gibs0ns··on New Features in the Fish Shell
Many years ago, before I discovered fish, I tried the loved by many zsh shell, but found myself spending too much time messing with the configs to get it how i wanted. On my quest to find something better and avoid coding my own, I discovered fish. fish is easily one of my all time favorite linux cheats to increase productivity, without spending hours tweaking configs. It is very usable out of the box, and includes a web-ui mode to make easy basic customization stuff like theme and PS1 var. Finding/re-using command history is a breeze, you can

history -c curl # Return history that contains (-c) the word 'curl'
It's one of the first pieces of software I install to new Linux desktops. I still prefer to keep my servers bare, thus I use the default bash shell there.
gibs0ns··on Build a hit counter for Gatsby with React, AWS Lambda, and FaunaDB
It reads to me more like a sponsored blog post by the db saas mentioned in the article.

We elect a senior/experienced team member to provide most on-boarding, and continued assistance/training/mentorship during the new hire's probation period (usually 3 months). We then interview the new hire at the end of their probation period to get feedback on the training they received from the senior member they were paired with, and the on-boarding process in general.

We rotate between the senior members for each new hire, where it makes sense. The senior member in return receives a $ bonus during this time, and their effort also contributes towards their performance review. I've also noticed it helps the new hire integrate with our culture.

gibs0ns··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
I'm curious to the kind of gardening you're referring to, that applies to Arch but not Mint?

I will say, Linux Mint is my recommended Debian based distro for desktop use, it really is a better Ubuntu than Ubuntu.

gibs0ns··on Show HN: Handwritten.js – Convert typed text to realistic handwriting
It would be great if this could output a generated font file, which can then be used on the web etc.
gibs0ns··on Show HN: Multi-room audio with Snapcast and Raspberry Pi
Check out Rhasspy for voice control. IMO it's the best FOSS solution available for this atm.

gibs0ns··on GitHub has completed its acquisition of NPM
I for one appreciate that Microsoft is allowing these dev related acquisitions, such as Github, to maintain an individual brand image. I can't think of anything worst if they decided to reskin/theme these brands to be all Microsoft-y.
gibs0ns··on Ask HN: Non-cloud voice recognition for home use?
I was in the process of planning my multi-room voice-AI setup based on SnipsAI (to be integrated with Home Assistant) when it was announced they were bought by Sonos, which killed their open source project. Since then I have been left trying various projects that meet my needs.

Among those, I tried MyCroft, which still requires a cloud account to config various things on it, and it doesn't support a multi-room setup at this time.

I've since switched to Rhasspy, which offers a larger array of config options and engines, and also multi-room (I'm yet to config multi-room tho)

In the long-term I plan to "train" the voice-AI for various additions, including a custom wake word - No, I'm not calling it `Jarvis` ;)

I'm running each of these voice-AI's on a Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB model), though I'm considering switching them to Pi 3's. I'm using the `ReSpeaker 2mic Pi-Hat` on each pi for the mic input. I'm planning to configure all the satellite nodes (voice-AI in each room) to PXE boot, that way they don't require an sd-card and I can easily update their images/configs from a central location.

gibs0ns··on Jitsi Meet: open-source video conferencing
We've been using the Jitsi integration with Rocket.Chat for awhile now, it works seamlessly.
