gfosco··on Booting a 486 from floppy with the most up-to-date stable Linux kernel
I still have it, but almost everything else in life is fighting against letting me explore it.
gfosco··on Transcribed police scanners in real-time
Cooperative community editing, genius-style, would be perfect. Big events would lead to incredibly accurate transcripts.
gfosco··on Signal app downloads spike as US protesters seek message encryption
To make an apple pie from scratch, first you must create the universe. :)
gfosco··on Space Plane: Mysterious US military aircraft launches
The way I see it, it's not about you and me, but humanity. Humanity needs to step forth from Earth, to avoid future destruction. Until humanity is space-faring and multi-planetary, it is vulnerable to total erasure.
gfosco··on ISS Docking Simulation
I think what you're considering inverted is your relative pitch/yaw/roll from the target. The target isn't <0.2 from 0, it's <0.2 from perfect alignment. Not having an indicator of translation speed is kinda lame, but I wound up docking with a total drift of 0.1 across all green numbers. Seemed like an achievement but was kinda let down by the success page, lol.
gfosco··on In Praise of AutoHotKey
I remember back in 2005-2007, using AHK to make data entry way more efficient, at a few different companies. It's also great for macros in video games.
gfosco··on Extremely disillusioned with technology. Please help
That's generally an unpopular and unwelcome opinion here, but I agree with you 100%. edit: and i'll happily take those downvotes, they are delicious thank you.
gfosco··on Show HN: Caddy 2
I really like Caddy and use it for general side projects. Super simple setup, handles all the LetsEncrypt certificates for me, can be running different apps on different paths.
gfosco··on Mark Zuckerberg Asserts Control of Facebook, Pushing Aside Dissenters
No I think we're really missing each other somehow... Board members don't usually work at the company. They don't have Workplace accounts, or departments. The headline that this 'asserts control' is click-bait.
gfosco··on Mark Zuckerberg Asserts Control of Facebook, Pushing Aside Dissenters
Sure, he gets input from all the board members, but he is unconstrained, he controls the majority of voting shares. The headline is not qualified.
gfosco··on Mark Zuckerberg Asserts Control of Facebook, Pushing Aside Dissenters
Considering that he alone has the majority of the votes, I don't see how any of these board member departures change anything (nor does the linked text make any attempt at explaining this.)
gfosco··on Some defiant US churches plan Easter services, ignoring public health guidelines
Lowe's and Home Depot are open, Sherwin-Williams paint stores are open, the gun stores are open... People have different views on what is essential, to them, and nationally we don't have any agreement on what is and isn't essential or vital. There are many exceptions. Yes, to many people, their church is a vital service.
gfosco··on Some defiant US churches plan Easter services, ignoring public health guidelines
They can have services and still respect social distancing just like the supermarkets. Let's not get crazy here with the authoritarianism.
gfosco··on Bosch develops rapid test for Covid-19
The full quote does one extra thing, it implies that buying 100+ of these machines is totally expected.
gfosco··on Why Is Facebook Not in the Cloud Business?
It's still actively developed. https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server
gfosco··on Why Is Facebook Not in the Cloud Business?
The difference is that Parse ran on AWS. In my opinion, the real reason Facebook isn't in the cloud business, and why Parse was eventually shuttered, is that Facebook will never allow external code to run anywhere in their network.
gfosco··on MSPaint in JavaScript
My wife creates prints for our fabric printer, and the PSD files are often larger than 2GB, containing for example a 55" wide image that is 6+ yards long, at 150-300 dpi with a bunch of layers. Somehow her low-specced 2015 Macbook Pro 13" has handled this type of work just fine, as long as there's enough free space for the scratch disk.
gfosco··on Trump’s 2021 budget drowns science agencies in red ink, again
When we're 23 trillion in debt, maybe the government should be reducing funding for low chance of return research too..
gfosco··on Trump’s 2021 budget drowns science agencies in red ink, again
Private sector: This is your time. The free market has been waiting for you. You don't need the government to do this.
gfosco··on SoftRAM 95 (1996)
It was a great scam, and I have no doubt it was totally intentional. They still made money. It was a placebo, and yet people would call in to the QVC show and talk about how much faster their computer is after installing it.
gfosco··on SoftRAM 95 (1996)
$2,000 from Syncronys and $2,000 from the attorneys fees (which totaled $35,000). That got me my first car, and a lesson... The attorneys always win.
gfosco··on SoftRAM 95 (1996)
I thought I was the first to file a class action lawsuit against the makers of this in December 1995, but now I see someone else filed about a month earlier. The "driver" files were just renamed Windows files. I was 16 years old, so my dads name was used. I had provided the technical proof behind the claim, so I even got part of the attorney's fees. gfosco··on Oxide Computer Company: Initial boot sequence
That's very fair and I apologize for the snark.
gfosco··on Oxide Computer Company: Initial boot sequence
It immediately went from #1 to like #15 behind comments that obviously do not have a lot of votes. Take a guess why. HN fuckery afoot as usual.
gfosco··on Oxide Computer Company: Initial boot sequence
This was the top comment by a long shot and is all of a sudden way down the bottom... hmmmmmm.
gfosco··on Twitter for Mac is incapable of accepting certain letters in the password field
Rolling back worked for me, but the workaround is using the USB-C to HDMI dongle. (and I think I needed the dongle to downgrade.)
gfosco··on Twitter for Mac is incapable of accepting certain letters in the password field
Not surprising any longer... There's a whole class of Mac Mini's (including the latest revision) where if you install Catalina, the HDMI port dies.
gfosco··on Zuckerberg asserts Facebook stands for free expression
It was a good speech. Reasoned and thoughtful, providing historical precedents, and examining the benefits and risks unique to global internet platforms. Can't say I agreed with everything, but on the whole, I think it's a great direction. Worth a watch, or a read when the text comes out.
gfosco··on Joint Statement on the GNU Project
They shouldn't invite you over for dinner again, but it ends there. They don't get to come for your job, your career, your legacy.
gfosco··on Facebook Now Allows Politicians to Lie in Paid Ads
Look at the level of effort and defense you needed to go to in order to try and explain this stuff away. We disagree on a few things, like, I do think it was an admission of corruption, but I agree that much of this can never / will never be litigated and certified as such in a court. The point wasn't to debate the eventual court decision, my point was that only in the Biden case does this type of evidence even exist. In the Trump case, there's only mind-reading and rumor.
