georgeek··on Stanford Lecture Notes on Probabilistic Graphical Models
An amazing text on this topic is Martin Wainwright/Michael Jordan's Graphical Models, Exponential Families, and Variational Inference: https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~wainwrig/Papers/WaiJor08_F...
georgeek··on YC Annual Letter 2017
The barrier of entry s that Google and Facebook can throw much more data at a problem (even design future iterations of their products so that they gather the necessary big chunks). They can get away with better trained, more robust and generally simpler models with less concerns about overfitting (or using and abusing your model too much to match your data).
georgeek··on CS 281B: Statistical Learning Theory (2014)
The reason why the class from 2014 doesn't have a lot of the material is because a big part of it is based on Prof Jordan's future book on Statistical Learning Theory. Another great study of his: http://www.nowpublishers.com/article/Details/MAL-001
georgeek··on Dear Skype/Microsoft: Problems with Linux client
They might be pushing users away from the Linux/Mac apps towads an online version of skype. Which is actually the easiest way to use their service, when you absolutely have to.
georgeek··on The NSA’s machine learning algorithm may be killing thousands of innocent people
There are two issues here, firstly some dramatic overfitting of the model, and secondly that all-too-familiar garbage in, garbage out fact, which is even more relevant when dealing with data.
georgeek··on Cisco Must Be Held Accountable for Aiding China’s Human Rights Abuses
I donate to them, as do many people who believe that they are doing good work overall.
georgeek··on Volkswagen's U.S. head: individuals engineered emissions cheating
Well, he's kind of a dead card anyways, so why not use him through all the Congressional hearings. Replace him with someone else when the blizzard is over.
georgeek··on Car industry 'buried report revealing US car safety flaws over fears for TTIP'
When you remove the huge chunk of metal in front of the cabin that is the engine, you might expect better performance in a front impact test. The structure of the car doesn't have to circumvent the engine, gearbox and a lot of other complicated and heavy bits that have to sit in a specific place.
georgeek··on Academics are being hoodwinked into writing books nobody can buy
One quality specialized publisher is Now Publishers : http://www.nowpublishers.com/ Quality is managed by having leading academics have a say in the editorial decisions.

Their conditions are somehow better than more established ones. Authors still hold the copyright over the material, and according to the librarians at my institution, their campus and course packs are much cheaper to other publishers.

georgeek··on Safari isn’t the problem, but the lack of browser choice in iOS is
A good reason why such petitions are important is that the (sluggish) EU Commission competition authority needs to see such representative citizen efforts in order to look into the lack of browser choice in iOS.
