo without nuking home dir
Thanks. Yes.

Connecting via an open port between containers isn't a problem though. They all see each other by name anyway (e.g. I can run a pg client to `db` and it will JustWork). The problem is when the coding agent needs to run commands inside the container, or restart the container, inspect logs etc.

If the agent is outside the container, it can run docker (compose) commands and do all that, and it works great. If the agent however is inside the container, it can't. Without mapping the socket that is.

gingerlime··on Show HN: Yolobox – Run AI coding agents with full sudo without nuking home dir
Not sure I understand what you mean. Could you explain?
gingerlime··on Show HN: Yolobox – Run AI coding agents with full sudo without nuking home dir
Yeah, you can bind mount the host's docker engine with -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock ... but yeah, it's potentially dangerous and might also get confusing for the AI agent and/or the user.
gingerlime··on Show HN: Yolobox – Run AI coding agents with full sudo without nuking home dir
I do (most of) my development in docker containers. Usually a project will have a docker compose with web server, database etc.

How can I use this so the yolobox container can interact with the other docker containers (or docker compose)?

gingerlime··on Show HN: Tommy – Turn ESP32 devices into through-wall motion sensors
Very cool. How does it work in an apartment building? both practically not detecting my neighbors movement. But also from a privacy standpoint, can someone spy on me with this technology?
gingerlime··on Where to learn how to build an A/B testing tool?
plugging Alephbet[0] the open source A/B testing framework I created and used for many years.

Alephbet is the JS frontend running experiments. Lamed is the backend running on AWS lambda with redis as data store. There’s also a Rails backend with Postgres if you prefer.

gingerlime··on Hotwire: HTML Over The Wire
It’s entertaining and he points to some bugs like race conditions that shouldn’t be there, but I’m not sure if it’s specific to Hoywire. Also his statement that DHH/Rails claim Hotwire is the only way, or that you cannot also use React or plain JS is just silly and disingenuous.
gingerlime··on Object to your information being used for AI at Meta
I clicked the link on the email, entered the EU country I live in, something about my GDPR right of privacy and was immediately “approved”. YMMV
gingerlime··on Show HN: Swinvo AI – Automate Outlook Email Tasks with Plain English
Cool idea. I guess some might be concerned about the privacy implications of giving access to their emails, so perhaps you could add some info on why you can be trusted?

Can you give any pointers on how to create such a plugin? I’m struggling even with a much simpler add-in to add an action inside Outlook for individual emails.

gingerlime··on Stalwart mail server (self-hosted all-in-one mail server) now as an admin webui
I’m using postfix/dovecot with mysql backed accounts (compatible with postfixadmin) and I have a tiny bash script that:

* generates a random email

* asks for an optional description

* inserts new email to the database

* adds an entry to postgrey whitelist

* emails me the address and description (so I can search the email address later in my inbox if necessary)

Works a treat for me, but not something my family can use.

gingerlime··on The Ethics of AI in Military Decision-Making: Unpacking Lavender and Its Impact
Any way to unflag? it’s politics, but extremely relevant to the tech crowd. How AI literally affects people’s life and death.
gingerlime··on How deceptive design is used to compromise your privacy and how to fight back
the penalty can be significant under GDPR, but enforcement is lacking severely
gingerlime··on Goodbye non-KISS appliances
Yes and no. First it should be a German Miele. But in general, new Mieles aren’t as good as old ones. Across the board. Washers, dryers, dishwashers. The only benefit they offer is energy efficiency (at least based on brochures). If I had to buy again, I would opt for second hand refurbished Miele/Bosch/Siemens with at least 10 years of age. Where I live there are lots of second hand shops that even offer warranty.

Our fridge however is Japanese Panasonic. Not a common choice in Europe but it’s been great so far. Zero maintenance. No frost. Has some minimal digital control but we don’t touch it. YMMV.

gingerlime··on "CSS is dramatically more difficult than learning assembly language" [audio]
I’ve been doing that for over a decade, without making tangible progress.
gingerlime··on "CSS is dramatically more difficult than learning assembly language" [audio]
slightly OT but can someone recommend how to learn CSS in 2023 for a backend web developer, who 30ish years ago grokked mainframe Assembly reasonably well (and since then developed in c, php, python, ruby, bash, etc etc)?

Can/do I start with tailwind? Do I start with old-school CSS or jump straight into flexbox? Do I need to care and learn about BEM, Sass, etc? Do I start with an empty page and build it? Do I need to copy a design? Can I jump into an existing page and tweak it?

Not trolling. It’s the kind of stuff that stumps me. Or am I just making excuses to myself why I can’t figure CSS out? (beyond tweaking margins, padding and maybe background-color and the real basics)

gingerlime··on Bitwarden adds support for passkeys
perhaps a better link? https://bitwarden.com/help/storing-passkeys/

Not sure if passkeys are supported on iOS or Android (only the browser extension is explicitly mentioned) and also they cannot be imported or exported according to the page.

gingerlime··on Show HN: Formbricks – Open-source alternative to Typeform and Sprig
Looks great. Was a big fan of Typeform in the early days.

I’m trying it on my iPhone SE 2022 and get this message:

Formbricks is not available for devices with smaller resolutions.

gingerlime··on Useless Ruby sugar: Pattern matching

Can you give an example or explain what you mean?

gingerlime··on Bootstrapping a SaaS Business in Germany: How I did it
Not so easy when you have a family.

To be clear, I don’t have a problem paying taxes in Germany. The problem for me is primarily how hard it is to set up a company and deal with bureaucracy here. And even though there are great alternatives like Estonia, they sadly don’t really solve the problem.

In contrast, and I don’t know the US but how many people live in Delaware? :)

gingerlime··on Bootstrapping a SaaS Business in Germany: How I did it
pay who 200€? in Germany? just the notary fee is in the hundreds and you probably need a lawyer and an accountant for a UG/GmbH. I’m trying this now with a new venture. Already have an accountant. But they’re slow and nonresponsive. I tried shopping around and literally got turned down left and right with these types of messages: “Unfortunately we do not have the capacity to take on any new clients at the moment.”

Lawyers can’t seem to advise on tax issues or how to best structure your business(es). Tax advisors cannot seem to actually create a company. It’s a total mess. At least for anything nontrivial and for me as a non-German.

I thought maybe Estonia or someplace else in Europe, but the tax rules are such that if your center of operation is in Germany, you still need to do taxes here.

If anyone has tips or good contacts (accountants lawyers etc), I’d love to hear.
