geraldcombs··on Corundum: Open-source, high performance, FPGA-based NIC
PTP can be useful for packet capture, since that lets you associate a high-precision timestap to each packet that you receive. Dedicated capture cards typically have some combination of PTP, IRIG, and PPS inputs.
geraldcombs··on LibreOffice latest to fall victim to the curse of Catalina
We addressed this by adding a "Folders" tab to our About box which lists configuration, plugin, and other paths relevant to the application. Users can open a folder by double-clicking on it.

It's called Packet Analyzer nowadays, and that's exactly what it was designed for.
geraldcombs··on The Devil's Hair Dryer: Hell is other people, with leaf blowers (2016)
> creating a cloud for 30 minutes

I bike to work. During the local dry season (roughly April to November) I need to keep an ear out for leaf blowers on the way to work and adjust my route accordingly. Otherwise riding through one of their dust clouds is like dredging a chicken breast through flour.

> + Generating manpages for new tools

Do any of your tools use long options (prefixed with a double dash)? If so, make sure you disable the "smart" extension, otherwise you might end up with en dashes.

geraldcombs··on Markdeep markup language
Asciidoctor is in the supported markup list in the GitHub Markup README[1], which means you might need to enable compat-mode for strict AsciiDoc syntax support. The Asciidoctor repository's README.adoc renders just fine[2].

geraldcombs··on Original Windows File Manager with enhancements
Along with the other suggested methods you can type type `open ~/source` or `open ~/pem` from the command line. I use it all the time to open /tmp in Finder.
geraldcombs··on Tell HN: New Google finance sucks
That looks really useful, but there's no way in hell I'm providing information about my portfolio to a site with "Sign in with Facebook" on its front page.
geraldcombs··on Writing space invaders with Go
DEC Sixel has been around since the '80s, although I'm not sure how many modern terminal applications support it.

There are if you interpret "bioavailability" as "THE SPICE MUST FLOW."
geraldcombs··on Ask HN: Is big-endian dead?
It might exist, but if my experience is any indication it's moving steadily toward irrelevance and Oracle is pushing it there.
geraldcombs··on What Really Happened with Vista: An Insider's Retrospective
The sentence after that ("Open source doesn’t have that problem.") is absolutely wrong in my experience. Team communication and dynamics aren't somehow magically different with open source, and pretty much every piece of open source software you use reflects the organization that produced it.
geraldcombs··on HAProxy 1.8.0
For going on 20 years, yes. I even add hashes for each package (i.e. the tarball & platform installers) to the end of the message and sign it. I find it odd and inconvenient when projects don't announce releases via email.
geraldcombs··on Huge Commercial Cave in the Ozarks for Sale
There's some precedent for this. Kansas City, MO has a large network of man-made caves[1]. I remember back in the '90s at least one ISP (Tyrell?) had a data center there. A quick search shows that some companies still host there[2].

geraldcombs··on Show HN: Gutenberg – A static site engine as a single executable
The Website Meta Language has been around since 1996: http://thewml.org/. I used it to generate content years ago before more modern tools came out.
geraldcombs··on Curl’s backdoor threat
A better example might have been Cygwin. As far as I can tell, none of their executables (particularly the installers) are signed.
geraldcombs··on Ask HN: How did open source work before GitHub?
Self-hosting. SourceForge was certainly popular at one time, but it didn't own the market, certainly not to the extent that GitHub currently does. Many projects were simply run on whatever hardware and connectivity the project could scrounge up. For a project I founded I initially bought a used SPARCstation on EBay and installed CVS, Apache, Mailman, Bugzilla, etc. I traded consulting time with various local ISPs in exchange for bandwidth.

You should be able to get a /56 or /60 from them using DHCPV6-PD.
geraldcombs··on Automatic desktop integrated webapps via Electron
> Electron is problematic and you can always tell an Electron app when you see it because the performance is so terrible.

I can tell an Electron app when I see it because it clobbers other windows on my Windows 7 VM: https://github.com/electron/electron/issues/1821 . I really wish they'd fix this since it makes VS Code much less usable.

geraldcombs··on An Important Message About Yahoo User Security
I wonder what percentage of those 500 million accounts correspond to real human beings. Much of the spam on the sites I run come from what appear to be fake @yahoo.com accounts.
geraldcombs··on Homebrew router faces better tests, tougher competition
The ERL supports offloading for various protocols and features. I'm pretty sure IPv6 offload is disabled by default, at least for older firmware versions. Not sure about IPv4 or other protocols. Having offload disabled would have a huge effect on performance.
geraldcombs··on Ask HN: What's the best library for making cross-platform UIs?
GTK+'s Windows support is mixed. It mostly works, but bugs reports don't seem to get much attention and you're on your own if you want Windows binaries. macOS support is effectively an afterthought. The only teir 1, actively supported platform appears to be Linux which makes me wonder why the project advertises itself as "cross-platform."
geraldcombs··on How we found a bug in Amazon ELB

geraldcombs··on ‘Technological fraud’ discovered at Zolder cyclocross worlds
It's not the weight of the bike. It's the risk of a "stupid light"[1] component failing when you're at the front of the peloton and taking out you and most of the riders behind you.

[1] A component which has had its strength and durability compromised in the interest of saving weight.

geraldcombs··on Grsecurity Developer Spender's Feelings on the State of Linux Security
MinGW-w64 also lacks ASLR and DEP. As a result most FOSS Windows packages lack them as well:
