ghughes··on Mass surveillance silences minority opinions, according to study
One day they may not.
ghughes··on Twitter’s User Growth Goes Nowhere as It Meets Revenue Expectations of $710M
That's 30 seconds too many because I didn't ask for them in the first place.
ghughes··on Forbes asked readers to turn off adblockers then immediately served them malware
> This point of view is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what the web is. HTML is more concerned with semantic abstractions than the specifics of how a page renders (use a pdf if you want to control the layout). This was an important design choice because it recognizes that the client is responsible for the rendering, which is free to completely ignore the suggestions made by the page.

You are describing the web as it was 25 years ago. No modern browser works this way.

ghughes··on Evernote’s 5% problem offers a cautionary lesson to tech companies
Doesn’t sound like the CEO thinks so. “It’s just terrible” isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.
ghughes··on Facebook is misleading Indians with its full-page ads about Free Basics
Even if this is entirely well-intentioned, which is certainly up for debate, it sets a precedent that will eventually see the world's most powerful media corporations become gatekeepers of the internet.

The web has been so successful because of any one of us can fire up a text editor and create the next phenomenon without spending a single dollar or seeking anyone's permission.

This is not charity, it is a coup d'état.

ghughes··on Google Launches Mortgage Shopping Tool in California
I'll bite: how did they work around the issue?
ghughes··on Show HN: Cancel your Comcast in 5 minutes
The incentive is that you get to keep your job.
ghughes··on Show HN: Careers for people not going to college, built with Meteor
This is excellent. I'd love to see something like this for college degrees too.
ghughes··on A Computational Approach for Obstruction-Free Photography [pdf]
Their ability to recover the reflected image seems valuable to security agencies.
ghughes··on Netflix Announces Its New ‘Unlimited’ Maternity and Paternity Leave Program
I'd expect it to work much better when there's an unlimited vacation policy from the start and the founders make a determined effort to push the culture in that direction.
ghughes··on Netflix Announces Its New ‘Unlimited’ Maternity and Paternity Leave Program
I'm highly suspicious of "unlimited" vacation or leave policies because the line between reasonable and not is still there, it's just way less visible and ultimately arbitrary, depending on your management chain and workload. I can't wait for this fad to die. Let's just have generous, well-defined leave policies that don't put the onus on the employee to figure out what is OK and what isn't.

"Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home." People also perform better at work when they're not worrying about repercussions for being seen to abuse their "unlimited" leave.

ghughes··on Ask HN: I'm going to have to lay people off, and want your advice
What did your accountant do?
ghughes··on Cardinals Face F.B.I. Inquiry in Hacking of Astros’ Network
That distinction seems somewhat dubious. The end result is the same.
ghughes··on Dear AirBNB, No Thank You for the XXX Freak Fest
How is Airbnb screwing him over? Their host guarantee says they'll pay for property damage, and they did. Ari's problem is that he got evicted for allowing the damage to happen on his watch.
ghughes··on Dear AirBNB, No Thank You for the XXX Freak Fest
Is it really a problem? I'd argue that it should be a matter of public record that this guy was evicted for (indirectly) causing $23k in property damage, and it seems entirely reasonable for landlords to screen tenants based on prior evictions and other housing court judgements.
ghughes··on To Get a Home in San Francisco, First Get a $200,000-a-Year Job
Less chance of the deal collapsing.
ghughes··on TextSecure's Private Group Messaging
That is indeed confusing. Because the names are so similar, there is an implied close relationship between these two entities. Have you considered renaming the project?
ghughes··on Popcorn Time is back
Editorialized title.

I enjoyed the part where they berate the other fork for "ripping off" their UI, which exists solely to facilitate piracy.

ghughes··on Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8.1 with personal assistant Cortana
Because it makes for a terrible user experience.
ghughes··on Show HN: Uber Spender Chrome Extension – spending data for Uber power-users
Thanks for this. I live in SF, don't own a car, and consider myself a frequent customer of Uber - yet my average monthly spend is less than 15% of the monthly rate for the nearest parking garage. Owning/leasing a car around here for anything other than commute is truly a shitty proposition.
ghughes··on ZX Spectrum devs claim missing royalties from Elite Systems
Another post from a dev who got scammed by this company: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/952953995/bluetooth-zx-...
ghughes··on ZX Spectrum devs claim missing royalties from Elite Systems
According to one of the forum posts linked elsewhere in this thread [1] his company's accounts are in the red, so even if someone were to sue and win, they aren't going to see any money.

ghughes··on Did this Tor developer become a victim of NSA's laptop interception program?
It's possible, but there is no evidence suggesting that is what happened here.

The overwhelming likelihood is that the package simply took an unusual route due to factors that are unknown to us. For this story to be true, it would require a level of incompetence that is orders of magnitude beyond that which we have previously seen from the NSA.

ghughes··on Did this Tor developer become a victim of NSA's laptop interception program?
I don't believe HIDs have the ability to install arbitrary drivers. Windows will try to identify the device and locate the driver via Windows Update, or use a generic HID driver. Or the OEM may have preinstalled drivers.

In any case, a malicious keyboard can simulate keypresses and pwn your machine that way. No evil driver needed.

ghughes··on Did this Tor developer become a victim of NSA's laptop interception program?
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by opaque logistics.
ghughes··on Searchlight Meetings: a key hiring process used at Facebook and Dropbox
If I know someone worth referring, I don't need a 30-60 minute meeting to get me to refer them. I'm just going to do it.
ghughes··on The Wallaby Card
Their security page [1] needs some work: apparently they "use SHA 256-bit encryption across all of our solutions" and "your personal account information is never compromised". SHA-256 is a hash algorithm, and it's not very clever of them to state that users' PII is never going to be compromised. Someone with an ounce of computer security knowledge needs to rewrite this page, quickly.

ghughes··on Square Cash
What are the verification steps for sending money to a previously unknown party? Is it SMS verification, or do you have to re-enter your card details?
ghughes··on Show HN: Run iOS apps in the browser
FWIW, I did the same thing. It needs to be clearer.
ghughes··on Feds shut down payment network Liberty Reserve. Is Bitcoin next?
No, because Bitcoin is decentralized and cannot be shut down in this manner.
