ggggtez··on NP Complete 3rd Grade Math Problems (2018)
That's not NP complete. There are two major differences:

1) it fits exactly.

2) you are told there is an answer

NP complete defines a generalization of a problem. Just because a general problem is hard doesn't mean every set of numbers is the same difficulty.

The problem of course is they are overthinking it using an adult brain. Just think stupid: add toys until you go over, then remove some. Start from largest to smallest. Etc.

ggggtez··on Big oil coined ‘carbon footprints’ to blame us for their greed
Yes. I think you're trying to be sarcastic, but it's true.

Cities are designed the way they are because of cars. Roads and highways cut up the city and make neighborhoods less walkable. That wasn't an accident, but the result of decades of lobbying by oil and car industries.

People like flying to places because they are fed FOMO about travel. That has a profit motive. You may find this less convincing.

And yes, it's cheaper to use natural gas because of... Drum roll... Lobbying. Consider what heating would cost if those companies were properly paying for the environmental damage they are causing. Look at California PG&E going bankrupt after the damage from the huge forest fires they kept causing. Climate damage is no less real, but who is footing the bill?

ggggtez··on Big oil coined ‘carbon footprints’ to blame us for their greed
Arguably the only thing propping up the oil industry is lies as well... If it wasn't for the big lie that Climate Change isn't real, then the USA would have never left the Paris Accord, and would have much stricter Climate goals already in place.

So yes, lies and lobbying are propping up big oil.

ggggtez··on The Clickbaitification of Netflix
Maybe you should treat books like TV then: give it a half hour, and if you're not hooked, close it and find another.

I know many people say books take longer to enjoy, but a bad TV series can take ~12 hours per season. Most people can probably finish a novel in 12 hours.

ggggtez··on The Clickbaitification of Netflix
Interesting, I wasn't sure at first how it was adjusting the title, but it seems like it lower cases it. Interesting demo, but I think you could do better by just aggressively not clicking on videos like that to begin with. I never see that style of click bait anymore, as long as I'm logged in.
ggggtez··on The Clickbaitification of Netflix
The fact that Netflix can adaptively adjust their clickbait to suit each user is pretty stunning though. That's definitely a step beyond "one thumbnail to rule them all".
ggggtez··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
Easy, my dumb level-0 car can tell me when it's icy. And finding lane markers is one of the easiest tasks in self driving (the hard part is knowing when to ignore them).
ggggtez··on Pacaso is turning houses into corporations
I will say it gave me the idea to turn my own house into a corporation. Or maybe I should go the "my house is actually a church" route. Oh, the possibilities.
ggggtez··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
That hasn't really worked in practice. I think of Tumblr which basically stopped all growth and innovation the moment they banned porn.

The company is probably assuming they can pivot, and maybe they can, but I doubt it

ggggtez··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
I feel like Tumblr was actually growing when they made they change (which promptly killed their growth). I don't see how Only Fans is going to remain solvent without their core creators.
ggggtez··on Show HN: I built an AI art installation at home generating new pieces on the fly
I like the idea, but the art is meh.
ggggtez··on Google considers switching FLoC to a topic-based approach
I'm not exactly sure what you're doing with your math there, but I think you probably should include what you think is the current entropy of your browsing sessions...

Considering you're already aware of screen size and user agent, and other forms of fingerprinting, you should probably realize that in the pre-FLoC world, you're likely already 100% identified by numerous ad networks.

ggggtez··on Many Americans not aware of being tracked with facial recognition while shopping
I know a lot of tech people don't go to Walmart, but this also matches my experience. More brown neighborhoods have more security.

But important note: you can just leave. You don't have to let them check your bag. They aren't cops.

ggggtez··on Mathematicians are deploying algorithms to stop gerrymandering
So, you think that if you swapped R and D in the dataset, then the algorithm would always make the D win? Given that they are talking about open source tools, that should be trivial for someone to prove, if they were so inclined.

It sounds to me like you just don't like the possibility that "your side" might be doing something politically nefarious. And don't get me wrong, it's likely that both sides are gerrymandering. It just so happens that republicans have more governorships and other state power, and have had much more opportunity to draw districts.

You should be happy about the existence of mathematical tools to try to prove when someone in power is choosing their voters, instead of the voters choosing the person in power.

ggggtez··on Mathematicians are deploying algorithms to stop gerrymandering
They are, because they are releasing open source tools with the goal of stopping gerrymandering.

Just because you don't think it will work, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

ggggtez··on Mike Lindell's “packet captures” are garbage data provided by serial con-man
That only counts as a "hit" if you ignore everything in the conspiracy that was wrong.

The very first paragraph says that Trump wasn't under investigation. That was a central part of the conspiracy theory.

The other part of the conspiracy was that it was opened to dig up dirt on Trump. But the second paragraph contradicts that as well, saying it was opened because of public statements from George Papandopolous that the Trump team had dirt on Clinton, obtained from Russia.

In some sense, it would be hard to imagine that after making statements like that there wouldn't be an investigation opened. Just because an investigation happened, doesn't mean that it was political or malicious (which was the claim from Lindell).

The very wikipedia page that you linked goes over all of this, including the fact that the claims it was improper were investigated, and dismissed. You don't even have to read the whole thing, it's in the introduction.

ggggtez··on Mike Lindell's “packet captures” are garbage data provided by serial con-man
I think anyone in the DefCon Voting Machine Hacking village would agree that voting machines can be hacked...

But that's a far cry from saying that they were hacked... by China and Italy? And that you have proof, but then not provide any?

That's not political, that's just comical. It's clearly a conjob. I don't care whether you're pro or anti-trump, you've got to admit that Mike Lindell is a conman to make claims like this and have literally nothing to back it up.

ggggtez··on Mike Lindell's “packet captures” are garbage data provided by serial con-man
You're missing the fact there was a $5 million bounty to disapprove the claims. Some cyber security experts were probably hoping for an easy pay day. They probably were foolish to think he'd actually pay though. Con artists never pay when they make these big "prove me wrong" bets.
ggggtez··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
> it's not like Netflix has a game-changing technology advantage over all the companies chasing them.

You're kidding right? They have huge technological advantages in the areas of content production. Comments like this are why people are doubting this pitches ability to deliver. It doesn't really sound like you know your competitions strengths.

There is a reason it's the N in FAANG. They are a technology company first.

ggggtez··on Wealthy people are renouncing American citizenship
I think it's helpful to consider that just because you are upper class does not necessarily imply that you are rich.

I know plenty of people with upper class hobbies. I couldn't say for sure if they are rich, but they certainly don't live a lifestyle that I was ever familiar with growing up.

Even taking a year off to de-stress... Someone without financial means couldn't make those choices.

And I've known bipolar people too. They worked when they could, and went on disability when they couldn't. They were never rich. Even when they worked, they were always struggling.

I'd never met anyone taking about buying a house in the Spanish hills until becoming a techie.

ggggtez··on An Open Letter Against Apple's Privacy-Invasive Content Scanning Technology
Technically true, though I don't know why you think that capability is limited to Apple products...

https://transparencyreport.google.com/youtube-policy/feature...

ggggtez··on Years of fighting every wildfire helped fuel the Western megafires of today
From what I've read this is a red herring to get you to ignore the fact that global warming and neglect are the root causes of the wild fire issues.
ggggtez··on Wealthy people are renouncing American citizenship
You are upper class. Yes you're not rich, but you're not middle class.

The middle class American dream is a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence, 2 cars, and a dog.

You're talking about buying a half million dollar house in Spain because of a moral concern about global geopolitics. You're not middle class.

ggggtez··on Wealthy people are renouncing American citizenship
I've heard that technically renouncing us citizenship to dodge taxes is illegal. But as with most things, that's only if you get caught.
ggggtez··on Facebook executive helped Cuomo smear sex-harassment accuser: AG report
"power corrupts". Politics by nature is about assigning power to a few decision makers.

Democracy has less corruption than other systems due to separation of power, but it's foolish to think there isn't temptation to become corrupt when you think you can get away with something.

ggggtez··on Facebook executive helped Cuomo smear sex-harassment accuser: AG report
I think you are unintentionally describing another New Yorker. Trump.

I thought I should make the comment from the sibling poster more explicit.

ggggtez··on Companies address labor shortages by pursuing current or former prisoners
As far as I know, defund the police isn't proposed as a solution to this problem. Police don't run the prisons. Maybe the two are connected, due to high incarceration rates being used to balance budgets, but afaik there are other solutions proposed like simply ending private prisons.
ggggtez··on Companies address labor shortages by pursuing current or former prisoners
Prison labor is the rule rather than the exception. In many states, prisons are also run by for-profit companies.

Occasionally it's mentioned on some show like Jon Oliver, but there isn't the political willpower to solve this clear abuse since it would cost more money.

ggggtez··on Why don't tech companies pay their engineers to stay?
Your anecdote proves the point. If your friend was paid more, they might not have left.

But in essence what you highlight also shows why companies don't pay to keep people to stay. Instead of paying someone money who hates their job, they might prefer paying less money to a new grad who isn't burnt out on their culture yet.

ggggtez··on Why don't tech companies pay their engineers to stay?
It's not sufficient to make 1% more money. If it's not a 20%+ increase, you might as well bide your time. This means the first, lower paying job, is sticky. Otherwise you could leave instantly at every better offer without penalty to long term prospects.

And even for those brilliant people who can get it on the first try, you're taking about 2 months minimum to go through the interview process. If you're someone who doesn't like taking risks, that's a tall order until you've become convinced there is no path to promotion within your company.
