gerhardi··on Facebook was down
I am sorry if this is ever discussed, but could someone tell me why "a man died" is a big news that we should care about?

It's all about the context, who/what/where/etc.

gerhardi··on The Disappearing Universe
Imagine that you go running with a friend. You run at 0.9 * speed of light and your friend runs at 0.8 * speed of light in the exact opposite direction. How fast are you getting away from each other?
gerhardi··on Crowdfunding success from Finland – Yoogaia
Somehow it feels unbelievable that yoga related activities is a $100B market in total?
gerhardi··on Gittip, Year Two
Many of the eastern European countries have probably quite equivalent standards of treatment and facilities for lower price tag than in California. I know quite well some people from Estonia, Poland, Latvia and Czech republic and none have really complained about their childhood, healthcare etc.

Obviously the atmosphere must have been quite different during the communist regime in the 1980s but nowadays things are different on many levels. But if I had children, I wouldn't hesitate to take my family with me to those countries if there was an interesting opportunity on hand.

gerhardi··on Vint – A new message broadcast app
I mean that Vint might have some difficulties to make their users happy, if there are thousands of people waiting for their spot. At least for me the interesting stuff is to spread my message and I have a hunch that it might possibly get really crowded for all the posters with the 20 message daily cap. If the cap is raised significantly or categories (subjects, geographical areas, etc.) are created, then the whole original point of the app is lost in my eyes. I am sorry to have a bad feeling that Vint is driving to a dead end.
gerhardi··on Vint – A new message broadcast app
So how many days will it take for everyone to tell their message, if there are 20 message slots per day?
gerhardi··on Killing cancer like the common cold
If/when the cure makes it through the final tests to the market, the sad thing is that they are probably going to rip off everyone who needs it, no matter what are the real costs.

But anyway, a life is worth everything(?)

gerhardi··on Show HN: CaaS - Coffee as a Service
Exactly... it is like a service providing just "Clothes." - I don't want just "Clothes" even though I do need clothes.
gerhardi··on Show HN: CaaS - Coffee as a Service
No information on coffee varieties, degree of roast, country of origin of beans. Arabica? Robusta? Blended? How dark roast or can I choose? For now I'll prefer to ground my beans at the supermarket, as I know what I'll get.

Edit: I think that this would be important information for anyone who cares a little bit more about their coffee.

gerhardi··on Bitcoin Reaches 1000 USD
Could someone explain how is the blockchain going to maintain integrity and the transfer lag is taken into account "when" bitcoin is globally used everywhere and thousands if not millions of transactions are happening every single second?
gerhardi··on Turn mailto links into clean contact forms
Before I saw this, I couldn't imagine email messages through a form to be more expensive than SMS messages.
gerhardi··on Pushed to the limit as a banking intern
This kind of work in investment banking sector seems quite sad - you are no longer doing work for living, but the other way around.

I have absolutely no experience on what particular type of tasks are done in these positions. Could someone provide more insight? Maybe there could be opportunity to automate this work, at least partially?

gerhardi··on Statement by Edward Snowden to human rights groups at Sheremetyevo airport
woowwwwowoww... now the wording is very critical, the real deal is other way around - they have used torture techniques that (too) many people would consider interrogation.
gerhardi··on Movie Subtitle Fansite Raided By Copyright Industry And Police
It seems to say that "it is not an infringement of copyright for an _authorized entity_ to reproduce..."
gerhardi··on Movie Subtitle Fansite Raided By Copyright Industry And Police
The subtitles are transcription of art made by other people. As a contrast, you shouldn't borrow books from a library and read them aloud and record it and start distributing your "self made" audio books on your website.
gerhardi··on Movie Subtitle Fansite Raided By Copyright Industry And Police
I partially understand the motive here; I guess that only under one percent of these "fansubs" are used with legitimately downloaded video material (never heard of this happening) and the availability and ease of use of the subtitles makes it more tempting to get videos from "pirate" sources. But is it actually a crime to transcribe a movie's dialogue with time codes and share it and is the situation similar to lyrics web sites?
gerhardi··on Optical strontium clocks could redefine the second
If the new second is found to be longer than the old second, then for example long distance travels won't take as many seconds than before. Oh wait... sorry.
gerhardi··on Photographer.io is now open source
This seems just like something I was looking for, just registered few moments ago!
gerhardi··on Teen Jailed For Facebook Comment Reportedly Beat Up Behind Bars
Sure, thats why it only smells like it. In this case only the boy is imprisoned and beaten in jail and his parents are extorted for half a million dollars to get their son back to safety.
gerhardi··on Teen Jailed For Facebook Comment Reportedly Beat Up Behind Bars
Wow.. This so smells like North Korea. A bad joke here and there or getting too tempered after bad game and the police throw you into jail. Of course I hope that he really was just joking - I've even heard of video game rage that has done some real harm and never I have heard that anyone was jailed.
gerhardi··on Putin Says Snowden Must Stop Hurting U.S. to Stay in Russia
Do you think that it is Snowden who is hurting USA or the actions USA (NSA/CIA/etc) has taken and tried to hide?
gerhardi··on German Federal Prosecutor's office gets involved in the NSA data scandal
Now my (naive?) hopes are a tiny bit higher that the American espionage suspects will get extradited from USA to Germany to face charges and possible punishments.

Edit: has such action EVER taken place?

gerhardi··on U.S. bugged EU offices, computer networks
If the documents reveal who are behind this, would USA be willing to extradite the suspects to Europe for trial and punishment?
gerhardi··on Snowden given safepass to Ecuador [pdf]
I think there is a possibility of a trick here - the document is not given to Snowden, but he somehow already actually is in Ecuador and Ecuador's officials have this document and he has been granted passage. This way Aeroflot's statement that Snowden has not been booked for any flights during next 4 days is correct, as he has already left.
gerhardi··on Poll: How often do you deploy to production?
Enterprise stuff in the domain of insurances:

new version around once a month to production, datafixes whenever they are urgent. BI/DW & reporting side with quite a bit faster cycle, around once a week, as the requirements of the extremely complex metrics and dimensional data hierarchies are still evolving.

gerhardi··on In 2009, Ed Snowden said leakers “should be shot.” Then he became one
Ed was of course planning already towards becoming a leaker - he wanted to stay under the radar or gain some NSA points by giving the image of being strictly against leaking.
gerhardi··on Whistleblowers will continue to leak state secrets, warns AP chief
I wonder how agencies can limit the amount of leaks, when their human employees with "secret knowledge" have moral conflict concerning their work and feel that they have nothing to lose. Is it too far away to even think about possibilities like extorting employees with things that could happen to their family members for example? North Korea comes to my mind as an extreme example - "escape and all your relatives are sent to torture camps". What are the preceding steps?
gerhardi··on List of unsolved problems in computer science
How about a list of greatest problems in computer science that have been solved? Would make a nice list to study and to gain general knowledge!
gerhardi··on Bitcoin will soon block small transaction outputs
How can Bitcoin network maintain integrity in a imaginary future where it has gained significant traction and there are millions or even more transactions happening every single second?
gerhardi··on Bitcoin hits $200
I'm along your lines. If I happened to have a stash of bitcoins in my pocket, I'd be very careful about actually buying anything with them today, as the next week they would be more and more valuable. So I think the deflation is the main reason why I don't feel comfortable with idea of using bitcoins as a currency for buying anything - selling might be a different story.

edit: How large volumes of selling bitcoins for USD/EUR/etc. is enough to have significant effect on the value of bitcoin? For example if I had VERY URGENT need to sell 100 000 bitcoins by tomorrow in exchange for USD.
