ghempton··on IDE WTF
It's funny, when I use the programs he mentions, I always wish I had some code to manipulate rather than use some esoteric GUI.
ghempton··on Facebook Now Allows You To “Download Your Information”
Regardless of whatever intentions fb has behind this, it honestly makes me feel warmer towards fb and their service. It now feels more like a personal data store that I can retrieve when I please.
ghempton··on Oracle Pricing [pdf]
How do you switch to the HTML5 version?
ghempton··on Ask HN: Did you ever do anything unethical to get your startup off the ground?
This sounds like a todo list for a non-technical co-founder.
ghempton··on $150 Android Tablet from Kmart
I totally agree. Someone needs to make a high-quality android tablet that is on par with the iPad. That was the problem with android originally, when the G1 was vastly inferior to the iPhone. It wasn't until high quality phones like the droid came out did android really take off.
ghempton··on 300 actions a minute? Truly mastering StarCraft
I have played SC, WC3 and the SC2 Beta and I love them all, but I feel as though they need to implement a more complex macro system to allow for advanced players to not need APM's this high. For me personally, it is just too tiring (physically) to attempt to consistently play 100+ APM games.
ghempton··on Ask HN: How do I get started freelancing?
That sounds scary. I wouldn't do that.

Why not just build yourself a website and put that in your portfolio rather than giving it away. Build a reviews site for some niche.

ghempton··on The Future of UI
Its kind of crazy how well project natal seems to work, especially considering that in the TED talk, gloves were required.
ghempton··on The Future of UI
He kind of fumbles on the question of "what is the killer app?" You'd think it would be on the tip of his tongue considering how long hes been working on this...

That said, there really needs to be more open source software to enable this front. I think we will really see some innovation once a hacker can take a $10 webcam and and open source lib and start creating software with these types of user interfaces.

ghempton··on Google Goes Native: Offers Sneak Peak at C++ Support in Chromium
I wish they would have started with LLVM or some other bytecode rather than x86 but this is a huge step towards having other languages in the browser.
ghempton··on Machine Translates Thoughts into Speech in Real Time
I want one.
ghempton··on Tell HN: Cinch, W7-like window management for OSX
What a milestone for windows when people on OSX are using 3rd party apps to emulate its UX.
ghempton··on Etherpad includes banned (on Google code) software JSMin
github ftw
ghempton··on WebGL Spec Initial Public Draft Released
I'm running the developer version of chrome and none of the demos work?
ghempton··on Why You Should Switch from Subversion to Git
You should checkout http://www.redmine.org/. Not only does it have real git support, but I much prefer it to Trac.
ghempton··on Sd - a peer to peer bugtracker I actually like
Bugs are so tightly coupled to the actual code that I am surprised no mainstream bug trackers (that I know of) actually store their databases in the version control itself. Seems like it would be easy to just store and read from the git repository, in which case all the p2p functionality is free.
ghempton··on Team Apart (YC S08) wants to eat Webex's lunch
This is the same project and we are still YC '08. The TC article is erroneous due to some confusion with the re-branding.
ghempton··on Renraku OS: Initial Release
Any particular reason that you chose the CDDL instead of a more compatible license like the GPL or, even better, MIT?
ghempton··on Partially Destructive Garbage Collection
There are already frameworks that support lazy loading object data (e.g. Hibernate).

The other part of what you described is having the runtime do the actual unloading of the objects and replacing them with stubs to conserve memory. IMO this would be an extremely difficult problem to do well. A primitive version of this already exists at a lower level than the runtime in the form of paging/swapping.

ghempton··on Ask HN: Critique this idea
Seems like donations could be put to better use than just being tunneled into another organization under a different name.
ghempton··on Minimalistic (vim-like) web browser based on Webkit
I am curious, do very many people here browse the web using only their keyboard?

I like the idea, but the keyboard-only navigation is going to be bottlenecked by the actual web page.

ghempton··on Axiis - Flex/Flash data visualization framework
All you need is the Flex SDK. It is not entirely open source, but it is free to use.
ghempton··on Finally, CSS based gradient text, no images
It is barely readable in chrome. Everything is extremely aliased and there are some artifacts.
ghempton··on Using YQL to grab HN links
Does it first convert the page to valid xhtml and then perform the xpath or does it rely on the website to be well-marked?
ghempton··on Ask HN: How does the 10x coder overcome configuration headaches?
10x coders are also 10x system admins
ghempton··on Hacking the Amazon S3 SLA
Doesn't this hack require that the service is used in an extremely constrained way, almost entirely to get a refund? You cannot employ this hack if you are using S3 in a meaningful way. Thus, you are simply getting a max 25% refund on the money you spent gaining nothing.
