gggggg5··on Glovo lays off 6% of staff following fresh fine from Spanish government
This would all be much more reasonable if literature genuinely supported lockdowns, but in reality it's a toss-up.

Studies looking at quality-adjusted life years have not discovered a meaningful COVID-related benefit from the lockdowns. The most charitable takes will note that lockdowns did indeed drastically reduce traffic deaths, but it's hard to view that as a genuine pro-lockdown argument.

gggggg5··on Glovo lays off 6% of staff following fresh fine from Spanish government
The pandemic didn't kill those businesses, that's just straight up dishonest. Government enforced lockdowns killed those businesses.

Why is it such a pain? You can print hundreds of good enough fake IDs every day with a sub $1000 printer.

gggggg5··on Glovo lays off 6% of staff following fresh fine from Spanish government
Do you think the government can't be criticised for their covid response?
gggggg5··on Glovo lays off 6% of staff following fresh fine from Spanish government
>So its probably the most successful left wing government in West Europe in the last 40 yeras for that reason. They were able to pass major reforms ranging from the labor reform that now protects 'contractors' to raising the minimum wage two times, from rent control to the new minimum income law among many others. I totally did not expect that they would be able to succeed in that much. It was quite a surprise.

This same government pretty much bankrupted most small restaurants in the country, with many only surviving thanks to Glovo and the likes. Win some, lose some, I guess.

gggggg5··on U.S. No Fly list publicly shared on a hacking forum, government investigating
In the case of this particular forum, it's primarily because they're children.
gggggg5··on U.S. No Fly list publicly shared on a hacking forum, government investigating
It's not.

There's the raidforums indictment, but as I remember it does not directly address the "intent to defraud" question wrt access device fraud https://www.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/1493586/downl...

FWIW I think a bigger reason for lack of card payments would be the chargeback rates.

gggggg5··on Ukrainian soldiers arrive in Britain for tank training
> However the UK wont want any damaged ones getting into the hands of the Russians as the Chobham armour is one of the many advantages that the Challenger 2 has over the T series tanks.

This is utter nonsense, Russia simply lacks the manufacturing capability to produce such armour. Having access to a sample of British composite armour will not and can not help them at all, except perhaps in developing munitions to reliably penetrate it.

gggggg5··on Google exec fired after female boss groped him at drunken bash, suit says
Are you saying that Adam Savage had his bank accounts closed?

As far as I can tell, that was only a civil case and entirely different from the parent commenters story.

gggggg5··on Google exec fired after female boss groped him at drunken bash, suit says
How would background check services get hold of this information before trial? Were you arrested? I'm sorry, but based on my experience with these systems, this sounds like a fake story.

Even the detail about your bank accounts being closed doesn't add up at all.

gggggg5··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
>However, US has such capabilities, and I think the results would still be very similar with the only difference that ballistic warhead (or its parts if disintegrated) will land not that far from the target when intercepted after the apex.

When it comes to ballistic missile interceptions, they tend to occur (if they occur) at a minimum of tens of kilometers from/above the target.

Ballistic missile interceptions are fundamentally different from cruise missile interceptions too, cruise missiles are often disabled by shrapnel from the interceptor merely exploding near the missile. This isn't a great approach for terminal phase ballistic missiles, so for those you mostly see kinetic interceptors that actually have to directly hit their target. In the case of a successful interception, you're unlikely to see anything but disintegration.

gggggg5··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
Has there been a single documented interception of an Iskander ballistic missile? Iskander-K cruise missiles have almost certainly been intercepted, yeah.
gggggg5··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
Cruise missiles, not ballistic missiles.
gggggg5··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
It's also about the wrong kind of missiles, cruise missiles and not ballistic missiles.
gggggg5··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
I don't think there's been a single documented interception of a ballistic missile in Ukraine.

Cruise missiles are an entirely different thing and largely irrelevant when it comes to delivery of nuclear weapons.

gggggg5··on Facebook drains users' cellphone batteries intentionally says ex-employee
I would think that facebook being nonchalant about battery usage has far more in common with cupholder diameters than with seatbelt designs.
gggggg5··on Facebook drains users' cellphone batteries intentionally says ex-employee
No, neither of those are even remotely comparable.
gggggg5··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
Are we talking about boost phase, midcourse or terminal phase defense?

In all of these cases, a successful intercept will happen tens if not thousands of kilometers from the target.

A boost phase interception would happen above the launch area. A midcourse intercept would essentially happen in space and a terminal intercept would happen at the edge of the atmosphere.

I'd recommend reading about Aegis, THAAD and GMD. Also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_missile_flight_phase...

Of course there are also stealth bombers and cruise missiles. In the case of stealth bombers, you either shoot them before the bombs are dropped or you don't (Barring some extremely conveniently located point defenses, like C-RAM)

Cruise missiles? Shot down by conventional air defenses hundreds of kilometers from the target if terrain allows.

Hypersonic cruise missiles? Maybe shot down by conventional air defenses.

>they kill people though at their scale just by the fact that people can't call 911.

In the same way that everyone who drives a car is a murderer, a ridiculous appeal to emotion.

gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
What significant local physical presence does Apple have in Thailand? They're setting up a factory there, kicking that out would hurt Thailand way more than it would hurt Apple.
gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
How else could it be? It's simply not possible that all worldviews are equal. It's undoubtedly true that my view of the world is simply better than someone else's and vice-versa.
gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
> If Apple breaks laws isn't that what Governments should do?

It depends.

gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
I was specifically suggesting doing this for Apple-bound communications, not for all traffic. In that situation blocking private relay would just break app store and other important functionality, rendering the devices borderline useless.

> And if you really think authoritarian governments are going to choose iPhones over control, well…

lol, Thailand doesn't even block VPNs. You really think they'd do something as drastic as banning Apple devices over this?

There are many authoritarian countries were banning iPhones would simply be unimaginable, there's no way they'd even think about doing that in places like Russia.

gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
There are significant costs associated with something as visible as banning the sales of Apple devices. Governments are certainly capable of doing this, but the cost-benefit analysis does not necessarily add up.
gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
There are fairly successful companies like Telegram and Signal, who are aggressively using technical measures to evade censorship.

Apple certainly could do this.

gggggg5··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
From a purely technical perspective, they could just force private relay for all Apple-bound traffic. Thailand would have to choose between working iPhones and blocking private relay.
gggggg5··on Digitec Galaxus now displays warranty score and return rate
>Why ?

Is this a serious question? Why should online payments be so difficult that it makes sense to spend even 2 minutes getting out of the door and walking to a store directly across the street? You autofill your card information and click "pay".

>The really sorry state of things are people ordering toilet paper &co in same day delivery on amazon because they can't bother walking 5 min to the closest store

But why? It's cheaper on Amazon.
