ggg9990··on The Finkbeiner Test: A Tool for Writing About Women in their Professions
Another thing I’ve noticed is articles using large headshots of women for companies where they could use product photos. With men it’s much rarer... they even prefer to run cheesy graphics of “AI” instead of headshots.
ggg9990··on Facebook stock drops more than 20% after revenue forecast misses
I would think it is much more than 20,000 in a country of 1 billion people with such tight content controls.

Alice, Bob, and Carol all hate each other. A politician of yesteryear had to forge some compromise between them to get the support of any two. Today, you can tell Alice that you'll kill Bob and Carol, Bob that you'll kill Alice and Carol, and Carol that you'll kill Alice and Bob, and get all three of their votes.
ggg9990··on The World Economy Runs on GPS. It Needs a Backup Plan
> what country has the budget to knock out twenty four satellites in quick succession?

The only countries between whom a war would be a globally consequential event: the United States, China, and Russia.

ggg9990··on Facebook stock drops more than 20% after revenue forecast misses
The overfocus on Facebook hides the much more important and sobering point — if you tell someone exactly what they want to hear, they can be induced to vote for you, which calls into question the real long-term value of democracy as a politics architecture.

A lot of their security/policy work is hiring tons of humans to fix things. For example they are hiring an additional 10,000 content moderators. That will obviously impact profitability.
ggg9990··on Why the iPhone can’t compete in India
India is different from Romania
ggg9990··on Why the iPhone can’t compete in India
The people in India who own an iPhone almost all read English perfectly.
ggg9990··on SEC Charges Failed Fyre Festival Founder and Others with $27.4M Offering Fraud
But at some point, it's not worth trying anymore, like a house which is 90% on fire.
ggg9990··on Apple releases software fix for MacBook Pro slowdown
They had the issues with Steve Jobs but they also had Steve Jobs to save their ass.
ggg9990··on Apple releases software fix for MacBook Pro slowdown
Yikes, pretty bad showing by Apple here. They don't have the leeway that they did when they had Steve Jobs... they have tremendous brand loyalty, but will need to be more careful in the future.
ggg9990··on Why touchscreens in cars don’t work
OK, if you cook enough to use two ovens maybe the programmable oven is suitable for you.
ggg9990··on How tech's richest plan to save themselves after the apocalypse
I’ve read so many stories about these plans and they all have the same flaw... nothing stops an ex-Navy SEAL from taking all of this stuff from them when money is worth nothing (as it will be in an apocalypse)
ggg9990··on McDonald's Says Goodbye Cashiers, Hello Kiosks
All these unemployed people are not going to crawl under a bridge and die. When people are hungry and see people with food, they kill them and take their food. We don’t really have any plan for this yet and it will seem like a distant scenario until we are in it.
ggg9990··on The Transformative Power of Suffering
Could you have pushed one arm up and rotated the bar to one side of you? What should one do if one calls for help and it doesn’t come?
ggg9990··on Why touchscreens in cars don’t work
What’s the model?
ggg9990··on Why touchscreens in cars don’t work
How much is my car UI really going to improve over 10 years? Without some kind of revenue model, the manufacturer wants you to upgrade, and there isn't really anything that's actually useful that can ship post-build without installed hardware (eg blindspot warning, rearview camera)
ggg9990··on Why touchscreens in cars don’t work
Unless the touchscreen is fully redundant, I cannot imagine it being worth the loss of physical buttons for the 99% of times you are warming up a pizza slice for 5 minutes.
ggg9990··on Why touchscreens in cars don’t work
Touchscreens are for UI that needs to reconfigure constantly -- i.e., for multiple-purpose devices. Smartphones are great examples. One minute it's a restaurant review guide, then it's a messaging device, then it's a compass, then it's a camera. When you need more buttons, they appear, when you need fewer buttons, they disappear.

A car is largely a single purpose device. You always have the same few set of things you want to do in the car. Climate, Radio, Maps, etc. A touchscreen is a boneheaded interface for this device.

Imagine if your on-off lightswitches were touchscreens. If your stovetop interface was a touchscreen. If your refrigerator ice dispenser was a touchscreen (I've seen this). Completely moronic, every single one of them.

ggg9990··on Why touchscreens in cars don’t work
I had to get a cheaper car than I wanted/could afford to avoid aggravating and accident-inducing touchscreen technology.
ggg9990··on Confessions of an Ex-Prosecutor (2016)
If every case going to trial would cost an unreal amount of money, then the solution is to either reduce everyone's Constitutional rights, or do things differently, not browbeat defendants into a Sophie's Choice between their rights and a 10x-disproportionate jail term.
ggg9990··on Study of Thousands of Dropbox Projects Reveals How Successful Teams Collaborate
Imagine you have a folder in your Dropbox with 237 subfolders, and each of those subfolders has a certain number of files in it. The largest folder has 1,132 files, for example, the second largest has 916, the third-largest has 771, etc.

Then imagine you have a second folder with 117 subfolders with another pattern like above.

Now imagine that the first folder structure matches a torrent of embarrassing pornography and the second appears to be a superset of a project published to GitHub under your name (i.e. with some directories being gitignored)

ggg9990··on Study of Thousands of Dropbox Projects Reveals How Successful Teams Collaborate
As a Dropbox paying customer and never having heard of the Northwestern Institutional Review Board it's not them that pisses me off. I haven't reconsidered my usage of Dropbox for a very long time, since I made the decision to stay with them after their no-password fiasco. Today is the first day in a long time.
ggg9990··on Nvidia Can Artificially Create Slow Motion That Is Better Than a 300K FPS Camera
The soap opera effect is due to very high frame rates breaking the fourth wall and making it clear that the thing you are watching is horribly faked. You can notice that the effect is not nearly so severe on non-staged content (sports, wildlife, news)
ggg9990··on Confessions of an Ex-Prosecutor (2016)
"Clog the docket"? Why isn't the court system appropriately scaled to give each defendant their Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial? Because fuck them, that's why.
ggg9990··on Confessions of an Ex-Prosecutor (2016)
> The 20 (that seemed high to him for a 2 year plea) is a fuck you for going to trial

So you get an 18-year "fuck you" for invoking your Sixth Amendment right to a trial by an impartial jury of your peers?

ggg9990··on Study of Thousands of Dropbox Projects Reveals How Successful Teams Collaborate
The harm is that 1) data which seems anonymized can be de-anonymized due to carelessness or advances in analytical techniques, and 2) it’s mine. I have laptops in my house for example that I’ve not used in years and will never use again. That doesn’t give you the right to steal them even if there’s no explicit “harm” to me.
ggg9990··on The Children of Flint Were Not ‘Poisoned’
Interesting that the article has to frame the reason for combating bad facts with the idea that the children are harmed by being called poisoned, instead of just saying that the facts are wrong. Otherwise they’d be vulnerable to accusations of racism/classism/heartlessness/bigotry.
ggg9990··on Someone Uploaded What Look to Be Apple’s Internal iPhone Repair Videos
The cable thing is completely different and a clear cash grab by Apple. I mean, the Lightning cable is way better than Micro USB, but why it costs $20 is just because Apple knows people will pay that much.
ggg9990··on Why Some Civil War Soldiers Glowed in the Dark (2012)
There’s a lot about the Civil War that can only be found in books or newspapers that aren’t searchable online. Many of the newspapers of the time are long gone with no searachle archive.
