getsat··on Hello World: Windows 10 Available on July 29
Will there be a way to buy a digital download of it?

I recently wanted to bootcamp my Macbook Pro to play some games Windows-only games. I went to Microsoft's website and looked at the options for buying Windows 8. The only options were a retail DVD which would be shipped (and I don't have a DVD drive) or to upgrade from Windows Vista/Windows 7 which I had neither of.

I ended up pirating it because I couldn't figure out how to get a legitimate copy that I could actually install. :(

I haven't used Windows since XP, and 8 is really nice. I'm legitimately excited for Windows 10 especially due to all the open sourcing of .NET-related code recently.

getsat··on Real time bidding in Erlang (2012)
Were these guys a very small shop? Any info on which exchanges they bidded on? The RTB company I worked at was considered "small" and we were handling around 300,000 requests/second with 15ms max time per request spent in our systems between just Google and Facebook's exchanges.
getsat··on Dear Paul
It's more like being mad at the owner of a particular newspaper for allowing/turning a blind eye to/actively encouraging certain kinds of content to be printed in said newspaper.

Your analogy would fit if Zed was directing his post at the creator of the "online forum" in general.

getsat··on Ask HN: Software developers, What happened when you were fired/laid off?
I got a new job within a week making 15k/year more (this was in San Francisco). It was actually a good thing, in retrospect.

getsat··on The Sound of TED: A Case for Distaste
TEDx might be largely garbage, but it has this talk which actually changed my life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0yGdNEWdn0

Strangely, this guy does not even promote his book. His book completely changed my mental approach to language learning. I highly recommend it to anyone who is learning a language.

getsat··on Europe Is Struggling to Foster a Startup Culture
jbob2000, you are hellbanned.
getsat··on Microsoft Band SDK Release and Band Studio Introduction
Okay, this is NOT what I expected when I clicked on the link. With all the crazy MS news lately, I honestly thought they were putting out a competitor to Logic Studio with a full SDK.
getsat··on Ask HN: How do I get my first contracting client?
>which is good because later I did consulting in Defense and NSA projects

If you work in the adult film industry, you can't work for the government/get security clearances?

getsat··on Using BitTorrent with Amazon S3
Could you elaborate on this? I'm not familiar with Bittorrent's protocol. Can a regular HTTP server (say, nginx) be used as a web seed without any software in front of it translating the Bitorrent protocol requests into a regular HTTP request?
getsat··on Engineers of addiction
There are slot machines in convenience stores, restaurants, and airports in the state of Nevada (and not just near Vegas).

Yep.

If the website has an API, just use it directly. If not...

Load up the website in question, open your browser's debug tools' network tab, and perform each action that you'd like to be able to programatically do. Record the destination host/path, request type, and all the params that can be sent to it. Then, implement a function in your language of choice for each action that you want to be able to do (some actions require multiple requests).

Package up the functions into a class/library/whatever and extract out common functionality. Then post it on HN for lots of karma and feedback.

For a simple starter task, create an account on http://www.nationstates.net and write a bot which logs in each day and randomly picks a choice for each decision you are asked to make for your country.

getsat··on Samsung is imploding in China
Probably also HTC and other "also ran" companies.
getsat··on Why Do We Play Video Games That Feel Like Work?
I can totally see this. :)
getsat··on Why Do We Play Video Games That Feel Like Work?
My vice is the Demon's Souls/Dark Souls games. As one Steam review put it:

    >hours of "WHY DID I BUY THIS GAME?"
    >seconds of "I AM A GOD"
getsat··on Fractal Lab
The lip smacking and semi-whispering is very annoying to me.

getsat··on PM of Singapore Shares His C++ Sudoku Solver Source Code
I feel this. I just bounced from the USA for east asia permanently and couldn't be happier. No guns, no crime, peaceful people, no fear of burglary/mugging/fraud, better food/diet, lower taxes. I am still trying to get used to leaving my helmet sitting in plain view on my scooter, unlocked, for hours at a time.

My life now is the antithesis of my life in San Francisco (worst city I have ever lived in overall), and I couldn't be happier.

getsat··on Names of the chemical elements in Chinese
It's also interesting to note that the traditional characters are called "standard" characters in Taiwan.
getsat··on Ex-Goldman Programmer Guilty of Stealing Code – WSJ
Well, stealing source code from your former employer right as you start a gig paying 3x as much is going to result in some personal and professional ramifications. What he did was unethical and stupid.

When I was learning Erlang (2009), I did benefit from some of his tutorials on OTP, though.

getsat··on How the language you speak changes your view of the world
>Could you expand on this?

Chinese is objectively quite bad in terms of language design. It's elaborated on extensively in this rather lengthy article: http://pinyin.info/readings/texts/moser.html

getsat··on What will C++17 be?
I see. Thanks for the reply.
getsat··on What will C++17 be?
Why is uniform call syntax a good addition? What is the benefit?

I only ever remember hearing of one programming language supporting it, and I can't even remember what it is. Maybe it was Nim?

getsat··on Amazon Finally Discloses Cloud Services Sales, Showing 49% Jump
Shillways. Your comment history is amusing.
getsat··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
Cool concept, I didn't realise this existed. Can you run Hadoop and friends under this? I've worked at companies with over 500 servers in a Hadoop cluster and literally never once heard about anything other than using Oracle's JRE aside from one proposal to use OpenJDK which was shot down pretty quickly.
getsat··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
Go and modern C++ are both quite a bit more terse than Java. They also produce binaries which don't necessarily require a runtime to be available on every server (just ABI compatibility).

(I have no horse in this race, I am just writing what I think the grandparent comment was referring to)

getsat··on United Airlines Stops Researcher Who Tweeted about Airplane Network Security
Why do you think your selfish and egotistical (and apparently unlawful) actions should have no consequences?

>Mr. Pollock conceded that he told the flight attendant he planned to ignore the sign, which other travelers had questioned in online travel forums.

Do you also drive around on public roads without a licence stating the "Right to Travel" like people also talk about online?
