Actually, in this situation: Discord.
gfosco··on Where Have All the Sex Scenes Gone?
I didn't mention nudity, so yeah I'm including non-nude scenes where that's obviously what's going on and it's not adding anything useful to the story.
gfosco··on Where Have All the Sex Scenes Gone?
The violence often relates to the plot, and drives the story forward. The sex scenes generally add nothing.
gfosco··on Where Have All the Sex Scenes Gone?
They've moved to TV shows... Hard to watch any (American) Netflix series without an unnecessary sex scene every 6-8 minutes.
gfosco··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Are you sure about that? I see it going a lot more like this:

Stage 1: Amazing new project lights the world on fire.

Stage 2: Woke-scolds achieve 10% of contribution.

Stage 3: Multiple woke-scold instigated controversies lead to the creators cowering in Twitter fear and implementing a CoC.

Stage 4: CoC is used against everyone, but twice as hard against the creators.

*(satire or future) Stage 5: CoC updated to require vaccine passport for contribution.

gfosco··on Chia Coin Miners Are Reselling Used SSDs as New
Important distinction between chia drives used for plotting versus storage. The intensive write use is during plotting and would be on the smallest and fastest drives, in the 1-4TB range. Personal experience, I generated almost 400TB of plots and never had a drive go bad or experience any major performance issues. The massive storage arrays barely get touched, small reads only.

Likewise I will take this comment with an equal amount of salt.
gfosco··on Docker Desktop no longer free for large companies
As someone who went from the PA suburbs and small IT shops (where 75k was a premium salary) to the SF startup scene and Facebook, one of the observations that has stuck with me was the incredible cheapness of my wealthy tech peers. It's hard to explain unless you've been around people who do a whole lot more with a whole lot less.

I've run up against that wall several times over my career. Going around them does occasionally work out, but not always.

Little early to be making this claim... give it a chance to set in.
gfosco··on Is Ivermectin for Covid-19 Based on Fraudulent Research?
The comment I replied to was pointing out how this article is cherry-picking a single study to argue with, and I agreed... There is quite a bit of other evidence to support its use, such as [1]. I think it's pretty well summarized by MedpageToday: "Findings are positive, but critics still want a large randomized controlled trial" [2]

gfosco··on Is Ivermectin for Covid-19 Based on Fraudulent Research?
I did not say that... I just said it was possible. Personally, I think people should be listening to their doctors and not the television.
gfosco··on Is Ivermectin for Covid-19 Based on Fraudulent Research?
I'm not sure if the author considered that even if this study was completely bogus, Ivermectin can still be a positive part of covid treatment. I have heard many good things about Ivermectin from several different countries including Africa, but had not heard about this study.
gfosco··on Sovereign writers and Substack
They are however outrageous to the far-left journos at mainstream publications, which is why there's so much attention focused on Substack right now. Trump won't go anywhere that he doesn't get to own a significant portion of the business, so he'll have to build his own site (which it is already reported that he is doing.)
gfosco··on Gab Has Been Breached
The only part of the spectrum missing from my group chats is the communists. It's just so obvious that you're not taking your own advice.
gfosco··on Gab Has Been Breached
Is it really unthinkable to you that someone could've had a great past 12 months? I'm guessing you wear two masks.
gfosco··on Gab Has Been Breached
It's odd to me that you think I've insulated myself with only people that think like me. It's like you don't know me at all. I'm literally the person who reached out and had 60 different meetings with all sorts there, and continued to maintain bipartisan group chats. Try to realize that you appear to be the one who thinks I'm a caricature.
gfosco··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
Lol. Whatever you say, clueless dude. I assume you still work for the company which is responsible for, what is it, two-thirds of all child porn reports online? Yes that was it... 12 Million cases in 2018. It's also the premier destination for live streamed violence... But, gotta stay focused on attacking those evil Trump supporters right?
gfosco··on Gab Has Been Breached
With that definition, would you think unlimited spam is also ok? Most likely you got reported by the community and picked up by the same sort of algorithm that exists on every other platform.
gfosco··on Gab Has Been Breached
You know pretty much nothing about me, unsurprisingly. I certainly don't need your pity, lol, this last year has been one of the best.

Hi HN! Great feedback here, as always.

I can talk about the commit, and I can talk about the article.

We were getting crushed with scaling from 3M to 30M visits a month, and every day was a 16 hour day. The site was falling over on a daily basis, and the performance of the home feed was atrocious. The APM traces were full of loops. The muting and blocking features were incurring tons of additional queries. As I remember it, one night I decided to write a SQL query to replace it. I believe I thought the values were already being sanitized, but I have no problem agreeing that I should've looked into that further and made sure. I'm not a rails dev, and I'm generally negative towards rails and ActiveRecord. I wrote SQL for many years in the past, and as the folks who went through my stackoverflow saw, I am not unaware of the importance of sanitizing user input. I've written much code that properly sanitized user input, in various languages.

It's really easy to imagine that Gab is a large company, considering the breadth of their platform and products, but you'd be shocked and impressed. It's still really early days, like this is only Chapter 2 for us.. we're growing and will keep getting better.

This article is interesting to me for other reasons though: 1. there's been no confirmation this commit was related to anything that has happened. and 2. the person who reached out to Ars with the story, a link to the commit and a quote, is a former co-worker with a personal grudge. I can only imagine the glee with which he wrote that email.

For the last 2 days we were being extorted for nearly half a million dollars. I received a death threat today, first one ever. I think we're doing something important. Go ahead with your code critiques.

Have a great day,

Fosco

They were well prepared for this, with what must've taken months of planning. They added the payment option, got banned, filed the lawsuit and published their 1984 parody ad, all within 24 hours.

Thanks for this elitist mind-reading and fear-mongering.
gfosco··on QAnon Was a Theory on a Message Board. Now It’s Headed to Congress
QAnon is so mild, it's bonkers the coverage it's getting. The whole thing revolves around the idea of "the patriots are in control, trust the plan, justice is coming, enjoy the show"... It's like a sedative, and harmless in my opinion. Whoever is LARPing as Q hasn't even posted in August, but the media is amping up coverage and increasing search interest (why?).

How do you hold these 2 conflicting things in your head: 1) It was okay for the entire establishment (including elected officials) and media to spread (and claim as fact) conspiracy theories about the President being involved with Russians with zero evidence of such, and 2) It's not okay for random people to organize and share memes about an alleged gov't conspiracy?

gfosco··on Facebook hate-speech boycott had little effect on revenue
Considering this, was the tech and other media coverage of the "boycott" fair or accurate? Really looks like it was agenda-driven activism itself.
