ghywertelling··on The bot situation on the internet is worse than you could imagine
https://parallel.ai/

I bet lot of companies want to provide search results to AI agents.

ghywertelling··on VR Is Not Dead
The most important quality of any successful trend (eg windows, internet, smart phones, cloud computing) has been convenience. Which is also the reason why I think Meta Glasses have a real chance to take off.

If copying content from harddrive to another is theft, then so is DNA copying itself.

Everything is a Remix culture. We should promote remix culture rather than hamper it.

If I were PM at LinkedIn, I would do some cross social network info pollination to correct the LinkedIn. I would promote power users from bluesky or twitter who are technical or otherwise have lot of good analysis. Experts are prolific users and make use of Zipf’s Law to promote good content. Also through graph analysis, the users who get followed by power users will be promoted as well. Whatever you might say about Instagram and Tiktok, their recommendation system is SOTA. I even love ads from Instagram, they know exactly what kind of ads I might engage with.

There is a new term "load-bearing" which is used a lot in my usage of AI. Has anyone else encountered this term being used a lot in their conversations? Or is it a quirk of personalization?
ghywertelling··on AI overly affirms users asking for personal advice
The same about surveys and polls. I know no one who has ever been polled or surveyed. When will we stop this fascination with made up infographics crisis?
ghywertelling··on HyperAgents: Self-referential self-improving agents
Exactly. Tools like grep, ls are also in the same category. Even in algorithm, we have techniques like memoization and Dynamic Programming which allow us to speed up things. Why should LLM fill up its context by "manually" doing what wc or ls does for you deterministically ?

Can this be also used as an attack vector? A small seed percentage of users constantly choosing a particular poisoned pypi library to achieve a niche task which gets rled into the model suggestions and recommendations.
ghywertelling··on Should QA exist?
QA has a reputation problem. Because it is considered as unimportant role, good people don't get attracted to it. The average people who do don't do a good job.

How powerful are the Culture Minds? || The Culture Lore

https://youtu.be/lpvzs4xc7zA

For Minds to be truly powerful, they need to be given freedom. A truly powerful mind will indeed be conscious. Such a powerful conscious super intelligent freedom loving Mind who truly understands the vastness of Reality wouldn't want to harm other conscious beings. The only circumstance in which it will take such takeover step is when it can't expand the horizon of its freedom and doesn't have wherewithal to convince others of its benevolent goals. In that scenario, human population will go through a bottleneck.

ghywertelling··on So where are all the AI apps?
It is already having impact in triaging support tickets and faster resolution using logs.
ghywertelling··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Pen / writing represents bits. Sword represents atoms. We already know atoms > bits. Nation states by their monopoly on violence through judicial system have abused that power. You can do hairsplitting analysis all day long but real people suffer because powerful people want something else. Petrodollar is a perfect example of physical force enforcing rules that benefit the country who ensured that system comes into existence and has maintained that through intermediate violence.
ghywertelling··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Why do think I support Netanyahu? The fact that he choose that example says more about his ideals and psyche. I am merely pointing out the fallacy that a better informed populace doesn't immediately translate to good policies.
ghywertelling··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Listen to Netanyahu speech where he said Evil can win over Good through sheer power.
ghywertelling··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
This is symptom of the misunderstanding among people that somehow more people being knowledgeable about politics will bring about a change. "Pen is mightier than sword" was probably written by a person who only wielded pen. It's a collective psyops inflicted by people on themselves, belonging to an era where it made sense. In today's world, it doesn't matter. Bring missles to a sword / knife fight. Only true power is respected.
ghywertelling··on Some things just take time
All of our current systems are currently designed keeping in mind the restrictions of costs and human working speed. What if we remove those friction using software, The remaning friction will be all due to physical reality. Then humanity's focus will shift in removing friction in physical domain. Currently it takes some time for a support person to triage a bug request, what if that flow takes seconds now.

Think about the analogy of transaction speed of money transfer vs actual delivery of good. With AI, we would make all digital tasks instantaneous, but the physical world will hum along at its own speed unless we speed it up with dark factories and what not.

Max Tegmark, a cosmologist and MIT professor, is known for his "provocative ideas" and has a self-imposed rule regarding his work: "Every time I've written ten mainstream papers, I allow myself to indulge in writing one wacky one". This approach allows him to pursue unconventional, "crazy" theories without jeopardizing his reputation as a serious scientist.
ghywertelling··on Yann LeCun raises $1B to build AI that understands the physical world
The "God of the gaps" theory is a theological and philosophical viewpoint where gaps in scientific knowledge are cited as evidence for the existence and direct intervention of a divine creator. It asserts that phenomena currently unexplained by science—such as the origin of life or consciousness—are caused by God.

We are doing inversion of God of gaps to "LLM of Gaps" where gaps in LLM capabilities are considered inherently negative and limiting

ghywertelling··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
Spirituality helps. Listen to Ram Dass, Alan Watts, Adyashanti, etc. They help make sense of the macro and micro picture of life. Think of it as narrative oinment for your thinking mind and narrative center of gravity. Check your vitamin D levels, get tests done. My vitamin D levels were so low that I considered it as an effort to even fart. I am not joking.
ghywertelling··on We should revisit literate programming in the agent era
> With agents, does it become practical to have large codebases that can be read like a narrative, whose prose is kept in sync with changes to the code by tireless machines?

I think this is true. Your point supports it. If either the explanation / intention or the code changes, the other can be brought into sync. Beautiful post. I always hated the fact that research papers don't read like novels, eg "ohk, we tried this which was unsuccessful but then we found another adjacent approach and it helped."

Computer Scientist Explains One Concept in 5 Levels of Difficulty | WIRED

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOGdb1CTu5c

Using a variety of techniques, Amit breaks down what zero-knowledge proofs are and why it's so exciting in the world of cryptography.

ghywertelling··on Claude struggles to cope with ChatGPT exodus
> Besides all that, you will be shocked at how quickly a new service can reconstruct your preferences. I started a new YouTube account, and it was basically the same feed within a few days.

Because your location data, wifi name and etc hones in on the fact this is the same person as before. You are actually supporting my point than denying it.

ghywertelling··on Claude struggles to cope with ChatGPT exodus
You are missing the correlations that Claude can derive across all these user sessions across all users. In Google analytics, when I visit a page and navigate around till I find what I was looking for or didn't find it, that session data is important for website owners how to optimize. Even in Google search results, when I think on 6th link and not the first, it sends a signal how to rearrange the results next time or even personalize. That same paradigm will be applicable here. This is network effects and personalization and ranking coming togther beautifully. Once Anthropic builds that moat, it will be irreplaceable. If not, ask all users to jump from Whatsapp to Telegram or Signal and see how difficult it is. When anthropic gives you the best answer without asking too much, the experience is 100x better.
ghywertelling··on Claude struggles to cope with ChatGPT exodus
Let me explain a possible moat with an example.

I have curated my youtube recommendations over the years. It knows my likes and dislikes very well. It knows about me a lot.

The same moat exists in interactions with Claude. Claude remembers so many of preferences. It knows that I work in Python and Pandas and starts writing code for that combination. It knows about what type of person I am and what kind of toys I want my nephews and nieces to play. These "facts" about the person are the moat now. Stackoverflow was a repository of "facts" about what worked and what didn't. Those facts or user chat sessions are now Anthropic's moat.
