I agree because unfortunately scientists do not know very much yet.

I like the talks by Lisa Feldman Barrett although it might seem to contradict what I wrote.

gepi79··on What the grieving mother orca tells us about how animals experience death
I mentioned eating after surgery because your link gave not more information.

Thanks for the link to https://sci-hub.mu/

I fail to see the strawman arguments that you mention again. The discussion is about the probability of animals having emotions and feelings.

Based on the structure of the brain and the receptors and the involved chemicals, it is very likely that all reptiles and all mammals feel pain. Even fish might have some sense of pain. Humans follow often the "intelligence" related to feelings (bad diet, lack of sports, depression, fear, laziness, procrastination, addiction,...). IMO it is very likely that animals that can learn are driven by (intelligence related to) emotions and feelings and not by some unemotional intelligence and will or a simple "mechanical" reflex.

Another quote from another article: http://veterinarycalendar.dvm360.com/pain-management-reptile...

It is very difficult to assess pain in reptiles and there are no standard methods or assessments available to assess the level of pain in birds. Therefore, you are left with past experience, observation and anthropomorphism (if I had a fractured bone I would want an opiate). Reptiles seem very stoic and do not cry out in pain. I vividly remember many years ago amputating a rear leg in a chameleon and upon recovery he was making a squeaking-type noise and had tachypnea. Despite having been taught that "opioids don't work in reptiles" I gave him morphine. Fifteen minutes later when he stopped making the noise and breathed a more normal rate, I became a convert and gave reptiles analgesics and became dedicated to study the effects of analgesics in reptiles.

gepi79··on What the grieving mother orca tells us about how animals experience death
Obviously we read something different in our messages.

Anyway:

- Orcas are mammals and not fish.

- Your study talks about fish. So does the first article I mentioned. "My" article mentions nociceptors and opioids (pain killers) and an experiment with painkiller lidocaine that suggests that fish feel some kind of pain. Note that both fish and mammals have nociceptors and opioids as chemicals in the brain. That fishes eat after surgery does not mean that fishes do not feel pain. Some people eat as response to stress and fear.

Quote from "my" article (I guess finfish means true fish in this context): In 2013, the American Veterinary Medical Association published new guidelines for the euthanasia of animals, which included the following statements: “Suggestions that finfish responses to pain merely represent simple reflexes have been refuted. … the preponderance of accumulated evidence supports the position that finfish should be accorded the same considerations as terrestrial vertebrates in regard to relief from pain.” Read more: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/fish-feel-pain... gepi79··on What the grieving mother orca tells us about how animals experience death
To assume that animals that behave as if they had emotions actually have emotions is not anthrocentric but intelligent thinking. This not like the question whether Earth orbits the sun or the sun orbits Earth in case you do not know the mass of the objects.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/fish-feel-pain...

It is absurd and unscientific to think that animals have no emotional awareness despite the emotional reptilian complex and the limbic system and a different neocortex for unemotional intelligence.

Besides the problem of consciousness is far from being solved.

> our physiology requires us to eat them just as they must eat each other.

This not true as you pointed out yourself.

Not human physiology but a certain environment requires humans to eat meat because there is nothing better available.

In all societies except the most retarded, a vegan diet with supplements (notably vitamin B12) is the cheapest and healthiest diet.

I am European but I agree.

Although the terrible situation in North Africa and the Middle East (notably Iraq, Libya, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Palestine, Iran) was and is still enforced by some NATO member states (notably USA, UK, France).

Maybe the population in Africa is too dispersed which makes it easy for bad traditions to persist and for corrupt politicians to rule like kings or warlords.

gepi79··on It’s easy to become obese in America. These 7 charts explain why
I do not think that the author of the article has a hidden agenda but mentioning that healthy food can cost more is either misleading or useless.

Quote (of a lie): "Instead, there is a range of economic and social factors that make eating enough fruits and vegetables really hard."

Of course it "can" cost more if you insist on buying only the most expensive vegan food available.

Try to become obese on a cheap healthy whole food plant based diet and rice and potatoes and bread without much added sugar (= normal bread in Europe).

The article offers no useful information to the reader and shifts all responsibility to the evil industry and claims that healthy food is too expensive and socially unacceptable and thus out of reach and not a solution.

Can you find one benefit of the article that made you smarter or a better person ?

gepi79··on It’s easy to become obese in America. These 7 charts explain why
> Healthier foods can cost more

This is an outrageous lie; although they added the word "can" which is either quickly overseen or makes the statement useless.

But arrogant ignorant misleading propaganda is typical for the harmful mainstream media where writers are paid for words and stories and not for content and truth.

Unhealthy food and mainstream media are similar in a way.

Vegan products are the cheapest products.

Vegetables and fruits are cheap if one buys seasonal products.

Vegan high carb (e.g. bread, rice,...) and high fat (e.g. oil) products offer always cheap calories. Besides, getting enough calories in the US is not the problem according to the article.

Animal products are by far the most expensive and most harmful products. Note: They are also subsidized.

gepi79··on It’s easy to become obese in America. These 7 charts explain why
> should be eating a strict paleo diet

This seems to be a typical US american thing as well and why it is easy to become obese and unhealthy in the USA.

Tales of evil sugar and tales of good healthy high fat high protein diets with much animal products.

Worldwide scientific experts warn against much sugar and much fat and much animal products (high fat, high protein).

If you want kids then have kids. Individual actions do not matter globally.

We are far away from global overpopulation. Unless people insist on fossil fuel, waste of resources and animal products as food.

More people are needed for more work for a better world.

Have a good life because it is important for work for improvement. Improvement means better technology.

I know about the dangerous situation but I am still optimistic for humans.

I agree with your last sentence (although mining cadmium might be useful, I do not know) and this is also related to your second argument.

What is worth being protected ?

IMO life and diversity (except e.g. harmful mosquitoes) and health and wealth and not fossil fuel related jobs.

Investment in science and progress should be promoted.

Removal of poverty should be promoted.

Not foolish austerity and protection of harmful activities and traditions.

gepi79··on Ten years left to redesign lithium-ion batteries?
IMO liquid or solid fuel at normal pressure and temperature is much cheaper and easier and safer to store than hydrogen.

Besides:

http://carbonengineering.com

http://www.climeworks.com

From https://lustysociety.org/ethics.html#climate:

Annual global fossil fuel subsidies amounting to $5.3 trillion in 2015 (6.5% of global GDP).

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305750X1...

According to the Global Carbon Atlas: 36 183 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2016.

According to estimates in 2018 by Carbon Engineering and Climeworks: The cost of capturing 1 metric ton CO2 from the air costs $ 600 in 2018 and could fall under $ 100 in 5 - 10 years. A plant could make a liter fuel for a dollar.

At a cost of $ 600 per metric ton of CO2, the capture of the emissions of 2016 (36 183 million metric tons) costs $ 21 710 billion or $ 21.7 trillion.

At a cost of $ 100 per metric ton of CO2, the capture of the emissions of 2016 (36 183 million metric tons) costs $ 3 618 billion or $ 3.6 trillion.

The organic fuel should be used with batteries and fuel cells and not with combustion engines.

In order to decrease the CO2 concentration in the environment, the waste products must be contained and recycled later without release into the atmosphere.

gepi79··on Ten years left to redesign lithium-ion batteries?
Thanks for the discussion. I assume that those who down vote do not reply.

But I disagree that recycling is a big point regarding solar panels and batteries.

IMO lack of recycling and toxic waste are very lame and ignorant and misleading excuses (by the main stream media) to refuse the solar power industry, the battery industry and the electric car industry.

The threat and harm of climate change is catastrophic and very real and change is very urgent.

The fight against climate change must not be a debate of wrong priorities (waste vs climate change) and short term profitability of companies.

No foolish austerity and no local (and needless) poisoning by solar panels and batteries is worth the harm of climate change.

I agree.

But going to Mars in the next decades is a useless horrific suicide mission that only serves to make a few people famous.

IMO persons will colonize moons, planets and space ships once their biological body is replaced by a machine body. In a biological sense, the human race will die on Earth.

gepi79··on Ten years left to redesign lithium-ion batteries?
IMO Thorium reactors are too late. In some decades, there will be enough solar power, wind power and fusion power anyway.

But there is enough Uranium and Thorium for many centuries, even millennia.

The most important problem to solve is climate change; besides aging as the most important reason for misery and death today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6HyNk5Duvk

gepi79··on Ten years left to redesign lithium-ion batteries?
I agree.

Where weight and size do not matter, more choices for batteries are possible.

E.g. redox flow batteries.

https://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/fuel-cells/its-big-and-...

Actually I was surprised that someone made the effort to check the links and write a reply instead of a down vote. I still spend some of time in forums in the hope to learn something new and to make it easy for other persons to learn something new.

Do not lose your sleep over political, military or economic decisions like e.g. the trade war. I am not sarcastic here. Is there something particular that makes you so concerned as US citizen ?

Regarding the USA in the past and meddling in the affairs of other states:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X3nmzkyoKM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Tonkin_Resolution

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article41086.htm

IMO the political distinction between Democrats and Republicans is rather small. But Trump and his staff is different. IMO the election of Trump might be a good sign: US citizens want a different government.

Only 26% of eligible voters voted for Trump. https://mises.org/wire/26-percent-eligible-voters-voted-trum...

Unfortunately leftists try to change the Democrats from within instead of concentrating efforts to create a strong leftist 3rd party.

https://www.youtube.com/user/TYTComedy/videos

At least the USA got rid of Scott Pruitt as EPA administrator. A corrupt (IMO insane) climate change denier should have no place in politics and certainly not in the EPA. I was happy that both Democrats and Republicans wanted Pruitt out of office. Local politicians have still power in the USA. The US president might matter more for other states (war victims) than for US citizens. SolarCity, Tesla and SpaceX are famous US companies benefitting from US subsidies. This is a good thing that has already changed the world for the better. Even DARPA does very useful work regarding AI, medicin, neurotechnology, prosthetics and other domains. https://www.youtube.com/user/DARPAtv/videos

I do not know much about the Russian media but RT offers a lot of good information. E.g. information about the UK Skripal case. Maybe even Hillary Clinton would agree in secret: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6sYB5d1Bu4&t=35

I side with no one in the past Kosovo war. The conflict was complicated and some conflict still remains in the region.

Some years ago, when I found out about the extent of propaganda and lies and often ignorance or lack of normal morality of the politicians and the media, I was shocked and angry.

After much time reading various sources and comment sections, one learns what to expect from the usual factions and actors and what is most likely true and what is story.

I agree except for the last point.

The most aggressive states are USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UK and France while being (morally) supported by NATO allies.

They engage in overt and secret warfare because they can in order to meet some objective. They do not engage in war because they were attacked.

gepi79··on Solar and wind are coming. And the power sector isn’t ready
IMO the problem is not optimism but either ignorance or fatalism and insanity:

- Most people know (at least I hope so) that drastic change is urgent. Why Hope Is Dangerous When It Comes to Climate Change http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/future_tense/2017/0...

- Most people are not willing to change and to let the government invest in change. Most people are used to inertia and more of the same. Drastic change and massive public investments in science and useful technology is not what most people are used to. Daily news bombard the people but not what is really important. Harmful military budgets are increased. Trump even proposed that NATO members should spend 4% of their GDP for harmful military. Animal products are still allowed. Politicians and their voters argue against electric cars because they are expensive and enough electricity is not yet delivered by wind and solar. They do not realize that all related industries and practices must change ASAP. Politicians and their voters enforce monetary austerity because public ownership and public investments for a different world is the worst that could possibly happen in their imagined world.

> What you don’t do is resist thoughts or feelings or experiences. That only causes more problems.

IMO MAPS are irresponsible promoters of psychedelics.

If you are on a high-dose trip, you lose much control of your thoughts. I have read that some medical experts administer high doses in the hope to avoid bad trips often encountered with low doses.

What if your unwanted thoughts and tendencies must be resisted to prevent further misery ?

Examples:

- Try to stay calm and refuse to succumb to overwhelming terror and panic as reported on this web page.

- Try to stay calm and refuse suicide as reported on this web page.

- Try to stay calm and refuse thoughts about murder as reported here: http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/29599/1/a...
