gesman··on Ask HN: Simple solutions to backup personal data
Here's what i do:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/ce1cbg/beginne...

1. RelioSync for mirroring all data from multiple places into single place

2. DrivePool is a centralized local storage for everything

3. Arq Backup send everything on schedule to Wasabi cloud.

Above strategy supports (but not limited to) Windows, versioning, undelete protection, local storage resiliency (multiple local drives could contain multiple copies of important stuff), client-side encryption, cost-efficient offsite backup.

gesman··on Ask HN: Are we in an AI / ML bubble?
I doing high-end amateur photography and there are plenty of tools that are able to enhance (sharpen, noise reduction, color correction) imagery using AI that was not possible before.

I took AI/DL course before and professor demonstrated from scratch how to build an algo and train model capable of amazing upsampling of imagery.

Hence - bubble or not - there are lots of useful, practical benefits to this today.

gesman··on California is about to allow former felons to serve on juries
Add to that idiotic idea to ban water bottles in SFO to "protect the environment". Now every thirsty passenger in SFO has to either buy a gigantic 1.5L water bottle or of a questionable health-quality aluminum one.

Sorry for diversion of a subject, can't resist.

gesman··on FDA Approving Drugs at Breakneck Speed, Raising Alarm
Enough gazillion dollars can compress time and expand space.
gesman··on Ask HN: What mistakes did you make when starting as a consultant/freelancer?
Here're mistakes I didn't make:

- Insisted on payment once contract is done and ignore "could you also do that and then i'll pay you for everything together.

- Did not race to the bottom with developers from poor countries.

- Did not take startup stock/shares/options to sacrifise salary.

- Realized that 5% of customers are responsible for 95% of revenues and prioritize attention to their requirements accordingly.

gesman··on If the universe is 13.8B years old, how can we see 46B light years away? (2018)
All this assumes that time is a single thing (sort of gigantic X-axis with "t") that works for everyone in universe equally.

What if we have multiple (billions) of realities with their own t-axis and with us being only one of these with our own timeline?

gesman··on Ask HN: How would you solve the spam problem at Gmail?
Perfect task for AI. Especially considering that Google has more resources for it than bad actor.

gesman··on Google has handed information related to my account to the DoJ
"SEALED v. SEALED"!

I think you may politely respond with politically correct statement:

I don't give a [REDACTED] and "SEALED" may go and [REDACTED] themselves in the [REDACTED].

gesman··on Ask HN: Draconian rules/policies at your current or previous company?
Depending on jurisdiction this company exposes itself to legal liability.

Sounds more like a sweatshop

gesman··on Ask HN: How does my android device know my weather without location perms?
Spying is a big business and paying for forgiveness is a small price to pay over asking for permission.
gesman··on My .in domain has been transferred to another registrant without notification
That's a problem with all country-specific TLD's. At any moment country 'X' can decide to take over '.xx' and nothing anyone can do.
gesman··on Google AdWords charged me for clicks in Istanbul while location-targeting the US
Brand awareness ads. Pretty much it’s irrelevant what you say about brand ‘X’ as long as you bombard gullible observer with ‘X’. Then buying ‘X’ would be more familiar choice for millions than buying ‘Y’ or ‘Z’.
gesman··on Renaissance Technologies
Access to superior information under the disguise of math and science.
gesman··on Ask HN: What is the best way to pass links between phone/desktop?
Google Keep
gesman··on Hospitals are a weak spot in U.S. cybersecurity
I involved in building 2 systems for healthcare:

Patient privacy monitoring (ensure no one peeks into patient records inappropriately) and medication analytics platform (monitors suspicious and anomalous activity related to drugs and opioids diversion).

This of course deals with multitude of different systems, EMR's, data formats, legacy-everything etc, but the GREAT about this whole thing - is opportunity.

No one really tackled a challenge of visibility across different systems and data formats in Healthcare and it's lots of fun to be part of that.

("Fun" is non-corporate word - but it still fun!)

gesman··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard
I think Algo is just a setup script, not a VPN itself?
gesman··on Ask HN: Why vBulletin / phpBB communities are slow on mobile?
Slow as technology or slow as being adopted to use mobile devices to engagement?
gesman··on NSO hacked WhatsApp to spy on top government officials at U.S. allies
So i wonder about a ways of implementing secure communications using untrusted device over untrusted channels.
gesman··on I Accidentally Uncovered a Nationwide Scam on Airbnb
"What you pay is what you get" rule applies.

Hotel chains are also experts in misrepresentations and omissions often fueled by fake positive reviews. During my recent stay in Manhattan at $350+/night hotel - the whole building was wrapped in construction fabrics and workers were walking right in front of my window all week.

This of course haven't been mentioned during reservation.

But at least you deal with host management in person, and not with some shady pimp hiding in a background.

And then of course - you can file chargeback with credit card if everything else fails.

gesman··on I Accidentally Uncovered a Nationwide Scam on Airbnb
>> The main downside for me concerning AirBnb is it takes a long time to analyze the listings to find quality accommodations.

In my view this is major. To describe it better - need to read "between the lines" of misleading representations of properties.

Lots of property owners goes to great extends to make property look way better, bigger, nicer than it really is and to conceal obvious negative points that become apparent even before you are given the keys. Then the list goes on.

AirBnb expects and encourages misrepresentation of properties and misleading descriptions to stimulate cash flow. Try to get refund from AirBnb for misprepresentation or deliberate omissions of negative points.

gesman··on Ask HN: What software/app do you wish would exist?
Simple to use command line utility to search for files and directories with matching names and/or content defined by strings or regex patterns.

All linux utils that do that require anal effort, comes with obscene syntax and demand obscure combination of multiple things to accomplish single task.

I always wanted to write my own one on python but never found time.

gesman··on Ask HN: What software/app do you wish would exist?
Most of these would be posted by competitors :)
gesman··on Ask HN: Google Adsense Alternative?
I once developed data backup software and paid $500/mo to website owner who had great blog articles on backup tools and technologies to put on my gif banner ad.

This was win-win for all. I made tons of sales from there.

So my suggestion is to work not on website that is good for ads, but on website that is good to deliver information and answers on questions. Ads and referral sales will come after that.

gesman··on Ask HN: How to deal with seasonal affective disorder?
Moved to California.

Used to live in Canada (eastern ontario) and this became intolerable.

Living in shitty weather conditions and trying to compensate with artifical means never really worked for me.

gesman··on Ask HN: Dedicated GPU Server Providers?
I can sell you mine: EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti.

It sits unused in my working desktop box.

Let me know if interested

gesman··on Counterfeit books “shipped and sold by Amazon”?

gesman··on Ask HN: What’s Your Backups System?
BackBlaze might decide to delete your files, unless you carefully read and understand their TOS:

gesman··on Ask HN: What’s Your Backups System?
ResilioSync from multiple boxes -to-> single super-redundant DrivePool. From there, via ArqBackup -to-> Wasabi cloud.

Pros:

Client side encryption + versioning + delta backups + undelete (due to versioning) + CPU efficient (never went above 5% CPU utilization) + ransomware protection + cost efficiency (thanks to Wasabi).
