georgebarnett··on Investor update on quarterly guidance
Interestingly, a literal rerun of the hard drive motor shortage due to flooding in Thailand a few years back.
georgebarnett··on Investor update on quarterly guidance
The best part of this is watching very smart people discover that their highly optimised spreadsheets aren’t anti-fragile.
georgebarnett··on Pay up or we’ll make Google ban your ads
If only there were some sort of device you could use to determine if the website was a small business. Such as a telephone.

Put another way, actual relationships with customers solve this problem trivially.

georgebarnett··on The Future of Fossil Fuels
Based simply on the current “dig up everything we can while it’s still worth something” push from the industry, it’s clear they’re dead in the water with a lot of soon to be stranded assets.

Much like the tobacco industry, they have sway.. right up until they don’t.

georgebarnett··on Vendors who charge extra for single sign-on
I'm interested by why you think this. In the scheme of costs of having employees, the software costs are very low.

georgebarnett··on Don’t pin the butterfly: not all hobbies need to become hustles
Taking what others say on board without allowing it to destroy your own confidence and blind indifference to what others think are separate things.
georgebarnett··on macOS Kernel Extensions are officially deprecated
Your company will only purchase macs? Is there no windows option? That would be .. unusual.
georgebarnett··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust
Could you please provide a source for this?

Java is very fast and 3X slower is a pretty wild claim.

georgebarnett··on EU lawmakers snub Apple's pleas, vote to push for charging cable standard
As an example, I have had to purchase a very specific usb-c data cable for my 4K monitor so I can connect my MacBook with one cable. The standard cables which can charge are not able to carry data at the correct rate.

At the office, this was solved by giving me two cables - one for charge and one for data which connect to the DisplayPort.

The only thing as painful is the box of unlabelled hdmi cables I have that all works to varying degrees.

georgebarnett··on EU lawmakers snub Apple's pleas, vote to push for charging cable standard
.. so it’s Apples fault that Android phone makers can’t produce a credible USB-C headphone adapter? Wow. That’s some seriously backwards logic.
georgebarnett··on Some celebrities are ditching Twitter for Community
What I find fascinating about this is how easy (and simultaneously difficult) it’s going to be for FB and Twitter to copy this.

This channel will remove my only remaining use of these platforms.

georgebarnett··on Apple delivers a new redesigned Maps for users in the United States
If Apple was legally obligated to contribute back, they would do so.

They have a good history of community contribution (eg. Darwin, WebKit) so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, instead of some random anonymous internet commenter angst.

georgebarnett··on Apple delivers a new redesigned Maps for users in the United States
Why should Apple give away their improvements?

I’m genuinely curious why you think they should do this.

georgebarnett··on Apple delivers a new redesigned Maps for users in the United States
Why do you equate “elevating the discipline” with “give away the data?”.

Are you suggesting Google didnt elevate the discipline of search because their backend is closed?

georgebarnett··on A Surge of New Plastic Is About to Hit the Planet
While I’m sure these companies are trying their hardest to hedge, once their major product (fuel) disappears, they will be nowhere near the size they are today.

Imagine these companies at 10% their current size. That’s a LOT of political clout they lose.

georgebarnett··on Adventures at the Vipassana Enlightenment Factory
I’m always curious why folks think acetic practices like sitting in pain and not taking your meds are helpful with meditation.

It’s if you think taking an antihistamine is going to screw up your meditation, you’re probably on the wrong path.

georgebarnett··on Blue light may not be as disruptive to sleep patterns as thought: mouse study
I don't know; I was particularly looking at color shifting devices and the recommendation was to hold off on the purchase for a few years until the science had a change to settle.
georgebarnett··on Blue light may not be as disruptive to sleep patterns as thought: mouse study
A few weeks ago I was advised by a lighting specialist that there’s a lot of ongoing disagreement regarding the best approach for reducing how light affects sleep. I was aware that there has been limited research and many of the solutions to this point have been basically “copy flux”.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting read and has made me change my buying behaviour.

georgebarnett··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
Theres a note on the ticket that domain renames can be requested via support and this process does work - I've tried it on my own site :)

I've had some visibility of the internals of this work and it has involved touching a very large number of systems across a lot of teams. If you're interested in this issue, do also follow CLOUD-6999 which tracks custom domains and has a number of updates which are related.

georgebarnett··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
Touchbar doesn’t make sense until you install something like Pock.Dev. After doing that, it’s useful.
georgebarnett··on California's ‘Surprise’ Billing Law Is Protecting Patients and Angering Doctors
Your points are all very handwavy, but to answer. There are good public schools in my district.

The state is currently building a huge new high school a block from me to cover upcoming demand.

I’ve gotten a bed whenever I’ve needed one in hospital. Perhaps that one is not even everywhere and can tend to be an issue in rural areas, but not where I live specifically.

Public transport here is good. It’s congested, sure, but nowhere near as bad as other cities I’ve lived in. The state is currently building several new transit lines.

In terms of tax, I pay roughly the same overall as my US peers. I do earn a bit less, but that’s because it’s AUD.

I don’t even know what to make of your comment about old people. That sounds completely weird. I certainly don’t know any of my older (70+) friends who do that because there are lots of social programs and activities in my local area.

georgebarnett··on California's ‘Surprise’ Billing Law Is Protecting Patients and Angering Doctors
Australian here.

I’m curious about what you see as wrong with our standard of care?

I can see my GP same day, bulk-billed via Medicare (so no out of pocket cost to me) for whatever I need. Likewise, with a day or two notice I can see a specialist at my local clinic. Also bulk billed.

Out of hours, I can order an in home doctor service over the internet with an average wait time of 4 hrs. Again, bulk billed so no out of pocket cost to me.

I don’t think I’ve ever waited for longer than 24 hrs for a doctors appointment in the 12 years I’ve lived here.

georgebarnett··on Flirtey Wants to Enable Ten Minute Commercial Drone Deliveries
Fortunately I don't live in an area with any gardens as I'm in the city centre. I have lived more rural though and leaf blowers and mowers were very annoying.

My concern with drones is simply the people density. Its one thing to say "you can't hear them 400ft up", however that assumes they never come down and given I live in a high density area, I expect many would be descending regularly.

georgebarnett··on Flirtey Wants to Enable Ten Minute Commercial Drone Deliveries
I do; I live in the city centre with my apartment facing a back alley. Delivery trucks are often in the back lane left idling with radios blaring. Its one of the reasons I'm moving house.
georgebarnett··on Flirtey Wants to Enable Ten Minute Commercial Drone Deliveries
I really hope that we see some very strict local regulations around noise control. Drones are awfully noisy and a city full of delivery drones perpetually buzzing would be a massive regression.
georgebarnett··on What wartime ‘munitionettes’ teach us about burnout
One of the greatest tragedies is how we lie to ourselves about productivity. I mean that in the sense of “I understand what the science says, but I feel like I’m getting more done.”

I know I’m more productive when I step away from my work for downtime, and yet at the same time I have times when I feel it’s near impossible to do.

This is an incredibly hard habit to break.

georgebarnett··on Andy Hunt on AWS: The Cloud is just a computer in Reston with a bad power supply
As per the docs on the front page of the EBS product site, they experience an annual failure rate of 0.1-0.2%.

Amazon are very upfront about this and provide multiple means of ensuring data is resilient.

If you’re not using those, it’s on you. The cloud is not magic.

georgebarnett··on Ask HN: How to be less argumentative online?
I used to believe that equal treatment of opinions online was a massive win, but I’ve come to realise that lack of reputation is one of the greatest challenges we face.

That a Nobel laureate scientist and a redneck can share equal space on a subject is a real problem.

I’m not suggesting anybody be censored, merely that all opinions on a topic are not equal and shouldn’t be treated as such.

georgebarnett··on Ask HN: How to be less argumentative online?
We are no happier as a result of that success. Instead, we are on the verge of destroying our biosphere and civilisation.

Material progress is useful, but hollow.
