geogra4··on Employee shortages: Where have all the workers gone?
Is it controversial to state that many died?
geogra4··on $100M xPrize for Carbon Removal
I'm laughing but honest to god I think this could work...somehow.
geogra4··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
I hate this line that's repeated all the time because its simply wrong. Osteopathy has its own residencies and the DO is legally equivalent to an MD
geogra4··on Your CPU may have slowed down on Wednesday
you're right. I guess X64 and X86-64 are synonyms, more or less?
geogra4··on Your CPU may have slowed down on Wednesday
Yeah, that was kind of tongue-in-cheek. Apple knows when to leave a cpu architecture. They've done it 3 times already (M68k->PPC->x86->ARM)

Though I think we're getting now to the point that we would have gotten to then. AMD bought x86 another 15 years of life.

geogra4··on Your CPU may have slowed down on Wednesday
I applaud talos for making fast, modern workstations[0] with an OpenPower CPU. This is probably the best you'll get today for a fast, secure, open workstation. RISC-V is not there yet.

I think x64 WAS Itanium. x86-64 is the beast we are dealing with today. In that world maybe everyone goes to PowerPc? The move from 32bit G4 to 64bit G5 cpu wasn't a big deal since the PPC had 64bit variations back in 1997 with the 620 (though apple never used it)
geogra4··on The end of the pandemic is near
The uk is an Island too and it didn't seem to help them
geogra4··on Samsung to jump into laptop processor market with Exynos chip in H2
Dex isn't bad. I use it from time to time. It's really not much different from a chromebook. I'd use a dex laptop if it was available.
geogra4··on India’s second wave of Covid-19 feels nothing like its first
I have had multiple Indian co-workers (from our Chennai office) test covid positive and get sick. Young healthy people.
geogra4··on iMac 24-inch
Apple should bring back the duo dock!
geogra4··on European Urbanism and High-Speed Rail
Why not just take a taxi or Uber? Or heck, take the hsr from Jacksonville to Miami and rent a car when you get there. No one says airports don't make sense because you cant fly to the office building you need to get to.
geogra4··on European Urbanism and High-Speed Rail
Interesting, though I would argue that Florida may be a better comparison than the Midwest.

Florida has a higher population density than France and could be served quite well by a hsr line from Jacksonville to Miami with a spur to Orlando/tampa

geogra4··on European Urbanism and High-Speed Rail
Somewhat true. Passenger rail is not seen as part of "infrastructure" on the right.
geogra4··on New Mexico is the second state to ban qualified immunity
In practice police are almost entirely legally invulnerable. QI is part of that, and needs to go.
geogra4··on Facebook does not plan to notify half-billion users affected by data leak
Who's going to tell them otherwise?
geogra4··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
I feel like if you did enterprise Java development for a large company you could get lost in the machine pretty easily. Just keep your head down and meet your deliverables and you should be safe.
geogra4··on No Federal Taxes for Dozens of Big, Profitable Companies
Land value tax like georgism?
geogra4··on Paul Erdős (2000)
Still surprised there's no tool online to calculate the erdos number for any academic author
geogra4··on How to create a 1M record table with a single query
Not oracle?
geogra4··on Oracle Cloud is unreachable
We were not, oddly enough. I can't speak in too much detail since I'm not on that team but our region was included so we may just have been lucky
geogra4··on Oracle Cloud is unreachable
We do. Our stack is a fairly standard Java app on an oracle dB. Seems to work well enough. We couldn't get the app to work with azure and aws is a no go (we have retail clients)
geogra4··on Google-free /e/ OS is now selling preloaded phones in the US, starting at $380
I think /e/ needs the Exynos version, which is much harder to come by in the US.

Either way, when I'm ready for my next phone i'm going to strongly consider /e/

geogra4··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
Not really startup friendly. Their market is almost exclusively the enterprise.

"Oh you have office365 and adfs? just move your monolithic enterprise java app to azure and save!"

geogra4··on Why isn't HN infinite scroll?
Count me also in favor of the paginated model compared to infinite scroll
geogra4··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
Proof of work needs to go to the gutter. It was a bad idea to begin with. Proof of stake makes more sense and operates like a bank deposit interest rate
geogra4··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
The newer proof of stake coins solve this in a much more sane way. Proof of work is going to kill the planet
geogra4··on Can We Break the 2nm Barrier in Silicon Fabrication?
Ahh, fondly remember the days when I had to get a separate fpu for my Motorola 68lc040
geogra4··on Show HN: ustaxes.org – open-source tax filing webapp
I'm happy paying the modest fee for taxact. I do agree America has such an annoying tax system though. Why am I filling out forms if the irs already has this information!
geogra4··on Microsoft Wallops Amazon in 2020 Cloud Revenue
Couldn't they do libreoffice as a service? Doesn't that already exist?
