gfodor··on Grok
Always love it when someone gives away a gift and it’s not enough for people.
gfodor··on How Figma's databases team lived to tell the scale
Honestly it's depressing that I remember doing this same thing more than a decade ago and we still have to spend developer cycles on this nonsense in 2024.
gfodor··on Figure 01 robot demos its OpenAI integration
The bottleneck here is the multimodal vision processing, at least if my experience building this kind of thing is any indication. Afaik Groq has not demonstrated the speeds they have for this. (Obviously they'll be better than OpenAI, but it still may be slow enough to leave people disappointed.)
gfodor··on Midjourney bans all Stability AI employees over alleged data scraping
Which companies?
gfodor··on Cystic fibrosis breakthrough has given patients a chance to live longer
I have CF, and my whole life I avoided things like CF communities explicitly because I felt these ties to the disease would lead to a crisis in my life if it was ever something I could stop centering my life around.
gfodor··on Plasticity: CAD for Artists
I love this app.
gfodor··on Sweden Is a NATO Member
Taken together what you wrote here is a convenient framework for all blame of any possible nuclear exchange to be entirely disconnected from NATO.
gfodor··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
Nothing wrong with being ignorant. Unless you’re claiming you’re not ignorant and just accept the memes as non-biased. In which yeah your brain would be pretty ravaged if that were the case (tho I’ve never liked Musk’s characterization personally)
gfodor··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
Yes, you probably also have been led to think that these memes are just "being normal" but these are deliberate changes to the language which originated in academic programs of critical theory. See for example: https://cssp.org/2020/03/recognizing-race-in-language-why-we...
gfodor··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
No, there is no fallacy here. You’re just ignorant. There are several signifying phrases and terms used here that are commonly used by people who have absorbed critical theory ideology.
gfodor··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
You’re just not clued into the lingo. This person is an ideologue and is trying to hide it somewhat but is failing to completely omit the use of language that reveals the leftist ideology they have been swimming in.

Few people on HN can read this kind of critique without short circuiting but it’s a valid critique and I would bet a good sum that if you looked into this author you’d find lots more direct evidence of promulgation of leftist ideology (critical theory)

gfodor··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
You can start by noticing the explicit capitalization of the adjective “Black”

There are others but that is enough to bucket it in as someone who is dabbling in leftist memetics at a minimum

gfodor··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
Capitalizing Black, and using the word “privileged” to describe individuals without specifying what kind of privilege
gfodor··on OpenAI: 'The New York Times Paid Someone to Hack Us'
Lots of comments but nobody seems to be asking the obvious question: what kind of bug?

If the "bug" is "we had a bad system prompt" ok then this is stupid. If the bug was "turns out if you pass a secret argument to a HTTP endpoint you can skip the system prompt" then this is a hack.

gfodor··on Launch HN: Retell AI (YC W24) – Conversational Speech API for Your LLM
ty!
gfodor··on Launch HN: Retell AI (YC W24) – Conversational Speech API for Your LLM
Ah thank you! What's the lowest latency option you have found so far?
gfodor··on Launch HN: Retell AI (YC W24) – Conversational Speech API for Your LLM
Can you share what you're doing for TTS? Is it a proprietary fully pretrained in-house model, a fine tuned open source one, or a commercially licensed one?
gfodor··on What Was Sora Trained On? Creatives Demand Answers
This will be a major point of contention if machine learning continues to go the way it’s going.

In the future if the Turing test is fully passed I think morality will boil down to preferring humans if and only if it’s a situation of competing scarcities.

In the case of “showing pictures to computer people”, showing pictures to a computer doesn’t prevent you from showing it to a human so this framework imply no moral justification for a human preference.

gfodor··on Sora could ruin peoples lives
Now is the best time to have kids. The future rules, if you know what’s coming.
gfodor··on Sora could ruin peoples lives
If you knew it was going to replace their jobs, it would be surprising to me if you’d have decided to not do it.

The main thing to do would be to give people a heads up so they can try to get out in front of it. Which is something AI companies are doing at every level.

gfodor··on The AI bullshit singularity
I mean if you think about it for 5 minutes sure. But look at what bluesky is doing for example around decentralized moderation. It’s not really been an important problem in the global sense to get cryptographic attestations by neural parties for asserting what they have witnessed or analyzed for evidence of falsehoods
gfodor··on The AI bullshit singularity
No, you can filter bullshit by trusted public keys. This isn’t a new problem. It just now needs to go mainstream.
gfodor··on Sora could ruin peoples lives
A lot more of this to come, but unfortunately it’s inevitable because the universe affords universal learning algorithms.
gfodor··on The AI bullshit singularity
Good cryptographic solutions exist for these problems
gfodor··on The future of Mozilla Hubs
The team that build Hubs was also part of the team that built AltspaceVR.
gfodor··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
I just started playing with modal.com and so far it seems good. I haven't run anything in production yet, so YMMV.
gfodor··on LLRT: A low-latency JavaScript runtime from AWS
Gross.
gfodor··on When "letting it crash" is not enough
This reminds me of Kafka Streams
gfodor··on Apple Vision Pro – Why Monitor Replacement Is Ridiculous
this article doesn't even analyze AVP, it analyzes a quest pro and 'extrapolates'
gfodor··on Vision Pro teardown part 2: What’s the display resolution?
You're confused. Vision Pro is a true AR/MR device. It uses AR passthrough. A lot of people for a long time have assumed there's some inherent reason people would never accept passthrough AR devices. A few people like myself have been consistent saying that's not the case, that passthrough AR is actually the right solution. Vision Pro is just the first version of what I expect to be a long line of passthrough AR devices from Apple.
